The streamer dropped an update on its ad-supported numbers this week, even as data shows it lags behind other streamers in the U.S. in ad-supported signups.
Netflix wants to put any speculation about the success of its ad-supported Standard with Ads plan to rest. The world’s biggest streamer in terms of subscribers was already dominating headlines on Wednesday with the news that it had inked a deal to stream a select package of NFL games for each of the next three seasons, but it doubled down on its big week by taking the opportunity to announce that it had grown to 40 million ad-supported streaming customers around the world, a big gain over the last time it provided an update on its ad tier in January.
Key Details: Netflix had 23 million ad-supported customers in January and just 15 million in October. The ad-supported plan first launched in November 2022. Recent data...

“Slow Horses” star Gary Oldman is the frontrunner to win Best Drama Actor at the upcoming Emmys. Oldman earned his first and only Oscar six years ago for his portrayal of World War II-era British prime minister Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour.” That win was sandwiched between two other lead bids for “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” (2012) and “Mank” (2021). His sole Emmy nomination to date came in 2001 for his guest appearance in the two-part seventh season finale of “Friends”; he lost to Derek Jacobi (“Frasier”).
On Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses,” which is based on a series of novels by Mick Herron, Oldman plays Jackson Lamb, a particularly uncouth MI5 officer saddled with the responsibility of supervising a group of service rejects. This constitutes his very first regular role on a continuing series and his first live action TV performance at all in over two decades.

It’s been nearly a year since Netflix stopped offering the Basic plan to new customers, but existing users could still access it.
The takeover of Netflix’s Standard with Ads plan is continuing. One report in April suggested that the streamer had 7 million customers on the tier in the United States and Canada alone, and Netflix has made plenty of moves to try and enhance the plan’s attractiveness in the eyes of customers since its November 2022 launch. The streamer has already sunset its cheapest ad-free plan for new subscribers, but existing customers of the Basic plan have been allowed to keep it until now. A new report from Streaming Better indicates that Netflix has been warning some subscribers that they are about to lose access to their Basic plan, as the streamer tries to get as many viewers to opt for the ad-supported option as possible.

Being one of the most important figures of New Hollywood and the most commercially successful director in history, Steven Spielberg has prominently inscribed his name in history. Movie recommendations of the pioneer of the modern blockbuster or even the whole 21st century’s cinema definitely deserve our close attention.
Speaking of one classic feature, the filmmaker stated it meant everything to him, calling it “one of the great movies ever made”, while many critics claim it’s the best film ever made in cinematic history. Indeed, its impact on the industry is hard to overestimate.
The 1941 drama that we’re talking about focuses on the rises and falls of a big publishing magnate, the character based on the renowned media barons and tycoons of that time and partially of the movie screenwriters' own real-life experiences. And yes, you guessed it right: the movie in question is Citizen Kane.

Rightly or wrongly, streaming stocks have been judged by subscriber numbers. It’s not a complete picture of a company’s business, but it’s a key metric for judging the health of a platform. That’s why Netflix surprised investors by announcing it will no longer provide subscriber numbers starting next year.
In its letter to investors, Netflix said, “In our early days, when we had little revenue or profit, membership growth was a strong indicator of our future potential. But now we’re generating very substantial profit and free cash flow (Fcf). We are also developing new revenue streams like advertising and our extra member feature, so memberships are just one component of our growth. In addition, as we’ve evolved our pricing and plans from a single to multiple tiers with different price points depending on the country, each incremental paid membership has a very different business impact.

The character of Tom Ripley first appeared in Patricia Highsmith's 1955 novel "The Talented Mr. Ripley," a salacious story about a con man who is hired to locate an old school chum named Dickie Greenleaf but who ends up becoming obsessed with him, killing him, and supplanting him. Ripley is not a charming con man, but he is staggeringly clever and possesses a talent for subterfuge. He's also driven by his baser desires, unable to resist pursuing the women and men he lusts after (Ripley is likely bisexual) or stealing the money he so desperately wants. Each time, Ripley gets away with it, as evidenced by the fact that he starred in five novels published through to 1991.
A critic once pointed out that Tom Ripley's character arc is a direct inversion of traditional storytelling. A typical crime novel protagonist will learn new things as the story progresses and then use...

