Season Two Review
Despite its dull start, season one of "Krypton" eventually won me over enough to encourage me back for this second run. Season two has more of the elements I liked from that first run but it's still weighed down by far too much disinteresting domestic politics to make the grade and the cancellation is probably just about right.
General Zod (Colin Salmon) has ascended to the throne of Krypton and schemes to conquer other worlds, he plans to bring Doomsday to heel to get this done. Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe) is trapped in the phantom zone though with Braniac (Blake Ritson) and though they both escape, the bounty hunter Lobo (Emmett Scanlan) is tracking Brainiac with a personal vendetta.
It's hard to really nail what's wrong with Krypton. It should work, it's fairly similar to "Gotham" in set up when you think about it. Superman's grandfather against three (or perhaps 4 If you count Lobo) of his greatest villains, so why doesn't it. It's not performances, those are usually acceptable. It's not the effects as those too are pretty solid (for TV anyway). It's that the plot circles and circles around the same points over and over, without getting anywhere - which given that there's only 20 episodes in total is criminal.
Aside from the plot problems, I still don't believe in this world, in how it works. In where the food comes from, in where people live - it doesn't feel genuine to me. Only having four sets doesn't help and at least 50% of this second season takes place in random caves on a moon that Zod can't attack for various contrived reasons. Also, the series is really consequence free. There's quite a shocking death in this second season . . . until its reset three episodes later and that's not the first time the show has brought a "dead" character back. I did like Lobo and I think he could benefit from a Constantine like jump to "Legends of Tomorrow" for a short run and the Darkseid tease at the end was nice, but ultimately I don't feel too bad that this is the end and I'm not obliged to sit through any more.
