Jj Abrams is one of the most powerful people in Hollywood right now. Over his career in the movies, he's written, directed, produced, acted and played a wicked keyboard solo on Cool Guys Don't Look At Explosions, and through his production company Bad Robot, his name is counted among the credits of massive franchises like Cloverfield, Mission: Impossible, Star Trek and of course Star Wars. He's more of a household name than most filmmakers of his generation and we sometimes wish we wanted anything as much as he wants that Steven Spielberg status.
You can't blame him when you hear about his first paid job in the film industry. Returning a bunch of Spielberg's personal super-8 home movies that he discovered after his...

Looking for good books about the movies to read? We've got a bumper selection of recommendations right here...
A confession. I actually started writing this article in 2013, and the reason you've only reading it now is that I've made sure I've read every book on this list, save for one or two where I've marked otherwise. As such, what you're getting is a very personal list of recommendations. Each of these books has at least something to it that I think is of interest to someone wanting to learn more about film - or just enjoy stories of movie making.
I've tended to avoid picture books, with one exception, as these ones I've chosen are all intended to be chock-full of words, to relax with at the end of a long day. Which is what I did. There are one or two notable omissions, as I'm still...

In the Loop - a political farce set in London and Washington - is the brilliant cinematic debut of Armando Iannucci. Here, in a candid behind-the-scenes diary, the satirist reveals the joys of playing basketball with star James Gandolfini and the pleasure of a hometown screening in front of his eightysomething mum ...
We didn't even have a piece of paper to start with. I'd been told that most films start with a small piece of paper. On it is written a one-line version of your film. "A small-town family murder their cleaner and then bury her in some waste ground that then gets built on by a shoe manufacturer, whose shoes are haunted by her deranged spirit, resulting in a little girl kicking the town's mayor to death but with very...

This week on Dead Air Shawn Savage and Jeff Konopka tackle the new Tim Burton feature Dark Shadows. While I do not believe either gentleman was a fan of the original or simply have not had the chance to get into it, each found something to appreciate about the movie. It’s not a perfect movie by any measure. With the recent loss of Jonathon Frid I hope it at least gets noticed by a few folks who would like to celebrate the life of the great horror soap opera of the recent age. I myself will be waiting for it to arrive safely on cable television where I already pay too much anyway rather than spending another dollar at the theater for a potentially sub-par release. I myself am just a wee itty bitty fan boy of the original. Having your heartbroken at no additional charge is always better...

If you're like me and you tend to be fascinated by stories of egos clashing and bone-headed decisions being made behind closed doors in Hollywood, then here's a book you might want to check out. Tales from Development Hell: The Greatest Movies Never Made? is written by Empire Magazine contributor David Hughes, the same guy who wrote The Greatest Sci-fi Movies Never Made, and it brings us a whole new set of tales of blockbusters gone awry. The book was actually published back in 2004, but a new edition hits stores next week with some updated chapters and a new foreword (not to mention, much more aesthetically pleasing cover art). Although The Greatest Sci-fi Movies Never Made sometimes stretched the limits of what could be considered "sci-fi", there are no such restrictions here, as it covers everything from Total Recall and Batman: Year One to The Lord of the Rings and The Aviator.

Well it's not quite a real horror documentary like the ones we know and love, Tales from the Script (2010) profiles some of the most creative, influential, and downright innovative writers in Hollywood. Names such as John Carpenter, Frank Darabont, Mick Garris, John August, William Goldman, Shane Black and many others share their experiences in the painstaking and often horrific moments that go into making a movie come to life. This documentary…...

As if you needed any more incentive to pick up Sega's new Aliens: Infestation side-scrolling game for the Nintendo DS, it contains this awesome song. (But you don't need any extra incentive, because it's already a freaking Aliens side-scrolling game.) Thanks to @Paul_Gandersman for the find. The next bit of Afternoon Filler we have for you is a clip from the documentary Tales From the Script. In said clip, screenwriter Guinevere Turner tells a nice little tale about having written Bloodrayne for Uwe Boll. Spoiler alert: Uwe Boll sounds delightful to work for. And finally, we have 12 minutes of the best special effects you've ever seen in your life. I almost feel bad posting it, but if budding vfx designer Martin Gamal wants to share this with the world, who...

Are the creators of some of today's most popular TV shows becoming more famous than our most well-known filmmakers? I don't know if we're there just yet, but the upcoming documentary Showrunners finally shines a spotlight on the intriguing personalities behind many of our favourite shows, and explores what it takes to get a show on the air nowadays. If you're a fan of such shows as Lost, Fringe, House, Battlestar Galactica, Spartacus or Sons of Anarchy, you'll probably want to check this one out. Before you ask, though, Joss Whedon is notably absent. Directed by Des Doyle, a camera assistant for such films as Reign of Fire and It Might Get Loud, the documentary is comprised mainly of interviews with various current television writers and series creators. It seems similar to the screenwriter documentary Tales from the Script, and I can only hope that it features some equally fascinating success and horror stories.

Despite some initial rumblings of discontent about her casting, Scarlett Johansson dispelled fans' worries when she slipped into a skintight catsuit as Black Widow in this year's Iron Man 2.
Johansson was cast after Emily Blunt had to pull out and, having fully embraced the character, will go on to reprise the role in 2012 team-up film The Avengers.
But that's not all we could be seeing of Black Widow. She is now set to have her own spin-off.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige had earlier hinted at the possibility of a solo film and in the meantime the idea seems to have crystallised.
At a press conference last night for the release of the Iron Man 2 DVD and Blu-ray, Feige said talks were now under way with the actress but nothing would move forward until after The Avengers.