David Fincher’s next film for Netflix is his long, long cherished remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers On A Train. More here.
Following the release of The Killer on Netflix late last year, David Fincher signed a new deal with the streaming platform which is believed to tie him exclusively to the company for another three years.
While the boss of Cannes (and anybody else who yearns to see Fincher’s work back on the big screen) expressed some dismay that the American filmmaker’s next few projects would go straight to the small screen, at least Fincher’s Netflix deal has seen him become more prolific of late.
In the last three years, Fincher has created Mank and The Killer for Netflix, a veritable landslide of films when you consider that prior to this flurry of films, it took Fincher almost a decade to release two films, those...

Naomie Harris, Pierce Brosnan and Tom Burke have joined the high-flying cast of Black Bag, the spy thriller that Steven Soderbergh is directing for Focus Features.
Cate Blanchett, Michael Fassbender, Regé Jean Page and Marisa Abela are already in Bag, whose plot details are being kept under the trench coat. David Koepp wrote the script.
Production begins in May in London, with Casey Silver and Greg Jacobs producing.
Harris earned an Academy Award nomination for her work in Barry Jenkins’ 2016 drama Moonlight and is known for playing Moneypenny in the Daniel Craig James Bond movies. She recently starred with Chiwetel Ejiofor in the Netflix series The Man Who Fell to Earth. The actress is repped by WME, Untitled Entertainment and U.K.’s The Artists Partnership.

It is a testament to his acting ability that it was years before I realized that Gary Oldman is British. With an ability to nail accents, the dedication to drastically change his appearance and the talent to convey the full spectrum of emotions, Oldman is one of the most eclectic and underrated actors of our time.
Born March 21, 1958, in London, Oldman began his acting career on the British stage in 1979, and made his film debut in “Remembrance” in 1982. In 1984, he reluctantly accepted the role of punk rocker Sid Vicious in “Sid and Nancy,” a performance which garnered him critical acclaim and launched a diverse and successful career that has spanned almost four decades, and includes everything from small indie films to blockbuster franchises.

Films made by the likes of Netflix seem to have one chance to get noticed – and then they’re falling away, almost forgotten. A few thoughts.
You might just have noticed, but we’ve just had the Academy Awards come and go, with a traditional studio taking home the top prize. Snapping at their heels, streaming services spending a lot of money to promote their wares, but not winning a lot of gold.
Among this year’s streaming contenders: Maestro, Killers Of The Flower Moon, Nyad, Society Of The Snow and Rustin. Some smashing films there: my fear is, in some cases, that’s going to be pretty much the last we’ve heard of them.
The unsuccessful Oscar campaign is nothing fresh of course. In recent years though, streaming services – Netflix in particular – have allowed hard cash to flow into their attempt to earn Academy Awards. Of those streamers,...

Netflix has won a total of 23 trophies through the years, a number that keeps growing every awards season. “All Quiet on the Western Front” is the streaming giant’s biggest winner to date with four Oscars, followed by “Roma” at three, and then “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Mank” with two apiece. In terms of major categories, Jane Campion (“The Power of the Dog”) and Alfonso Cuarón (“Roma”) both claimed Best Director, while Laura Dern took home Best Supporting Actress for “Marriage Story.” So far the studio has yet to win the Best Picture award, though it’s been nominated there multiple times. Streamers narrowly avoided getting shut out at the 2024 Oscars: Netflix came away with just one trophy and Apple left empty-handed, after they garnered a total of 32 nominations.
Netflix collected its one win for Wes Anderson’s “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” an adaptation of a Roald Dahl story, in the live action short film category. The 40-minute film, with a cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, and Ralph Fiennes, is the first Oscar for Anderson (who wasn’t in attendance to receive the award).

