Queen Chrysalis: [confronting Twilight] You know what's stronger than friendship, Twilight? Fear!
Twilight Sparkle: Aah!
[her shield disintegrates]
Lord Tirek: [while pulling her toward him] 'Cause when you have to protect yourself, you don't have time for anypony else.
Cozy Glow: Too bad you never taught that in school.
[the three villains power up their magic, preparing to blast Twilight. Before they can, a large boulder smacks into them, freeing Twilight. Twilight looks up to see that Rarity had levitated the boulder]

Nearing the end
Had seen a lot of like and dislike for the "The Ending of the End" two parter before watching it. Many loved the visuals, the action and most of the characterisation. A lot of criticism though was directed at the writing for a couple of the characters and for especially the twist. Seeing both parts of "The Ending of the End" for myself, my overall impressions were good to very good but not the great two parter it could easily have been, considering how good the concept was.
Of the two parts, the better one was the second as most of the problems the two parter had was in Part 1, and we are not talking about slightly sadly. The problems were actually not many in my view but they were significant and quite infuriating. That is not to say that "The Ending of the End Part 1" is not good, it absolutely is and actually was liking it a lot on the whole until we came to the part that became notoriously "the elephant in the room" of the two parter.
Am going to start with the good. The animation is some of the best of the season, which is quite a compliment as this was something that was particularly consistently good throughout the season. It is full of vibrant colour and atmosphere and the background detail is often awe-inspiring. The music is so good at adding to and enhancing the action and atmosphere. The voice acting is faultless all round.
Loved most of the characters, with all the regulars true to character, fun and likeable and Tirek and especially Chrysalis (in Season 9 she was the memorable intimidating villain that she should have been in Season 8's "The Mean 6") being formidable villains. The action often thrills in energy and scope and is creative in visuals. The script has humour, intelligence and poignancy and the story is fun and suspenseful on the most part.
There were two characters that underwhelmed though. One was Discord, love him as a character on the whole but here he was just dumb and it was like the writers had forgotten what made him so great a character in the first place and had ignored his growth. Even worse is Cozy Glow, liked her in Season 8 but she was a major missed opportunity in Season 9. She is not menacing in the slightest and is too much of a brat, with no motivation or goal given. It was like she was bad for the sake of being bad.
What undid "The Ending of the End Part 1" was the truly idiotic twist that was confusing and a real insult to the intelligence. Just didn't buy it for a second and found the placement of it too abrupt.
Concluding, a lot impresses but a few things frustrate. 7/10.
