For those worried that with the upcoming ends of “Gotham” and “Arrow” would mean a dire lack of comic book-based television shows on the air, we’re lucky enough to have the Epix series “Pennyworth” on the horizon, now set to premiere July 28.
Executive produced by “Gotham’s” Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, and based on DC characters created by Bob Kane with Bill Finger, “Pennyworth” focuses on the exploits of young Alfred Pennyworth, decades before he would become the trusted confidante of Gotham’s own Caped Crusader. The official description, per Epix:
The 10-episode, hour-long drama series from Warner Horizon Scripted Television follows Bruce Wayne’s legendary butler, Alfred Pennyworth (Jack Bannon), a former British Sas soldier in his 20s, who forms a security company and goes to work with a young billionaire Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge), who’s not yet Bruce’s father, in 1960s London.

Exclusive: Christie Watson’s The Language of Kindness, a story of acts of compassion in the nursing profession, is to be turned into a television series after Mammoth Screen, the British production company behind dramas including Poldark and Victoria, optioned the rights. I understand the ITV-owned firm has set Rachel Bennette, who adapted Zadie Smith’s Nw for BBC Two, to write.
The book, which comes out May 3 in the UK via publisher Chatto & Windus, is an account of the medical profession defined by acts of care, compassion and kindness from birth to death. Watson, who was a nurse for twenty years, tells stories including the nursing of a premature baby who has miraculously made it through the night, a patient’s agonizing heart-lung transplant, and the hair-washing of a child fatally injured in a fire, attempting to remove the toxic smell of smoke before the grieving family arrive.

Imagine being trapped in a tiny ship heading for America in 1617, not only are you unsure of whether you’ll make it, you also have no idea who your future husband will be if you reach your destination. The only thing you can be sure of is that even if the man who has paid for your passage turns out to be a rapist or drunkard, there’s no going back.
Writer Bill Gallagher, who also wrote Lark Rise to Candleford and Paradise, is experienced at drawing from real life events in history and when researching Jamestown, the first British settlement in America, decided he wanted to write a drama where women, despite being perceived as underdogs, use their intelligence to manipulate themselves into a position of power.

In what appears to be a further step in expanding its creation of original content, Netflix is to partner with UK’s ITV to co-produce a new eight-part thriller titled Paranoid. The show will be broadcast on UK television before arriving on the streaming platform later in 2016. The television event is being written by Bill Gallagher (Lark Rise To Candleford), and features a seemingly small but tragic incident that leads to international drama.
Paranoid will begin with a young woman doctor being brutally stabbed to death by a masked man while she plays with her three year old son in a busy community play park. The attack occurs in full view of multiple witnesses, and a group of detectives are tasked with investigating the incident, in order to figure out what happened and why. The information from one witness points to a much greater threat than anyone was expecting, however,...

Updated: Read the critics' verdicts on Benedict Cumberbatch's radical reinvention of Hamlet, post-press night
As Shakespeare himself might have exclaimed: "Huzzah!" Thanks to the presence of a certain film and TV megastar, the Barbican's latest production of Hamlet has eclipsed everything else in Theatreland ever since it was first announced back in March 2014.
And don't worry: despite a mixed response from the critics on - and before - press night, Digital Spy can confirm it's both extraordinary and unmissable. But more importantly, with Benedict Cumberbatch in it, along with elements linked to Game of Thrones and even The X Factor, it might just be the most DS-ish cultural event this year, seemingly laser-targeted to excite you. And here's why:
1. Benedict Cumberbatch is ace in it

The history of the British police movie is not a glorious one. Perhaps it's because (for the most part) U.K. coppers aren't allowed to carry firearms, which somewhat reduces the capacity for squib-happy action sequences. Or maybe it's the lack of glamorous locations for said shootouts, which can hardly compete with Manhattan or L.A. But after Edgar Wright imported the cop movie to rural Britain with "Hot Fuzz," we've seen a string of more straight-faced takes on the genre from the U.K., including the Jason Statham vehicle "Blitz," '70s remake "The Sweeney," and this spring's "Welcome To The Punch." Of course, you could take a different approach, a more realistic and unglamorous one, where not a single bullet flies and no car chases another. And that's pretty much what "Blood" does. Executive-produced by Sam Mendes, adapted from a mid-'00s BBC series called "Conviction" by original...