Heading into Sunday’s 96th Academy Awards, Netflix led all studios and platforms with 19 nominations across 11 films, including seven for Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” — which was shut out. Apple had picked up 13 nods, including 10 for Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which also drew a goose egg.
Since 2017, Netflix has now won 23 Oscars in all.

The films competing for the 2024 Best Production Design Oscar are “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Napoleon,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things.” Our odds currently indicate that “Barbie” (17/5) will be the winner, followed in order of likelihood by “Poor Things” (7/2), “Oppenheimer” (4/1), “Killers of the Flower Moon” (9/2), and “Napoleon” (9/2).
After 1970 and 2004, this is only the third year in Oscars history that the same five movies are nominated for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design. The two present lineups differ, however, in that none of the former’s individual contenders are past winners, constituting the first such instance in the category since 2009. In that case, the only returning nominees were art director Nathan Crowley (“The Dark Knight”) and set decorator Gary Fettis (“Changeling”).
Leading this year’s production design hopefuls in terms of total career nominations are “Barbie” duo Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer, who earned joint recognition for half a dozen earlier films.

Last year, Brendan Fraser won Best Actor for “The Whale,” which also won Best Makeup and Hairstyling for artists Adrien Morot, Judy Chin, and Annemarie Bradley. This is a combination of Oscar categories that have popped up several times over the years. But could it happen again this year? Well, theoretically, yes.
The brilliant makeup artist Kazu Hiro, also known as Kazuhiro Tsuji, turned Bradley Cooper into Leonard Bernstein in Netflix’s “Maestro.” Kazu Hiro landed himself an Oscar nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside Kay Georgiou and Lori McCoy-Bell. Meanwhile, Cooper is nominated for Best Actor.
Along with “The Whale,” several other movies have done well with this pair of Oscar categories. The Cinema Audio Society Awards gave a boost to the Oscar hopes of “Oppenheimer” on Saturday. The film took top honors at these precursor prizes that honor sound mixing over one of its Oscar rivals for Best Sound — “Maestro”– as well as “Barbie,” “Ferrari,” “and “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
The upcoming Oscars mark the fourth year for the Best Sound category, which combines Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing. The Cas honors the latter while the Motion Picture Sound Editors salute achievements in the former.
Last year all five of the society’s favorites — “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Batman,” “Elvis” and “Top Gun: Maverick” — sounded good to the academy’s sound branch. “Top Gun: Maverick” won both awards.
In 2022, four of the five Cas nominees — “Dune,” “No Time to Die,” “The Power of the Dog” and “West Side Story” — went on to contend at the Oscars.

The winners of the 77th annual BAFTA Awards were revealed on February 18, just four days before Oscar voters begin weighing in with their choices for the winners of the 96th annual Academy Awards. Conversely in 2022, the two academies aligned in 15 races. The exceptions were Best Picture (the Oscars went with the BAFTA-snubbed “Coda” while the Brits loved...

Like most Oscar categories that have existed since the foundation of the Academy Awards, Best Cinematography has undergone several changes over the past near-century. The most significant one occurred in 1968, when films permanently stopped being separated into two categories based on whether they were shot in black-and-white or color. In the 56 years since that unification, 94% of Best Cinematography nominations have gone to color films, while just 18 black-and-white contenders have emerged. Scroll through our photo gallery to find out which movies belong to that special subset.
The films that qualify for this list are either entirely or primarily shot in black-and-white, with one example of the latter type being 1994 winner “Schindler’s List.” This excludes nominees that contain some black-and-white scenes but are mainly shot in color, such as 2024 contenders “Maestro,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things.”

