Magnet Releasing, the genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, has acquired North American rights to “What You Wish For,” a new suspense-horror film written and directed by Nicholas Tomnay.
The film stars Nick Stahl (Showtime’s “Let the Right One In”) and had its world premiere at Fantasia Festival. Tamsin Topolski (“Slow Horses”) and Randy Vasquez (“America Has Fallen: Election Day”) also star. Magnet plans to release the film this summer. Tomnay previously co-wrote and directed “The Perfect Host,” which starred David Hyde Pierce.
In “What You Wish For,” Stahl plays Ryan, a talented chef whose crushing gambling problems prompts him to leave town in a hurry for the safe haven of an unnamed Latin American country. There, his friend Jack (Brian Groh), a more prestigious chef with his own unique troubles, welcomes him into his home. Ryan has no idea how Jack’s able to afford his extravagant lifestyle, and...

Since the onset of the Multiverse Saga in the MCU, it has been evident that Kang the Conqueror and his variants would emerge as the next main villains. The first season of ‘Loki’ introduced us to He Who Remains, a morally ambiguous version of Kang tasked with maintaining balance in the Sacred Timeline and shielding it from his malevolent variants that once triggered the Multiversal War.
Subsequently, ‘Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania’ provided a glimpse of Kang the Conqueror and the havoc he can unleash across the Multiverse. The post-credit scenes unveiled the existence, in Kang’s own words, of even more malevolent variants seeking to subjugate time itself.
Alex P., a highly reliable source on all things MCU, recently revealed on X that there would be Kang variants representing both good and bad sides of the character, indicating that the upcoming phases will likely showcase an approximately equal number of benevolent and malevolent Kangs.

Ever since the Multiverse Saga of the MCU began, we were aware that the next big villain of the MCU would be Kang the Conqueror & his variants. When the first season of ‘Loki’ dropped, we got our first taste of He Who Remains as a somewhat morally grey version of Kang that was supposed to keep the Sacred Timeline balanced and protected from his evil variants that once upon a time started the Multiversal War.
Then came ‘Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania,’ which gave us our first taste of Kang the Conqueror and the chaos he is able to sow throughout the Multiverse. The post-credit scenes reveal the existence of, in his own words, far worse variants that are looking to enslave the time itself.

Exclusive: Anna-Maria Sieklucka (365 Days) has been tapped to star opposite Charlotte Kirk (The Lair) in the psychological thriller Compulsion. The film which is set to start shooting next week in Malta hails from Neil Marshall (The Descent), who will direct from his own script.
Inspired by such notable erotic thrillers of the ’80s and ’90s as Fatal Attraction, Basic Instinct and Single White Female, Compulsion centers around the dynamically twisted relationship between two women, as both become embroiled in a series of horrific murders on the island of Malta. Kirk’s character, Diana, is described as a flamboyant and ruthless thief; Sieklucka’s Evie, as a seemingly innocent young woman with a troubled past and a dark secret.
Also starring Zach McGowan (Dracula Untold), Giulia Gorietti (Suburra), Cinzia Monreale (The Beyond) and Harvey Dean (Sea Dragon), Compulsion will be produced by Kristyna Sellnerova for Kristyna Sellnerova Ltd, with executive producer Emily Corcoran,...

[Editor’s note: The following post contains spoilers for both “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and its post-credits scenes.]
Newly minted Marvel baddie Kang the Conquerer (Jonathan Majors) may lord over Peyton Reed’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” but that’s only the start of what’s to come for the villain in the coming years of the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Majors was cast in “Quantumania” in September 2020, with the entertainment giant eventually signing him for a deal that will include starring roles in Phase 6 features “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” (in 2025) and “Avengers: Secret Wars” (in 2026). In 2021, he made his Marvel debut in an episode of “Loki,” appearing as one of Kang’s many, many variants.
So, while “Quantumania” may end with the classic villain being defeated by Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man and Evangeline Lilly’s The Wasp, he’s not really going anywhere. It’s only fitting that both of the film’s post-credits scenes follow Kang and his growing influence.

This article contains spoilers for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
“I have so many names…” Yes, that’s Al Pacino speaking as the titular fallen angel in The Devil’s Advocate. But the line may apply just as well to Kang the Conqueror, the new supervillain played by Jonathan Majors in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, who’s poised to menace the Avengers and the MCU from now until at least 2026—when some kind of massive showdown will take place in Avengers: Secret Wars.
Of course regular MCU viewers have already met one version of Kang previously thanks to the last episode of the Disney+ series Loki. There he was billed as He Who Remains. His stated mission on that series? To keep the multiverse (and the multitudes of much more malevolent Kangs in them) contained. It’s also a goal which ended with his death at the hands of Loki variant Sylvie.