A couple of weeks ago, we featured a seriously random list here -- Demonstrating the Importance of Directors by Highlighting the Failures of Screenwriters -- that was inspired by Peter Hanson's documentary, Tales from the Script, a thought-provoking doc that examines, through interviews with screenwriters, the scriptwriting process and how a screenplay morphs on its way to the big screen. What we came away with was the perception that even the most successful screenwriter often has no control over the finished product.
Writer/Director Peter Hanson was nice enough to submit to an email interview with us and eloquently discuss his documentary, his thoughts on the screenwriting process, and the role -- ultimately -- of the screenwriter in the development of the film.
To get the ball rolling, can you provide some information on your background, what you do, and what makes you an expert in the art of screenwriting?...

It's been more than a little while since our last Netflix Instant post, but we're back with a vengeance this week catching up on some titles already available and adding some new titles which will be available later this week. Between our last update and this one, we got word that a Netflix app will hit the iPhone later this summer allowing you to stream your favorite instant titles right into the palm of your hand. With or without Roger Ebert's blessing, new film titles that you'll soon be able to view include a must-see documentary for aspiring screenwriters, an absolute childhood classic, and lots of sharks. So what's in our queue this week? Tales from the Script (Available Now): While it's not the most groundbreaking documentary and the seemingly endless talking heads become a bit repetitive, this is a must-see for anybody who is or has ever been an aspiring screenwriter.

I wanted very badly to believe in the Schreiber theory -- the belief that the principal author of a film is generally the screenwriter rather than the director -- because I come from a writer-ly background (the use of the word writer-ly notwithstanding). It makes the most sense to me. But after watching Tales From the Script, processing yesterday's exercise, and poring over the comments, I can't subscribe to a theory which holds that the surest predictor of the quality of a film lies in the screenwriter. There are too many examples of well-thought-of directors making good films based on the scripts of mediocre screenwriters, and not enough examples of bad directors making good movies based on the scripts of well-thought-of screenwriters. Filmmaking is a process, and there are a great many factors that influence the outcome of a film -- talent, editing, casting, production -- but if any one...

Well if anything has a shot at beating Alice in Wonderland at the box office this weekend, it's probably the Jay Baruchel comedy She's Out of My League, or possibly the Robert Pattinson / Emilie de Ravin romantic drama Remember Me, although that would clearly be a tall order for either one. Paul Greengrass' latest film Green Zone starring Matt Damon is also a contender, but seems to be suffering from poor reviews and general lack of interest. Other new movies in theatres this weekend include the Forest Whitaker comedy Our Family Wedding, and in limited release we have Bong Joon-Ho's Mother and a documentary about screenwriting called Tales from the Script. I implore any prospective or fledgling screenwriters out there to see the new documentary Tales from the Script. And afterward, if you still feel like attempting to break into that highly competitive and rarely rewarding side of the movie business, then it's possible this is indeed the right dream and career for you. As Taxi Driver and Raging Bull scribe Paul Schrader says in the film, "if you can be happy doing anything else, do that."
Tales from the Script is basically just a supplement to the recently published book of the same name by Peter Hanson and Paul Robert Herman (or vice versa, the book can be seen as the companion piece to the film). Hanson also directed the documentary, which features interviews with a number of celebrated screenwriters, including Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption), Shane Black (Lethal Weapon) and William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid), as...

Questioning Greatness with Adam Rifkin:
Earth’S Premiere Storyteller
We (Bob Rose, me, I?) at the Opinion In A Haystack Department are proud to announce that I (we?) were (was?) given the chance to pick the brain bucket of Hollywood’s supreme philosopher and film-creationist, Sir Adam Rifkin (facebook, twitter, myspace.) He’s the filmmaker responsible for Detroit Rock City, The Chase, The Dark Backward, and, more recently, the award winning Look. I was able to sit down with Mr. Rifkin, in front of our respective computers, and interview him, via email, about a plethora of assorted, varied, diverse, sundry, indiscriminate, and heavily kaleidoscopic ideas.
I originally sent Mr. Rifkin over 3,000 questions, most of which involved very uncomfortable queries about his family lineage, sexual fears, and Laserdisc-replica collection. He answered all of them in full detail, thus passing the interview-qualification-process, which allowed me to send him the 16 questions you will find below.

Trailer – “Tales From the Script” (The Most Comprehensive Documentary Ever Made About Screenwriting)
Screenwriters, Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption), William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid), Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver), Shane Black (Lethal Weapon), John Carpenter (Halloween), and dozens of other Hollywood screenwriters share penetrating insights and hilarious anecdotes in Peter Hanson’s Tales from the Script, described as “the most comprehensive documentary ever made about screenwriting,” according to the press release.

I’ve already previously expressed my dislike of the screenwriting process on this blog, even though I am a filmmaker, so this is something that I’d definitely be interested in seeing… if only to validate my reasons for disliking the process
First Run Features will release the film in a limited theatrical release in March.

If you’re a fan of movies, you can’t help but love hearing the crazy behind-the-scenes stories of what goes into the making of a major Hollywood film — the unfortunate thing is that a lot of the best stories go unheard, because no one wants to publicly bad mouth anyone or burn bridges in the industry. Well, somehow Peter Hanson and Paul Robert Herman managed to get an impressive line-up of highly respected folks to sit down and talk about their experiences, specifically related to the topic of screenwriting. The result is the documentary and accompanying non-fiction book Tales from the Script. I have to admit, it was names like John Carpenter, Frank Darabont, and Paul Schrader that initially attracted my attention, but after watching the trailer for the film, every single one of these interviews seems compelling. The movie clearly delves into the fact that screenwriters are the unsung heroes of Hollywood,...
