Arriving in cinemas on December 2nd in the UK is the latest film from Walt Disney Animation Studios, Moana. We are rather excited about it.
It's from the directing team behind The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules and more, Ron Clements and John Musker. And it comes off the back of an incredible run of Disney animated features, up to and including this year's Zootropolis.
Here's the outline of just what Moana is about:
For centuries, the greatest sailors in the world masterfully navigated the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, 3,000 years ago, their voyages stopped for a millennium – and no one knows exactly why.

Disney’s “Moana” (opening November 23rd) boasts several animation breakthroughs: It will be the first major movie ever translated into Tahitian; the teenage heroine (voiced by Hawaiian newcomer Auli’i Cravalho) has no love interest; and, it’s the first CG feature directed by Disney hand-drawn vets John Musker and Ron Clements (“The Princess and the Frog,” “Aladdin,” “The Little Mermaid”).
“Moana” also marks the feature producing debut of Osnat Shurer, who was in charge of the shorts program at Pixar (“Lifted,” “One Man Band,” “Boundin'”), and later jumped to Disney to head development before getting the promotion. However, Musker said her pre-Pixar experience was just as valuable; before she joined the animation house in 2002, she’d served as an independent documentary producer with shoots in India, Tibet, China, Japan, Israel, and Turkey.

After a few shorter previews, the first full-length trailer has arrived for Disney Animation’s Dwayne Johnson-led Moana, which tells the adventurous journey of Moana (newcomer Auli’i Cravalho) and her muscular demi-god companion Maui (Johnson) as they sail the seas. Johnson has been very vocal about the film, promising a wonderful and touching experience for the entire family. The project is in the hands of long-time Disney Animation collaborators John Musker and Ron Clements, who are both directing Moana, and have previously helmed the likes of The Little Mermaid and Aladdin.
Johnson has solid comedic timing, and he seems to work nicely in tandem with rookie Cravalho, who just very well may steal the show. Cravalho was only 14 when she started work on Moana, and was cast while still a freshman in high school to voice the titular hero. See the full trailer, which also features original music...

After a quick tease last week, Disney has released the new TV spot for the studio's latest animated feature film, Moana, that debuted yesterday during the Rio Olympics. Aside from looking jaw-droppingly gorgeous (as many Walt Disney Animation films tend to), this movie just looks like a tremendous amount of fun, with Dwayne Johnson's larger-than-life demigod Maui goofing around and being kept on his toes by the adventurer Moana (newcomer Auli'i Cravalho) as they take to the open seas. Plus, we get a taste of new music for the movie partly created by Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda. Check it out below:

If you happened to be tuned into the Olympics last night, you saw a new extended TV spot for the Dwayne Johnson-led Moana, and now Disney Animation has released it online. Their newest venture after the colossal success of Zootopia follows the titular Moana (Auli’i Cravalho), who sails with her hero and companion, the demi-god Maui (Johnson) to a legendary island using her navigational skills. Dwayne looks to play the sweet, goofy, shape-shifting Maui well, hitting a nice counter-note to the brave, venturous Moana to make the perfect pairing.
It promises to be a touching, rousing adventure that should continue Disney Animation’s winning streak, especially in the hands of long-time Disney writer-directors Ron Clements and John Musker (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin). See the extended TV spot below, along with character photos, for the film that also stars Alan Tudyk, Jermaine Clement, and Nicole Scherzinger.

Disney's Moana is just a few shorts months away! Before the animated Hawaiian-themed film hits theaters, meet the rest of the characters that will help Moana and Maui in their quest!
We already know the Demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) who is half god, half mortal, all awesome! Although, we haven't yet had the pleasure of meeting the rest of the characters in the gorgeous story of Disney's Moana! Let's find out more about them!
Jemaine Clement (“The Bfg,” “Despicable Me,” “Rio,” “Rio 2,” “What We Do in the Shadows,” Flight of the Conchords) provides the voice of Tamatoa, a self-absorbed, 50-foot crab who lives in Lalotai, the realm of monsters. The conceited crustacean wants to be more than a “bottom feeder” and overcompensates for this perceived shortcoming by covering himself in all things shiny.

Following up thier monster hit Zootopia, Disney Animation is back this winter with Moana, directed by Ron Clements and John Musker (Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, The Princess and the Frog). As seen in the first trailer earlier this summer, it follows our title character (voiced by Auli’i Cravalho) who is guided by the demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) on an adventure in the South Pacific.
A second trailer has now arrived hailing from Japan and focusing solely on Baby Moana. It introduces some of the more magical touches as the Pacific Ocean becomes alive, fully interacting with the character. Also featuring a script co-written by Taika Waititi and music from Lin-Manuel Miranda, check out the new trailer and international posters below.