Neil Marshall is firmly in what I consider phase three of his career. Phase one would be defined as being his breakout and period between Dog Soldiers to Centurion, phase two would be his TV career, directing pilots and key episodes of Black Sails, Game of Thrones and Lost in Space, and phase three would be his dive back into feature films, developing smaller scale genre vehicles for (and with) his his partner, actress Charlotte Kirk.
The first two films in this phase have been the witch trials thriller, The Reckoning and the mutant horror actioner, The Lair. Both have their ups and downs, but while many old school Mars...

Two decades after making his debut with werewolf war movie “Dog Soldiers,” Neil Marshall offers another spin on military-vs.-monsters action in “The Lair,” a semi-return to form that’s energetic if uninspired and increasingly silly. Nonetheless, it represents a bit of a rebound after the disasters of last year’s “The Reckoning” and an unhappy “Hellboy” reboot he disowned. This first issue from Scarlett Prods., the company he founded with star, co-writer and executive producer Charlotte Kirk, gets released by Rlje Films to limited U.S. theaters as well as VOD and digital Oct. 28. Launch on multi-territory genre streaming platform Shudder is planned for early next year.

England. 1665. The great plague has caused a frenzy of fear, distrust and death. Desperate and terrified, the population turns to superstition, the Catholic Church taking cruel advantage of the grim witch-hunting opportunities presented. Recently widowed Grace Haverstock is at her wit’s end when her landlord attempts to force her into paying debts with sexual favours. Her refusal means she must face horrific interrogations at the hands of Britain’s most ruthless Witchfinder General. But she is not alone. And her journey won’t end here without a reckoning.
I’m going to be honest, the name Neil Marshall doesn’t seem to carry the same kudos is once had, especially after many fans felt his Hellboy adaptation lacklustre. However I am in the opposite camp… I truly enjoyed...

Musical biopic “Rebellion” has wrapped after a four-week shoot in Bogota, Colombia, making it one of the few pics to have filmed in the country since the Covid-19 pandemic breakout in 2020. The film about Afro-Colombian salsa icon Joe Arroyo is directed by Jose Luis Rugeles, whose previous drama “Alias María,” about a pregnant 13-year-old member of a guerrilla unit, competed in the 2015 Cannes Un Certain Regard sidebar and represented Colombia at the 89th Academy Awards.
“Rebellion’s” compelling soundtrack, produced by Alacran Records and recorded at Alacran Studios in Miami, will feature a new single cover of his biggest hit, the titular “Rebellion,” by popular Colombian hip hop band, ChocQuibTown. Its lead singer Gloria “Goyo” Martínez will sing the anthem, marking the first time a woman sings it. Soundtrack and single will be released in time for the film’s world premiere next year. This week, British actor, writer and director Noel Clarke has made headlines after being accused of groping, harassment and bullying by 20 women.
Clarke played Mickey Smith in “Doctor Who” from 2005 to 2010 and starred as Sam in the films “Kidulthood,” “Adulthood” and “Brotherhood,” which he wrote and directed, intent on bringing more representations of working-class Britain to screen. Clarke also writes, produces and plays Aaron Bishop in the British police procedural series “Bulletproof,” alongside close friend Ashley Walters.
Clarke made his film debut in 2003’s “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead” and has since starred in movies including “Star Trek Into Darkness,” “Centurion,” “4.3.2.1.,” “Fast Girls,” “Storage 24,” “I Am Soldier,” “The Anomaly,” “I Kill Giants,” “Mute,” “10×10,” “The Corrupted,” “Twist” and “Sas: Red Notice.”
In 2015, Clarke founded the London-based production company Unstoppable Film and Television with Jason Maza, eventually securing investment from super-indie All3Media, which owns “Fleabag” producer Two Brothers and “1917” outfit Neal Street Productions.

Charlotte Kirk in The Reckoning
Director Neil Marshall has enjoyed an eclectic career but is probably most celebrated for his work in horror. His latest offering, The Reckoning, takes us back to that territory as it tells the story of Grace – played by Charlotte Kirk – a young woman facing persecution during the plague years, when suffering was easily blamed on witches. When I met Neil and Charlotte to discuss the film, we chatted about his work on Game Of Thrones and I asked if this film, with its period setting, had enabled him to combine two of his passions as a filmmaker.
“Yes, certainly I love period settings for things,” he says. “I suppose, you know, with Centurion as well, which is a period thing which actually paved the way for me to doing Game Of Thrones. I've always loved creating worlds and being in and being in other worlds.

