Megan Hilty has broken her silence on the tragedy of her sister’s death, who was pregnant at the time, as well as the loss of her brother-in-law and young nephew. The “Smash” star’s family was killed in a sea plane crash off the coast of Washington state on Sunday.
On Wednesday evening, Hilty took to Instagram to recount the tragic accident and share her immense grief. She wrote, “On Sunday afternoon, a small float plane crashed into Puget Sound off the coast of Whidbey Island. My beloved sister Lauren, brother-in-law Ross and baby nephew Remy were on that plane. To make this news even more devastating, my sister was eight months pregnant and we were expecting to welcome baby boy Luca into the world next month.”
She continued, writing, “The last three days have been the worst of our lives. There are truly no words to appropriately convey the depth of our grief.

Exclusive Jane Krakowski has stepped down from the role of Lily St. Regis in NBC’s upcoming Annie Live! after being diagnosed with a breakthrough case of Covid, the network said Friday. Smash star Megan Hilty will step into the role.
“I am beyond thrilled to join this all-star cast, crew and creative team,” said Hilty in a statement. “My family and I have been super fans of Annie for as long as I can remember, and we always look forward to the epic televised musicals produced by Bob Greenblatt & Neil Meron, so to be a part of this particular production is an honor and a dream come true. “Black Mirror” is the three-time reigning champion in Best TV Movie, an Emmy race ostensibly for one-off productions. The dystopian satire was expected to contend to extend its record, which it set when it won for the second time, but its victories were so controversial that the academy amended eligibility requirements. Movies (and episodes entering as movies) now must have a minimum 75-minute runtime to qualify for Best TV Movie. This disqualified all episodes from the fifth (and probably final) season of “Black Mirror,” which had already been produced when the academy announced the change.
SEEour slugfest with initial reactions to the nominations.
Despite the rule seemingly being introduced only to force “Black Mirror” out of Best TV Movie, Netflix lobbied the academy for an exception, which they inexplicably granted. Rival networks complained and the academy caved again. They reversed the reversal, opting to play by their own new rules...

Dahvi Waller says she felt like she was rolling a massive boulder up a hill when she started her research for the FX on Hulu limited series “Mrs. America.”
She had to figure out how she was going to tell the politically, racially and socially complex story of the Equal Rights Amendment and the women who fought both for and against it — over almost a decade.
And Waller was far from the only writer who had to contend with this problem, as a large chunk of the season’s biggest limited series and TV movies, including Showtime’s “The Loudest Voice,” Netflix’s “Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker” and Lifetime’s “Patsy & Loretta,” set their stories over lengthy time frames and involved many real-life figures.

A few weeks ago, I wrote about how the major Emmy categories should consider expanding their nominations to 10, given the sheer number of viable contenders in this age of peak TV. Indeed, that’s true for the comedy, drama, limited series and competition races, in which there will absolutely be a ton of snubs when the noms are announced on July 28. And then there’s the TV movie category.
This is a field with surprisingly few major contenders — and many of the frontrunners are actually extensions of long-running TV shows: Netflix’s “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie,” Amazon Prime Video’s “Transparent Musicale Finale” and Netflix’s “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend.”
The TV movie race also underwent a shakeup this year after the Television Academy first agreed to waive a rule requiring entrants to be at least 75 minutes long, in order to allow “Black Mirror: Smithereens” to compete.

“Black Mirror’s” loss could be HBO’s gain. After three straight Best TV Movie Emmy victories for various episodes and not meeting the new 75-minute runtime requirement, “Black Mirror” is forced to compete in drama this year, paving the way for HBO to claim its record-extending 22 win in the category with “Bad Education.”
It may be hard to remember after the “Black Mirror’s” three-peat, which followed “Sherlock’s” victory in 2016 for its special episode “The Abominable Bride,” but the Best TV Movie category used to be HBO’s domain. The network started off with a bang in 1993, triumphing in a tie for its films “Barbarians at the Gate” and “Stalin,” and then ran the table for the rest of the decade.
Since 2000, HBO has racked up 13 wins; besides the last four years, its other 21st-century losses occurred in 2000 (ABC’s “Tuesdays with Morrie” won), 2003 (TNT’s “Door to Door...

The Television Academy is putting a halt to Emmy For Your Consideration events as concerns continue to grow over the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
The Academy had already offered networks and studios the option of throwing Fyc events without a live audience/membership attendance, but in the immediate future that will now be the only option. The decision to stop in-person events is effective through the end of Fyc season — June 14, 2020. The ruling likely puts a halt to pop-up event spaces like Netflix’s “FYSee” installation and Amazon Prime Video’s usual event space at the Hollywood Athletic Club as well.
“Should the virus be contained, we will contemplate a truncated Fyc event season with an audience in hopes that we can accommodate partners impacted by early cancellations,” the org said in an email to networks and studios. “Those potential plans will be rolled out as we are able to confirm next steps.

Exclusive: The Nashville trio of creator-executive producer Callie Khouri, producer Michael Lohmann and Season 1 executive music producer T Bone Burnett are reuniting for another music-driven drama series.
Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment has acquired the rights to Jake Brennan’s music and true-crime podcast Disgraceland for a TV series written by Khouri, Lohmann and Brennan, with Burnett overseeing the music.
Disgraceland, which will be taken to the premium cable and streaming marketplace shortly, is a music and true-crime television show about musicians getting away with murder and behaving very badly.
It stems from an original idea by Lohmann based on the podcast. He reached out to his former Nashville colleagues, the husband-and-wife duo of Oscar winners Khouri and Burnett, and took the project to Kapital Entertainment, where he serves as head of production.
Launched independently in 2018, the Disgraceland podcast, created and hosted by Brennan, quickly went to No. 7 on the Apple Podcast chart.

Women supporting women was the main topic of conversation Wednesday night at the Tennessee premiere of Lifetime’s new film, “Patsy & Loretta,” held south of Nashville at the Franklin Theater. Starring Megan Hilty (“Smash”) as Patsy Cline and Jessie Mueller (Tony-nominated for “Waitress” and a winner for “Beautiful”) as Loretta Lynn — pictured above, with their wax counterparts — the film shines a spotlight on the friendship that formed between them before Cline’s untimely death in a plane crash in 1963.

To say we’re big fans of these women is an understatement. We grew up watching Coal Miners Daughter (Academy Award for Best Actress Sissy Spacek – who did her own singing) in 1980, followed by Sweet Dreams in 1985 starring Jessica Lange as Patsy Cline.
Spacek’s co-star Beverly D’Angelo, who played Patsy Cline, also did her own singing rather than lip-synching; she was nominated for a Golden Globe as was Tommy Lee Jones.
Now comes Lifetime’s Patsy & Loretta.
The official Loretta Lynn Facebook page debuted this first poster from the upcoming film.
The movie will star Megan Hilty as music legend Patsy Cline and Grammy winner Jessie Mueller as country icon Loretta Lynn.
The movie, produced by Sony Pictures Television, is executive produced by Neil Meron, in his first solo project since the passing of longtime producing partner Craig Zadan.
Debuting later this year, the movie was filmed on location in Nashville,...
