After claiming four César awards, including best picture, and a Cannes jury prize with 2019’s “Les Misérables,” and co-producing last year’s Venice winner “Happening,” rising producers Toufik Ayadi and Christophe Barral have set for themselves, and for their follow-up feature, an altogether different task: Paving a new path for Quebecois talent into the French mainstream.
Co-written and directed by Nadège Loiseau (“A Bun in the Oven”), produced by Ayadi and Barral through their Srab Films banner in partnership with France 2 Cinema and Canada’s Possibles Media, and with France’s Le Pacte handling international sales, the upcoming feature “Three Times Nothing” shares much in common with traditional Gallic fare as it plucks a popular comedic star into a socially-minded story about three homeless men and a winning lottery ticket.

In what felt like a statement against criticisms of the embittered French film academy, controversy magnet Roman Polanski won the Best Director prize at the 2020 César Awards in Paris on Friday for his Dreyfus Affair drama “An Officer and a Spy.” He beat out fellow nominees including Ladj Ly, whose “Les Misérables” ultimately won Best Film, and Céline Sciamma, whose wildly acclaimed “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” went home with just one award, for Best Cinematography. Polanski’s win did not sit well with “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” star Adèle Haenel, who could be seen in the telecast walking out of the ceremony at the Salle Pleyel when the award was announced. Watch below.
Haenel has been an active voice in the #MeToo movement which, as she outlined in a recent New York Times interview, she believes has failed in France. That claim appeared to resonate at...

The veteran director had decided earlier in the week to shun the occasion because of the protests.

Updated, writethru: Ladj Ly’s Cannes Film Festival Jury Prize laureate Les Misérables was the big winner at Friday night’s 45th annual César Awards, France’s equivalent to the Oscars, including taking the top honor of Best Film. The night unfolded, however, under tumultuous conditions owing to controversy surrounding Roman Polanski, whose An Officer and a Spy was the leading nominee going in with 12 mentions.
The filmmaker was not in attendance, but his film won three prizes including Best Director — an occurrence that caused walkouts from the Salle Pleyel, which earlier in the evening had been the site of protests by feminist organizations.

Polanski on Thursday said he would not attend the local industry’s biggest night. “Activists are threatening me with a public lynching. Some have called for demonstrations, others are planning to make it a platform,” he said. “This...

The stormiest and most beleaguered Cesar Awards ever took place in Paris on Friday, with “Les Miserables” being named 2019’s best French film while protesters lined the streets outside the Salle Pleyel protesting the nominations for Roman Polanski’s “J’accuse,” which is known as “An Officer and a Spy” outside France.
Despite the furor, Polanski won two Cesar awards, one for best director and another for adapted screenplay, which he shared with his co-writer Robert Harris. His film also won for its costumes.
It was Polanski’s fifth Cesar in the directing category, the most of any director. His previous awards were for “Tess,” “The Pianist,” “The Ghost Writer” and “Venus in Fur.”
Despite all the attention on Polanski, the Oscar-nominated “Les Miserables” was the big winner of the night, taking home four awards. In addition to the best-film prize, director Ladj Ly’s taut drama also won for most...

As a contentious edition of France’s Cesar awards wrapped, Roman Polanski won best director prompting numerous walkouts such as nominee Adele Haenel, star of “Portrait of a Lady on Fire.”
Ladj Ly’s “Les Miserables” won best picture as well as the people’s choice prize, best male newcomer (for Alexis Manenti) and best editing.
Neither Polanski nor the cast and crew of “An Officer And A Spy” (“J’accuse”) was on hand at the awards ceremony hosted at the Salle Pleyel in Paris on Friday. Polanski said on Thursday that he would skip the celebration to avoid being “lynched,” but that didn’t prevent a protest by more than 100 people that was staged in front the venue by the advocacy group Osez le Feminisme.