"There's only one thing that can explain it - she made a pact with the devil!" Rlje Films has released an official trailer for The Reckoning, a new horror thriller from British filmmaker Neil Marshall. This first premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival last year, and it also played in Germany's Fantasy Filmfest, now set for a VOD release starting in February. A young widow accused of being a witch defends herself against the clergy and patriarchy. It's described as a "gory revenge thriller in historical guise", starring Charlotte Kirk (who also co-wrote the script and executive produced) as a woman unjustly accused of being a witch who is placed in the custody of England's most ruthless witch-hunter. The cast also includes Joe Anderson, Steven Waddington, and Sean Pertwee. This trailer has tons of creepy footage, and Marshall definitely knows how to make a good horror film. This is worth a look.

To celebrate the 4K Digital release of Dog Soldiers, we’re giving away an iTunes voucher.
Things are getting hairy as Vertigo Releasing re-release the classic British troops-versus-werewolves horror Dog Soldiers, with a superb 4K restoration, and stunning, newly-commissioned promotional artwork by legendary illustrator Chris Malbon, in UK cinemas and available on digital platforms this October. One of the great British horror films, and certainly one of the best werewolf films ever, Neil Marshall’s debut grossed £5 million at the box office when it was first released in 2002, and quickly became a bona fide fan favourite.
It’s The Howling meets Ultimate Force, with an irresistible mix of foul-mouthed squaddies taking on vicious werewolves, combined with plenty of blood and gore, and brilliantly effective action set pieces. Ahead of the UK premiere of his latest film The Reckoning, Neil Marshall talks about the desire for creative freedom, putting leading lady Charlotte Kirk through hell, his love for FrightFest and his urge to make something outrageously violent and bloodthirsty again.
The Reckoning sees you returning to the horror genre. Was this an important factor in choosing to make the film?
Absolutely. After the nightmare of Hellboy, which was a deeply dissatisfying creative experience on so many levels – I’d originally been hired to bring a horror angle to Hellboy and was never allowed to do that – so I had an itch that needed scratching. I’d been wanting to do another horror movie for a while, and for various reasons, one of which was so I could bring something back to FrightFest, because I love this festival so much. It feels like coming home again. The whole festival scene is a buzz,...

For director Ridley Scott, it was one look at a 19th-century neoclassical work of art that convinced him to make the Oscar-winning picture “Gladiator.” Jean-Léon Gérôme’s painting “Pollice Verso” depicts an armored gladiator in the ring, triumphantly facing onlookers as the crowd reacts with thumbs turned down, signaling their approval for the fighter to deliver a final, fatal blow. Without even knowing what the film’s story would be, Scott signed on to build a Roman Empire saga that would go on to score five Academy Awards.
Raking in over $460 million dollars globally on what Scott told Variety was at the time a massive budget of $103 million, the film triumphed at the box office when it debuted on May 5, 2000. The Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix action drama paved the way for more historical epics like “300,” “Troy” and “Centurion.” Steven Spielberg at Dreamworks, already in a three-picture deal with screenwriter David Franzoni,...

The Reckoning
Even though English director Neil Marshall’s first foray into franchise filmmaking with 2019’s Hellboy was a critical and financial disappointment (and broke a nine year hiatus between feature films), the genre auteur will be returning with something to be a bit more excited for with The Reckoning, a return to the genre tropes from his earlier features. The UK film is produced by Daniel-Konrad Cooper and Steffen Wild and stars Charlotte Kirk, Joe Anderson, Steven Waddington and Sean Pertwee. Marshall became an instant genre director of note with his 2005 hit The Descent, followed by his Mad Max homage Doomsday (2008) and his 2010 period drama Centurion (read review).…...

Once upon a time, after Tim Burton let his freak bat-signal fly but before every cape came with a free cinematic universe, superhero movies were a grungy, pulpy business. Go back and watch the ’90s stuff, like Blade or Spawn or The Crow. There was something kind of grindhouse-ish about a lot of them, even as they aspired for A-list blockbuster status; producers had figured out that people would go see comic book characters onscreen who weren’t Batman or Spider-Man, but assumed no one would take them that seriously (yet). Especially if,...

"My job is: protect the world from boogie monsters!" With the movie opening in theaters later this week, Lionsgate has launched one final red band trailer for the new Hellboy movie, directed by Neil Marshall. This fresh reboot of the live-action Hellboy series re-casts the main role, with David Harbour playing the big red guy with horns and a stone arm. This final trailer really plays up the hard-r rating, with excessive violence and gore and language throughout. But is the movie any good? You'll have to see it this weekend and find out. The full cast includes Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, Daniel Dae Kim, Sasha Lane, Thomas Haden Church, Penelope Mitchell, Sophie Okonedo, Brian Gleeson, and Kristina Klebe. Who's planning to go? Anyone? Likely Hellboy fans only. Here's the third & final red band trailer (+ a featurette) for Neil Marshall's Hellboy, direct from YouTube: You can still watch the...

