Chicago – Natalie Portman gets betrayed by a seriously flawed screenplay in the melodrama “The Other Woman,” formerly called and based on a book called “Love and Other Impossible Pursuits.” After playing film festivals in 2009, the Don Roos’ film is finally getting a Blu-ray and DVD release to capitalize on Portman’s fame from winning the Oscar for “Black Swan.” Despite typically-strong work by the multi-talented star, the movie’s a tonal mess with an inconsistent screenplay that the strong central performance cannot save.
Blu-Ray Rating: 1.5/5.0
Working back and forth in a deeply-mistaken screenplay structure of flashbacks that only serve to keep the audience from getting to know the characters, “The Other Woman” centers on the life of Emilia Greenleaf. The original title seemed far more appropriate as it doesn’t carry nearly as much stigma as the new one, which places a certain degree of blame on our title character...

Check out this clip from The Other Woman, featuring a dinner between Jack (Scott Cohen) and Emilia (Natalie Portman).
About The Other Woman:
The radiant Natalie Portman (Closer, Black Swan) lights up the screen in this frank, funny, and heart-wrenching adaptation of bestselling author Ayelet Waldman’s novel about life, loss, and family directed by Don Roos (The Opposite Of Sex, Happy Endings). Emilia (Portman) is a Harvard law school graduate and a newlywed, having just married Jack (Scott Cohen, The Understudy), a high-powered New York lawyer, who was her boss – and married – when she began working at his law firm. Unfortunately, her life takes an unexpected turn when Jack and Emilia lose their newborn daughter. Emilia struggles through her grief to connect with her new stepson William (Charlie Tahan, I Am Legend), but is finding it hard to connect with this precocious child. Perhaps the most difficult obstacle...

Cashing on the success of Black Swan, IFC Films is planning a release of The Other Woman next month. Natalie Portman stars in the drama originally titled Love and Impossible Pursuits, based off Ayelet Waldman‘s novel. Directed and adapted by Don Roos (Bounce, Happy Endings) and co-starring Lisa Kudrow, Daisy Tahan, and Lauren Ambrose, the film premiered at Toronto International Film Festival back in 2009. We have the first trailer below via Yahoo and poster via Vulture.
It all has a very been-there-done-that vibe, and with better-looking films like Rabbit Hole covering similar territory, this doesn’t exactly grab me. I did get a chance to see an early screening of Natalie Portman’s other January release, No Strings Attached, and for a romantic-comedy it isn’t half-bad. At least we have that, Thor, and Your Highness to look forward to in Portman’s 2011 filmography.

There's all sorts of Natalie Portman gossip news today. She's engaged! She's pregnant! But let's leave the details of that stuff to others, and focus on her work. With some of her best acting yet currently being seen in Black Swan, there may be more interest in Portman than ever -- hence her appearance on a couple dozen casting shortlists over the past three months. In 2011 she's got Your Highness, Thor and No Strings Attached set for release. But before those three will be The Other Woman, formerly called Love and Other Impossible Pursuits. The film hits On Demand on January 1 and theaters February 4. The new poster is after the break. Don Roos (The Opposite of Sex) directs Scott Cohen and Lisa Kudrow alongside Natalie Portman, in an adaptation of the novel by Ayelet Waldman. The film didn't do all that well at Tiff last year, and has already seen...

While Carl Davis is best known through his work on British television (Pride and Prejudice) and re-scoring silent films (Napoleon, Intolerance), his last year featured a unique collaboration as he wrote music for the film of her daughter, Hannah Davis. The music for The Understudy won an award at Avignon Film Festival and the picture collected several other awards as well. I've had the chance to listen to this score for quite some time and now with the arrival of a new CD, it's time you got acuainted with the music as well. Instead of going for the obvious choice and aiming my questions at the composer, I decided to ask Hannah about her experiences of working with her father during The Understudy.
Before we talk about the music, could you tell me what was the inspiration to do this picture?
David, my husband, was an understudy twice on London's famous west end.