Les Cahiers du Cinema, the iconic publication that was a driving force behind the French New Wave, is weathering an unprecedented crisis following the resignation of the majority of its staff on Thursday.
Some of its journalists, however, have decided to remain on board while they await the appointment of a new editor-in-chief.
Among the seasoned candidates rumored to be in the running to take over as editor-in-chief are film critic-director Marcos Uzal; film and theater critic and historian Antoine de Baecque; Charles Tesson, the current artistic director of Cannes Critics Week, who previously held the position at Les Cahiers du Cinema from 1998 to 2003; and Jean-Marc Lalanne, a film critic who runs the culture magazine Les Inrocks.

While the Cannes Film Festival is basking in the glory of having world premiered Bong Joon-Ho’s Oscar-winning “Parasite,” along with many other Oscar contenders, the fate of its presidency is up in the air.
Pierre Lescure, who took over from Gilles Jacob in 2015 as Cannes president, and is running for a third term, was perceived as a shoe-in for reelection considering his solid track record at the helm of the fest, alongside artistic director Thierry Fremaux. But rumors have been swirling in France about another candidate, Mercedes Erra, a top-ranking advertising executive, who is being pushed by the French government, according to the local magazine Paris Match.
Erra, who runs the Havas-owned French advertising agency Betc, is foreign to the world of cinema. However, she may be considered for this position by the culture minister as she’s a prominent advocate for diversity and gender parity, and the government...

Filmmaker Autumn de Wilde is serving up a fresh new take on the Jane Austen novel with the film Emma., which opens in theaters this weekend. Complete with a stylized punctuated period in the title, the new version is a Focus Features co-production with Working Title and Blueprint Productions and joins the ranks of other Hollywood iterations of the classic story. This includes the 1996 iteration starring Gwyneth Paltrow, a modern Indian version titled Aisha in 2010 and, of course, Amy Heckerling’s way existential adaptation Clueless starring Alicia Silverstone. There were also countless TV versions including the 1996 ITV film, starring Kate Beckinsale in the titular role as well as the 2009 four-part BBC miniseries starring Romola Garai. That being said, it seems like the world can’t get enough of this Austen’s comedy of “love and all its surprises”, but based on the trailer alone, de Wilde’s cracks open a...

Charades has scooped up international sales rights to “Shorta,” the buzzed-about Danish project that was presented at Les Arcs’s work-in-progress and Goteborg’s Nordic Film Market.
“Shorta,” directed by Frederik Louis Hviid and Anders Ølholm, unfolds in the aftermath of the killing of 19-year-old Talib Ben Hassi while in custody. The film follows two police officers, Jens and Mike, who are on routine patrol in a minority-heavy neighborhood when news of Talib’s death breaks, igniting a violent riot. Suddenly, the two officers find themselves trapped and must fight to find a way out.
The action-packed thriller, which deals with racism and police brutality in Denmark, has been compared by industry participants at both Les Arcs and Goteborg as similar to Ladj Ly’s Oscar-nominated “Les Miserables.” The film is produced by Toolbox Film (“The Hunt”) and could potentially make its world premiere at Cannes. “Shorta” will be distributed...

A little partying never killed anybody, right?
Well, it turns out that if you're under a spell that makes you party for days, death might just fall into your lap.
Marie Antoinette, who was strangely played by Courtney Ford with no explanation of why she looked like Nora, was the latest Encore on DC's Legends of Tomorrow Season 5 Episode 4, who liked to kill her enemies by partying them to death.
However, Marie was not the star of the hour as tensions between some of the Legends boiled over.
For reasons unknown, Sara returned to Star City to take care of some things and left Ava in charge of the Waverider.
It's hard to understand why no one was curious as to why Sara left, but hopefully, there will be a good explanation for it on the upcoming episodes.
Ava seemed to be the obvious choice for interim captain, but...

If you were paying attention to this year’s Oscars’ and its renamed Best International Film section — a category that could’ve easily been redubbed “Parasite, and Four Other Films Which Aren’t Parasite” — you might have spotted an outlier in the lineup. There was Bong Joon Ho’s juggernaut of a movie; a late-career masterpiece from Spanish maestro Pedro Almodóvar (Pain and Glory); an Amazon-sponsored French policier (Les Misérables); a poetic documentary on the lost art of rural beekeeping (Honeyland). And then there was some Polish film with a Latin name,...