Poor Things, Oppenheimer and Saltburn won Art Directors Guild (IATSE Local 800) Awards in the categories for fantasy, period and contemporary live action features, respectively, at the 28th Adg Awards, which were handed out Saturday at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Ovation Hollywood.
Poor Things and Oppenheimer are additionally nominated for the Oscar in production design, alongside Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon, which were also Adg nominated in their respective categories.
Over the past five years, the winner of the Adg’s period film prize has gone on to win the Oscar for production design twice: In 2020, for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and in 2021, for Mank. During that time, the production design Oscar went to the winner of the fantasy category twice, in 2019, for Black Panther, and 2022, for Dune. After a surprising turn with Mank, David Fincher has gone back to the early days of Seven and Panic Room with his gritty action-thriller, The Killer. The Oscar nominee returns with Michael Fassbender as the lead; the Netflix exclusive is about a hitman who kills off his employers one-by-one, following a failed assassination attempt on a high-level target. Other notable names in the film include Tilda Swinton and Charles Parnell. The Killer has a relatively high rotten tomatoes score from the critics. Surprisingly, audiences aren’t as enthused as it currently stands at 59%. The last time a Fincher film received...

Amanda Seyfried – whose credits include The Dropout, Mank, You Should Have Left, Mamma Mia!, Big Love, Jennifer’s Body, Veronica Mars, the original Mean Girls, and much more – has signed on to star in the suspense thriller limited series Long Bright River for the Peacock streaming service. The WWE Network streaming service will shutter at the end of 2024, as all of its content will move to Netflix outside the United States.
The WWE is officially coming to the world’s largest streaming service. Earlier this week, Netflix and the WWE agreed to an international deal that will see “Monday Night Raw” air live on Netflix every week for the next decade in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and other territories — although, the “Monday Night” part of the name might need to be changed. Outside the U.S., the deal also means that WWE titles like “SmackDown,” “Nxt” and live premium events will also move to Netflix, but where does that leave the on-demand WWE Network?
WWE Network is primarily responsible for distributing most WWE programming in territories outside the United States. Reports indicate WWE Network will close down at the end of 2024, as all of...

It’s hardly a secret that viewership of the annual Academy Awards telecast on ABC has been in precipitous decline over the past four years or so in the age of Covid, with a notable but comparatively modest upward bump last year. It was in 2021 that the ratings and audience numbers suffered a massive nosedive in the wake of the coronavirus closing theaters and wreaking havoc with the release schedule, plummeting from 23.6 million viewers on average in 2020 to a scant 10.4 million in 2021. The audience rebounded in 2022 – to 16.6 million – and then a bit more last year, to 18.7 million.
But hope springs eternal this year in the age of “Barbenheimer.” For the first time in some two decades, a genuine box office phenomenon is favored to win Best Picture. In 2004, it was the international blockbuster “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.” This time, it’s “Oppenheimer.” Back in...

Data released by the streamer in a shareholders letter provides some clues as to where it can make more meaningful expansions.
As rival streaming executives looked on with envy, Netflix unveiled its fourth quarter 2023 earnings report on Tuesday. The company revealed it had more than 260 million subscribers around the world, but in a letter to shareholders it also announced which countries could potentially see a greater investment of time and money as Netflix tries to increase its subscriber base and viewership share in them.
In markets like Mexico, Spain, Brazil, and Poland, streaming makes up less than 25% of total TV viewing. As the strongest streaming brand in the world, Netflix is in an excellent position to increase penetration in these countries. The streamer is already expanding the amount of titles it produces internationally, and subscribers should expect that to continue. Sign Up $6.99+ / month netflix.com Where Can Netflix Go Next?...

In a letter to shareholders this week, Netflix said its ad-supported tier now accounts for 40% of all sign-ups in territories where it’s available.
There’s a veritable advertising revolution going on at Netflix. The streamer, which for years resisted the addition of ads to any of its streaming plans, has done a complete turnaround, and in a letter to shareholders this week Netflix touted its Standard with Ads plan as having increased its subscriber base by 70% in both the third and fourth quarters of 2023. Standard with Ads is a big part of the reason that Netflix was able to net an additional 13.12 million subscribers in Q4 of last year, and the company has plans to ensure its continued adoption by customers.