After a long, worldwide search for the voice of Moana, Disney has found it in a 14 year old newcomer! Read on for more details!
Frequent readers of Cinelinx will know that we often report that Disney has cast or hired an unknown talent to helm a rather large project. With their new Hawaiian hit, they've decided to dip back in the pool of obscurity and pluck out a fresh new talent to be the voice of their lead character. Playing Moana will be native Hawaiian Auli'i Cravalho, seen below.
Cravalho, only 14, was one of a small pool of young actresses brought back for the final auditions and according to the crew of Moana, she nailed it.
According to producer Osnat Shurer, “Her audition was fantastic – she was such a raw talent. Auli’i was among a small number of girls we brought back for a second round of auditions. Then...

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Moana has found her voice following a worldwide search to cast the film’s title character. Native Hawaiian newcomer Auli’i Cravalho, 14, joins Dwayne Johnson in the big-screen adventure about a spirited and fearless teenager named Moana (voice of Cravalho) who, with help from demi-god Maui (voice of Johnson), sets out on a daring mission to prove herself a master wayfinder.
While hundreds of talented people from across the Pacific Islands were eager to try out for the role, Cravalho set her sights firmly on her sophomore year of high school. “I didn’t think I would have a chance,” she said. “When I was little, I used to dance around the house singing at the top of my lungs. In my mind, that was performing and I loved the feeling of it. But I never imagined being in a Disney movie,...

You might not know who Gary Rydstrom is, but you've certainly heard him before. This is a man whose pioneering sound work has won him seven (!) Academy Awards and brought to life groundbreaking technological advancements like the first film presented in DTS sound ("Jurassic Park") and re-crafting sound mixes in 5.1 surround (after his breakthrough work on "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," he and James Cameron created a new multi-channel mix for the original "Terminator"). He's also directed a pair of Pixar short films ("Lifted" and "Hawaiian Vacation") and overseen the English language dubs of four Studio Ghibli movies ("Tales from Earthsea," "From Up on Poppy Hill," "Arrietty," and last year's Oscar-nominated masterpiece "The Wind Rises"). In short: he's kind of the coolest dude around.
And this weekend he adds another accomplishment to his already unfathomably long list, when his debut feature film "Strange Magic" debuts in theaters nationwide. This bizarre, George Lucas-produced animated fairy tale,...

There have been far better years for family entertainment, and for animated films, than 2014. Whilst there have been highlights - Paddington, The Wind Rises, How To Train Your Dragon 2, The Boxtrolls - the mix of material on offer hasn't particularly sparkled.

Just over a week ago, we were all surprised to learn of the existence of a new animated movie from Lucasfilm called Strange Magic that Disney was going to release through their Touchstone Pictures banner in January. Now the first trailer has arrived to show us why this film is getting a hasty, last minute promotional push and release. If "from the mind of George Lucas" isn't enough to turn you off in this day and age, the trailer should do it. This looks like a comedic version of Epic (which already wasn't a good animated movie) chock full of pop song covers. This just looks terrible and devoid of any charm. Watch? Here's the first trailer for Gary Rydstrom's Strange Magic, originally from Yahoo: Strange Magic is directed by Gary Rydstrom (of the Pixar shorts Toy Story Toons: Hawaiian Vacation and Lifted) from a screenplay he wrote with...

A year after the industry-rattling announcement that Walt Disney Pictures had acquired LucasFilm and planned on moving forward with hew "Star Wars" movies, there were vague reports that George Lucas and prequel trilogy sound mixer Gary Rydstrom were collaborating on an untitled animated film. Now, the joint companies have unearthed the long-gestating project on their own. "Strange Magic" will suddenly arrive in January 2015. For every animated movie that gets made, there are dozens more that never make it. Mark looks at some failed Disney projects...
In the age of the internet, Hollywood studios are much quicker to announce the projects they have in development than they used to be. Now that the demand is there, there's a huge turnover of movie-related news every day, and if you follow it in any significant way, there are probably a whole bunch of projects that you've heard about, maybe even gotten excited about, that never came to fruition.
Still, it's not only via the easier availability of such information that we know about projects that never came to be. At a studio like Disney, projects will get as far as being fully developed in animatic form before falling apart, and the artefacts left behind from such abridged projects have made for some fascinating reading.

Newt was originally slated to hit theaters in summer 2011, but was moved back to 2012 to make room for Cars 2. However, with both Brave and Monsters, Inc. 2 set for 2012, Newt mysteriously disappeared from the schedule.
Pixar’s unfinished work is about a blue-footed newt, a tiny little salamander, who finds the one remaining mate of his species.
Gary Rydstrom was set to direct the story, but similarities to the storyline in the animated film Rio might have led the head of Pixar, John Lasseter to put a stop to project.
Meanwhile, an illustrator/visual development artist named Katy Wu has recently posted her set of concept art for the project that would have inspired the feature.
Head inside to check it out.

Brave will be out in June so Disney is cranking up the publicity machine. Here are some concept sketches to give you more of an idea about the filme, featuring Pixar’s first heroine.