Tom Hooper’s Cats has been in cinemas for just eight weeks now, but in that time, the Universal musical has developed a reputation as a new cult classic for bad movie aficionados. Across various social media platforms, filmgoers have shared stories and videos of raucous screenings attended by ironic-minded audience members captivated by the film’s bizarre and nightmarish spectacle.
It may therefore come as a disappointment to some of you to hear that Universal is already pulling the movie from theaters, though the film’s dismal box office figures more than justify this early withdrawal. On an estimated budget of $95 million, Cats has grossed a reported total of just $72.1 million, including $27.2 million domestically.
To compare these numbers with the gross of another December musical, 2012’s Les Misérables – also directed by Hooper – managed $441 million worldwide on a budget of $61 million. More recently, Michael Gracey’s 2017 film The Greatest Showman...

Laura Dern not only closed out the 2010s as the decade’s final Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner, for “Marriage Story,” but she continued a trend in the category: She’s the fourth consecutive champ who had also recently won an Emmy.
The star took home the Best Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actress Emmy in 2017 for “Big Little Lies,” one of the show’s eight victories that year. Who did she beat to win that? Her Oscar category predecessor Regina King (2018’s “If Beale Street Could Talk”), who was up for “American Crime” for the third straight year. Don’t feel too bad for King, though, since she had already nabbed two consecutive Emmys in that category for the belated ABC anthology series. King then returned the favor in September 2018 — five months before her Oscar win — beating Dern (“The Tale”) for the lead limited series/TV actress Emmy with “Seven Seconds.

Almost from the moment the trailer for “Cats” premiered it looked like it might be destined for the Razzies and not the Oscars despite its strong pedigree. That turned out to be true as the film is nominated nine times including Worst Picture. If Tom Hooper ends up claiming Worst Director for it, he’ll be only the third filmmaker ever to achieve an unfortunate feat: winning both an Oscar and a Razzie for directing.
SEERazzies: Every Worst Picture Winner 1981 to Today
The first was Michael Cimino, who won Best Director and Best Picture for the classic film “The Deer Hunter” (1978), but then made the notorious western flop “Heaven’s Gate” (1981), which won him Worst Director, though the film mercifully lost Worst Picture to “Mommie Dearest.” After that Cimino earned two more Razzie nominations for writing and directing “Year of the Dragon” (1985), but he didn’t win.

The biggest shocker at Sunday’s Oscars came in a category where few thought there would be one: Best Director. Sam Mendes appeared to have that on lock after claiming the corresponding prizes at the Golden Globes, Directors Guild of America Awards and the BAFTAs for “1917.” “Parasite” winning Best Picture over “1917” had better odds in our predictions than Bong Joon Ho did of beating Mendes. So how did Bong pull it off?
1. The passion is real and spectacular
Last week, I argued that “Parasite” would win Best Picture because it was the “Fleabag” of the Oscars, aka there was and is tremendous passion for it. In hindsight, I should’ve taken the analogy further because Bong is the Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Mendes is the Julia Louis-Dreyfus here. Just like with “Parasite” and Best Picture, “Fleabag” had better odds of winning the Best Comedy Series Emmy than Pwb did...

After roaring into the 2020 Oscar show with a company record of 24 nominations, Netflix wound up walking away tonight with only two wins: Laura Dern with Best Supporting Actress for Marriage Story and Best Feature Documentary American Factory.
Call it a bad case of deja vu: Netflix charged into this year’s Golden Globes with a massive 34 nominations (a combo of film and TV noms), and walked away from the night with a Best Supporting Actress win for Dern, and a Best Actress TV drama win for The Crown‘s Olivia Coleman. If you were to take bets in the Globes press room that night, there was a straw poll consensus that best drama was The Irishman‘s to lose, and lose it did. That projection was fueled by Irishman‘s Best Picture wins at the National Board of Review and the New York Film Critics Circle.

In a stunning upset, Bong Joon Ho’s black comedy “Parasite” almost swept the 92nd Academy Awards on Sunday night, making history along the way.
“Parasite” became the first foreign-language film to win best picture. Its victories in the international feature film, director and original screenplay categories were also a first for a South Korean movie. The film only lost in two categories: film editing and production design. Taika Waititi nabbed adapted screenplay for “Jojo Rabbit.”
“Parasite” beat out Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story,” Todd Phillips’ “Joker” — which had led nominations with 11 — Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Sam Mendes’ “1917,” James Mangold’s “Ford v Ferrari,” Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit” and Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” for the top prize.