Buckle up to pay even more, Netflix subscribers. In its Q4 shareholder letter, the company all but assured another price hike in the near future.
The company’s letter included this sentence: “As we invest in and improve Netflix, we’ll occasionally ask our members to pay a little extra to reflect those improvements, which in turn helps drive the positive flywheel of additional investment to further improve and grow our service.”
Netflix last raised prices in October of 2023. In July of last year, the company's CFO said Netflix wouldn't raise prices until mid-2024.
Netflix may feel it has the momentum to apply another price hike since it just had its best quarter of domestic subscriber growth since the pandemic-fueled leap of Q2 2020. Netflix added nearly 3 million subscribers in the U.S. and Canada to end 2023.
The company said it’s continuing to refine its strategy regarding pricing, advertising, and account-sharing.

Searchlight, home of numerous Oscar best-picture winners, propelled Disney’s film empire to the top of this year’s studios scorecard of most Oscar nominations.
Disney walked away with 20 nominations Tuesday morning for movies from its myriad film stables. Searchlight accounted for 13 of those, including 11 for Poor Things. The Yorgos Lanthimos-directed movie landed a spot in numerous top categories, including best picture, best director and best actress (Emma Stone). Among Disney’s other noms, Pixar’s Elemental is up for best animated feature, while National Geographic Films landed a spot in the best documentary feature category for Bobi Wine: The People’s President.
In recent years, streamers — i.e., Netflix — often bested the legacy Hollywood studios and top indie distributors in terms of nominations. This year, like last, saw a more even playing field. Netflix took home 18 Oscar nominations Tuesday to tie with Universal’s film empire, which includes Focus Features.

David Fincher seems happy with no cinema screens but all of the creative control as he reveals he has extended his deal with the streaming giant Netflix.
David Fincher has renewed his deal with Netflix for another three years, it’s been revealed.
Fincher has been involved with the streaming company in one way or another since it first dipped its toe into creating original programming and films. The Se7en director produced House Of Cards, the Netflix show which revolutionised the way the company operated and saw it shift from licensing films and shows to instead become a production powerhouse in its own right.
That was a decade ago – back in 2013 – and David Fincher has only strengthened his working relationship with Netflix in the years since, producing TV shows such as Mindhunter and Love, Death And Robots for the company.

If Hollywood executive shuffles were an Oscar category, Scott Stuber would take home the trophy for scene-stealing announcement.

The world’s largest streamer is saying ‘No, thank you’ to creating dedicated software for Apple’s new reality-altering device.

The 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards gave us our first true surprises of this year’s awards season. Since it is the first major kudos with five-nominee slots in each category, there was a number of snubs in the acting categories, one of whom was Sandra Hüller for “Anatomy of a Fall,” in a sea of exclusions that included Leonardo DiCaprio (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things”), Andrew Scott (“All of Us Strangers”), Greta Lee (“Past Lives”), Fantasia Barrino (“The Color Purple”), Rosamund Pike (“Saltburn”), America Ferrera (“Barbie”), and the trio of actors from “May December”: Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore and Charles Melton.
But fear not, they all still have hope yet for receiving recognition from the academy, particularly Hüller, who is the only performance from an international film in the bunch. She plays Sandra Voyter in Justine Triet‘s award-winning film, a woman who tries to...

Netflix’s Standard with Ads plan got off to a slow start, but it now seems to be a runaway freight train.
When Netflix takes the stage just about anywhere, it’s a good bet that the company is about to make some news. Four of our five predicted Oscar nominees for Best Sound number among the contenders for the Cinema Audio Society Awards for sound mixing announced on Jan. 9. Oscar frontrunner “Oppenheimer” reaped a bid as did three of its closest competitors –“Ferrari,” “Maestro,” “and “Killers of the Flower Moon.” The fifth nominee at the Cas is “Barbie,” which we have in 7th place on our Oscars chart. It bumped our fourth-place contender “The Zone of Interest.”