Season one of Call The Midwife was a surprise hit on both sides of the Atlantic. Heidi Thomas (Upstairs Downstairs) did an amazing job of adapting Jennifer Worth’s characters for the small screen. Millions of fans laughed, wept and cheered as Jenny, Chummy and friends delivered babies and helped some of London’s poorest folks to rise above their lot in life.
Season two, was arguably even better than the first season of the show because we didn’t have to waste time with introductions. We just jumped straight into the action as Sister Evangelina and Trixie risked life and limb to deliver a baby aboard a cargo ship. The first episode of season two set a tone and a tempo that was to remain in place for the rest of the 2013′s new episodes. Without giving too much away, we saw one nurse give birth,...

The trailer has landed for Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright's comedy about a group of mates attempting to finish a legendary pub crawl after 20 years – only to walk into an alien invasion
It's been a time of ups and downs for the writing team behind The World's End, director Edgar Wright and star Simon Pegg, since the duo's last film, Hot Fuzz, brought the buddy cop genre to a small town in rural Gloucestershire back in 2007. Wright won critical acclaim for the wonderfully dry, visually splendid Canadian comic book caper Scott Pilgrim vs the World but saw his rather expensive film become one of 2010's most high-profile box-office turkeys. Pegg has become Hollywood's go-to guy for comedic Brit sidekick roles in blockbuster sagas such as Star Trek and Mission: Impossible, yet struggled a little when placed centre-stage in middling fare such as last year's A Fantastic Fear of Everything and 2011's off-kilter Paul.

More casting news has come in for The CW's pilot "The Selection," and it sounds like they are diverging from the source material a bit by adding an entirely new character. Read on for the details.
Deadline broke the news that British actor Ben Aldridge ("Lark Rise to Candleford," "The Bible") will play Prince Rafe, the younger brother of Prince Maxon (Michael Malarkey), who loves his country and takes his leadership role seriously — but has a secret. What's interesting is that, as MTV pointed out, in Kiera Cass' dystopian novel, upon which the potential series is based, Prince Maxon is an only child.
"The Selection" is set 300 years in the future and is about 35 working-class young women who are chosen via a lottery to participate in a competition for the Royal Prince Maxon's hand in marriage, which would make the winner the new queen, all while a growing rebellion threatens to crush the crown.

The BBC’s Ripper Street marks a growing trend in TV period crime drama, which has turned from nice to nasty…
Contains mild spoilers for episodes one and two of Ripper Street
Time was when period detective drama meant spending fifty minutes or so in the company of a shrewd Oap solving aristocratic murders in picturesque country houses by drinking Earl Grey from china cups and gently probing the scullery maid. It was sanitised, sexless, and more doilies than Deadwood.
Of late however, period crime TV has evolved into something nastier. Twinsets, dastardly heirs and moustachioed Belgians are out, muckiness, dismemberment and gratuitous nudity are in. Looking ahead to new commissions from ITV and the BBC, the trend set to give Scandi-noir a run for its cosily attired money is for knobbing-and-knifing period crime drama. Forget Call The Midwife, we're talking Kill The Midwife, and leave...

As if those of us in the fold weren’t already anxious for new Doctor Who, we were recently treated to the information that Neil Gaiman – writer of novels, comic books and the fantastic, Hugo Award-winning Series 6 episode 'The Doctor’s Wife' – would be writing a new episode for Series 7. To add even more angst to the mix, it has now been reported that Gaiman will be working with one of the best villains in the Doctor Who universe, the Cybermen. The Cybermen, who have been plaguing the Doctor since William Hartnell faced off against them in 1966’s 'The Tenth Planet', were last seen late in Series 6 in 'Closing Time'. According to showrunner Steven Moffat:
"Cybermen were always the monsters that scared me the most. Not just because they were an awesome military force, but because sometimes they could be sleek and silver and right behind you without you even knowing.