The winners of the 92nd Academy Awards have beeb announced, ending the 2019-20 awards season that saw “Parasite” make history as the first South Korean movie to break into the Oscar race and win several Academy Awards. “Joker” was the year’s most nominated film at the 2020 Oscars, followed closely by “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” “The Irishman,” and “1917” with 10 nominations each. “Joker” took home Oscars for Best Actor (Joaquin Phoenix) and Best Original Score. “The Irishman” was completely shut out, while “Hollywood” took two prizes (Best Supporting Actor and Best Production Design) and “1917” won Tkt. “Parasite” competed in six categories and won Oscars for Best International Feature Film, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Director. The Bong Hive has greatly expanded. The 2020 Academy Awards have now concluded, with Parasite winning Best Picture, making history as the first foreign-language film to win the award, while Bong Joon Ho also earned Best Director.
On the acting side, the expected winners all took home statues, while Parasite and Jojo Rabbit picked up screenplay awards. Parasite also earned Best International Film and American Factory grabbed Best Documentary.
Unfortunately, The Irishman went home empty-handed though the love for Martin Scorsese was felt throughout the night, particularly in Bong Joon Ho’s Best Director speech, which can be seen below.

Updated with video: After making history earlier this evening as the first South Korean movie ever to win an Oscar with its Original Screenplay triumph, Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite has scooped the Best International Feature Film Academy Award. The prize, in what was previously known as the Foreign Language Oscar category, comes as no surprise given the trajectory Bong and Parasite have been on since taking the Palme d’Or in Cannes last May (also a first for a Korean pic).
Black comedy thriller Parasite and its director have been major darlings for awards bodies, guilds and festivals over the past several months. Upon the International Feature Oscar win tonight, Bong received a standing ovation. He has also helped raise the profile of a robust Korean industry that boasts talented filmmakers and astute audiences. In Korea, where it’s currently about midday on Monday, Parasite is trending atop Twitter.

Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” won the best international film prize at the 92nd Annual Academy Awards on Sunday night, making history as the first South Korean film to do so.
The thriller was nominated for six Academy Awards, including best picture, and was already the first South Korean feature to be nominated for best international film. “Parasite” made history earlier in the night when it won the best original screenplay Oscar — becoming not only the first South Korean film to win an Oscar, but marking a relatively rare win for a foreign-language screenplay. Bong Joon Ho wrote the script with Jin Won Han.
“I’m so happy to be its first recipient under the new name,” Bong said about the renamed category, previously titled best foreign-language film. “I applaud and support the new direction that this change symbolizes. All our loving crew members and cast members are here with us.

If there was ever a lock at this year’s Oscars, it was likely the fact that Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite” was going to win the Best International Feature at the awards ceremony. But then it didn’t happen…kidding. It definitely happened.
As almost everyone expected, Director Bong secured an Oscar win for his latest film “Parasite,” besting his category contemporaries, including “Corpus Christi,” “Honeyland,” “Les Misérables,” and “Pain and Glory.” If there was any chance that an upset might occur, it would have been for Pedro Almodovar’s “Pain and Glory.” That film received incredible acclaim, and at least around these parts, has fans that feel that it’s a better film than “Parasite.” Alas, tonight was all about Bong’s film.

Palme d’Or-winning satire directed by Bong Joon-ho wins the Academy award for the best film not in the English language
South Korean satire Parasite has won the best international film Oscar at the 92nd Academy Awards, the first Korean film to do so. It was the hot favourite for the award, but had to defeat contenders including Pedro Almodóvar’s mid-life memoir Pain & Glory, and French social comment drama Les Misérables.
Directed by Bong Joon-ho, Parasite is a comedy-thriller about a hard-up family who infiltrate the lives of a much richer one. It followed Bong’s two successful forays into (mostly) English-language film-making: Snowpiercer and Okja.