Mobile games have long been a focus of growth for Netflix, but the streamer might be on the verge of changing its philosophy.
Netflix has put a substantial amount of resources into its mobile games division over the past few years with the assumption that if the world’s largest streaming company could also become a leading platform for video games, it would be even more indispensable to consumers than it already is. However, a recent report by the Wall Street Journal indicates that a pivot may be coming that would change the way that Netflix approaches video games moving forward. The company has long resisted putting ads and in-app purchases into its games as a way to distinguish it from other mobile game providers, but just as it did by introducing ads to shows and movies, the streaming giant might reconsider this stance.

David Fincher‘s “The Killer” and Michael Mann‘s “Ferrari” are two of the most visually sophisticated films of the fall season, though their approaches are as different as those two directors’ sensibilities. “The Killer” is icy and deglamorized where “Ferrari” is smoking hot and visceral; Fincher puts his character under a microscope for the audience to study like a microbe, while Mann wants the audience in the driver’s seat with his passionate and committed characters. What the two films have in common is an attention to light, color, and framing as expressive tools that is exceptional in its precision; few movies in recent memory have guided the viewer’s eye in such an intentional and affecting manner. That’s because of something else these movies share: cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt.
Just seven years ago, Messerschmidt was a respected gaffer on series like “Mad Men” and “Bones.” That changed when,...

It’s Me, Margaret” all received Best Adapted Screenplay bids from the Critics Choice Awards thus giving their Oscar hopes in this category a timely boost. Some of them were lauded even further at the Golden Globes, which nominated “Poor Things,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” alongside “Barbie,” “Past Lives,” and “Anatomy of Fall” in a combined Best Screenplay category.
So, those are the preferences of those two awards groups. But what about the tastes of the academy? Well, below is a chart detailing the last 10 Oscar winners for Best Adapted Screenplay. We’re going to break this down to see what the academy likes and try to apply the findings to this year’s race.

As 2024 approaches, streamers are hoping for more profits, bigger sports slates, and maybe even some awards hardware.
There are just a few days left in 2023! It’s been a transformative and corrective year in the streaming industry, as platforms shifted gears in response to market pressures to seek out profitability. Some companies were more successful than others, and now each must decide what their goals in 2024 will be based on what happened in 2023.
What will top streaming services be aiming for in 2024? Will they be realistic goals, or will they be pie-in-the-sky glimmers that only have a small chance of coming true?
Netflix: Settle on an Acquisition Target
As the only streaming service to already turn a regular profit, Netflix has different priorities than many of its competitors. Its financials are already pretty well in order, so it can focus on getting its content pipeline back in total working...

“Saltburn,” “Oppenheimer,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” and “Asteroid City” all earned nominations from the Critics Choice Awards for Best Production Design. That bodes well for each film’s Oscar chances this year. But before we get too ahead of ourselves by predicting who might win this category, let’s take a look back at the last 10 Oscar winners for Best Production Design.
We’re going to take a look at the academy’s tastes here to see what type of films in what type of setting they nominate most. Then, we’ll try to apply those findings to this year’s race as we scrutinize the movies hoping for a nomination in this design category. Here we go.
These 10 winners seem like totally different movies but a closer look does show some similarities. Firstly, seven out of the 10 are set in the real world. “The Shape of Water...

Netflix’s “Maestro” is out on the streaming service this Christmas and the period film will surely delight film lovers and movie fans alike. Bradley Cooper‘s Leonard Bernstein film isn’t an ordinary biopic as it dispenses the tired cradle-to-grave true story trope to focus entirely on Bernstein’s marriage to Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan). The film spans decades including the 50s, 60s, and 70s, and each part of the film is made in the style of filmmaking used in said period. This makes for a wonderfully visual spectacle with the sets, costumes, and hair and makeup all some of the best work in each area of filmmaking. Add to that excellent acting from Cooper and Mulligan as well as top-tier directing, cinematography, and editing and you’ve got an Oscars hopeful that could reap bids in multiple categories. Let’s break it down.