The 11th Doctor, played by Matt Smith, and his new companion, played by Jenna-Louise Coleman, are to tackle the metallic menaces in a 2013 story, the BBC has confirmed.
The iconic baddies will feature in Episode 13, penned by Gaiman and directed by Stephen Woolfenden.
Also starring in the story are Warwick Davis (Life's Too Short, Harry Potter), Tamzin Outhwaite (EastEnders, Hotel Babylon, Paradox) and Jason Watkins (Being Human, Lark Rise to Candleford) as a band of misfits on a mysterious planet.

A new co-production deal between BBC America Worldwide and Masterpiece will see two more U.K. titles coming to PBS. The Paradise is a rags-to-riches Victorian Era drama series set in Britain’s first department store. The Lady Vanishes is a 90-minute adaptation of the 1938’s Alfred Hitchcock thriller about a woman who gets caught up in a mysterious and menacing case of a missing person. Last week saw the release of Kevin Macdonald’s acclaimed documentary, Marley, alongside Peter Berg’s mammoth blockbuster, Battleship, and this week brings with it a handful of new films and, most importantly in my books, the long-anticipated release of The Walking Dead Season 2. Today is a good day.
It’s a fairly light week with new releases, so without further ado,
My pick of the week:
The Walking Dead – Season 2.
The Walking Dead – Season 2 Iframe Embed for Youtube

For Christopher Eccleston, small is always beautiful, whether it be TV thriller Blackout or Greek tragedy Antigone on the stage. He reveals why making films just doesn't compare
He strides across the polished tiled floor, past imposing columns and heavy, intricately carved doors. Outside, the Manchester winds are furiously buffeting the redbrick walls of this grand, turn-of-the-last-century university hall. There seems nowhere more appropriate to meet Christopher Eccleston: he has a face to fit buildings like this, an on-screen intensity that is the match of the architecture. But even so, his latest TV role looks set to stretch him: an unflinching, uncomfortable, three-hour examination of addiction and corruption, in which Eccleston goes from rock bottom to hero, as Manchester politician Daniel Demoys.
Written by Bill Gallagher, who adapted Lark Rise to Candleford for the small screen, Blackout puts alcoholism under the microscope in the course of its three episodes.

She arrives in the North East seeking employment and finds herself working at a glamorous department store called The Paradise. The store is full of peculiar characters including a sinister man with a shadowy past and the colorful Miss Audrey (Lancashire) who oversees the ladies wear department. It isn’t quite Are You Being Served? but the BBC are promising 8 hour long fun filled episodes of romance and romps.

When War Horse director Steven Spielberg arrived in Devon, its natural beauty forced him to reconsider the county's role in his epic tale of love
In August 2010 details started leaking out online. Someone resembling Steven Spielberg had been spotted in the Co-op in Yelverton on the southwestern edge of Dartmoor. "He didn't look familiar to the area," one local said. "He looked like he was going to buy the Co-op rather than buy a sandwich." It was later suggested – but not confirmed – that Spielberg had bought a pint of semi-skimmed milk.
Later a man answering to the Hollywood director's description –"dressed in a black leather jacket and his signature cap" – was seen striding across the moorland near Sheepstor on Dartmoor. A grainy photograph of Spielberg kneeling and squinting in a Devon meadow surfaced on the web. Locals reported fruit carts and hay wagons popping up behind hedgerows. Crew members were...

They have teamed up with Thomas's long-term writing partner Jonny Sweet for a new show, Chickens, about three young men who avoid joining the army during the First World War.

The comedy is based around how the three can win over the women of the village.