Neil Marshall has been so busy with big budget television for so long that it's hard to believe his last feature film was Centurion back in 2010. Well, the director is finally back at it with the latest large screen adaptation of Hellboy, this time starring Stranger Things actor David Harbour as Big Red. After the initial green band trailer was met with mixed reactions online, Lionsgate has released a red band trailer to go along with the announcement that the film will indeed be R rated as Marshall promised all along it would be. This trailer has a decidedly different tone and the use of a dark rendition of "Smoke on the Water" rather than Billy Idol's "Mony Mony" makes me think the studio...

"Why do you fight for those who hate and fear you?" Summit + Lionsgate have debuted a badass second trailer for the new Hellboy movie, directed by Neil Marshall. This fresh reboot of the live-action Hellboy series re-casts the main role, with David Harbour playing the big red guy with horns and a stone arm. Hellboy is forced to work the B.P.R.D, cleaning up nasty paranormal bad guys for the government (in London this time). The primary cast includes Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, Daniel Dae Kim, Sasha Lane, Thomas Haden Church, Penelope Mitchell, Sophie Okonedo, Brian Gleeson, and Kristina Klebe. They went all out on the violence this time, especially with an R-rating, and it clearly shows. Whether that makes it a better movie, we'll have to wait & see. I will say - this trailer is badass!! "Does it do anything special?" "Yeah - it smashes things real good." Summit + Lionsgate have unveiled the first official trailer for the new Hellboy movie, directed by Neil Marshall. This fresh reboot of the live-action Hellboy movie series re-casts the main role, with David Harbour playing the big red guy with horns and a stone arm. This looks like another new origin story, taking us through his usual routine working for the B.P.R.D, cleaning up nasty paranormal bad guys for the government. The primary cast includes Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, Daniel Dae Kim, Sasha Lane, Thomas Haden Church, Penelope Mitchell, Sophie Okonedo, Brian Gleeson, and Kristina Klebe. This looks a bit more humorous than Guillermo del Toro's version, and much more violent and fully R-rated as well. I will need to warm up to it a bit more, but I'm digging this first look so far.

Winter is indeed upon us, as “Game of Thrones” has just wrapped its truncated seventh season with a jaw-dropping finale that moves plenty of pieces (most of them terrifying, ice-cold, and dragon-aided) into place for a game-changer of a final season…that won’t come until sometime in 2018. It’s the Long Night, all over again (and, if those gently falling snowflakes during some of the finale’s last moments are any indication, fans of the HBO series aren’t the only ones headed for a chilling, unforgiving few months).
In order to keep diehard viewers sated until its last episodes hit the small screen, here are some ideas for films that might help ease the pain, from classic Westerns to underseen historical dramas, all with that special “Thrones” touch (murderous, political, bloody, and at least partially beholden to mythical beasts).

With filming expected to begin later this month on The Strangers 2, the first official casting details for the sequel have been revealed.
Deadline reports that Christina Hendricks (Drive, Mad Men), Bailee Madison (The Night Before Halloween, Good Witch) and Lewis Pullman (Aftermath) have joined the cast of The Strangers 2, which will be directed by Johannes Roberts (The Other Side of the Door) from a screenplay that was worked on by Bryan Bertino (writer/director of 2008's The Strangers) and Ben Ketai.
Character details for the trio of actors have yet to be revealed, but this follow-up to 2008's The Strangers will take place in a trailer park, and when we recently asked producer Trevor Macy if The Strangers 2 will see the return of the three masked killers from the original movie, he said, "I think that is safe to say."

Read between the lines of the news that Millennium Films is developing a “Hellboy” reboot and you’ll find a major diss. Back in January, Guillermo Del Toro asked his Twitter followers if they’d like a third installment of his colorful approach to Mike Mignola’s comic book series; the response was overwhelmingly positive. One month later, Del Toro announced that the sequel would not go forward, but the producers and Millennium had other plans. The studio’s now developing a new “Hellboy” adaptation directed by Neil Marshall (“Descent,” “Game of Thrones”), and speaking to “Stranger Things” detective David Harbour for the leading role. Theoretically, that’s an exciting concept — but it’s also a problematic one.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday morning. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?” can be found at the end of this post.)
At long last, the Alamo Drafthouse is finally opening in Brooklyn this Friday, complementing a new wave of New York City cinemas that already includes the Metrograph, the Nitehawk (which will soon open another location), and the iPic chain, and is scheduled to add several more exciting venues 2017. With that exciting news in mind, we’ve put forward the following question to our panel of critics: What is the best movie theater that you have ever been to, and what made it so special?
Miriam Bale (@mimbale), Freelance
The Castro Theater in San Francisco is obviously the best. See anything there and you’ll know why.
