Exclusive: Nearly two decades after producing The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, a video game documentary that’s emerged as a cult classic since its unveiling at the 2007 Slamdance Film Festival, Ed Cunningham has wrapped production on Arcades & Love Songs: The Ballad Of Walter Day, a follow-up film picking up with his documentary subject, known as the father of Esports.
Directed by Seth Gordon, The King of Kong offered a look into the world of competitive arcade gaming with a focus on the quest for the high score in the classic arcade game Donkey Kong. The specific focus of the film is the intense rivalry between two gamers: the reigning champion, restaurateur Billy Mitchell, and underdog challenger, Steve Wiebe. As Wiebe relentlessly pursues the Donkey Kong high score, he faces obstacles and skepticism from the gaming community, particularly from Mitchell and the organization Twin Galaxies, which oversees video game records.

Billy Mitchell, the notorious gamer who proved a perfect antagonist in the 2007 documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, is back at the top of the leaderboard after years of dispute that his Donkey Kong gaming may have been through emulators.
Twin Galaxies – the organization that officially bestows world records on gamers – has again confirmed that Billy Mitchell holds the following Donkey Kong records: 1,047,200 (the King of Kong Score), 1,050,200 (the Mortgage Brokers score) and 1,062,800 (the Boomers score). And while it’s not in the record books, we have yet to see another professional gamer with such a gorgeous head of hair.
Twin Galaxies launched their official investigation into the legitimacy of Billy Mitchell’s records back in 2018 after there was a dispute that his achievements “were not generated by unmodified original Donkey Kong arcade hardware as required by the leaderboard rules”, with some pointing to Mitchell’s video...

Slamdance has awarded its grand prize for screenwriting to writer Joyce Sherrí for her first feature screenplay for coming-of-age drama “Sweet Sixteen.”
The festival announced 13 prizes Thursday during a live-stream ceremony co-presented by Writers Guild of America West and hosted by Slamdance alum Todd Berger across feature film, horror/thriller, TV pilot and short film categories. Slamdance awarded more than $16,000 to winners across all categories.
“Sweet Sixteen” centers on Sweet, a 15-year-old girl who tries to convince her parents to throw her a big sweet 16 birthday party, but money and family problems lead her down a destructive path.
“Black people are not a monolith then neither are our experiences,” said Sherrí. “There is more to us than racial trauma. Sometimes we just want something as simple as a first kiss or a sweet sixteenth birthday party. I wrote ‘Sweet Sixteen’ because I want to share a story that explores a...

The big screen Transformers franchise earned over $4.8 billion at the box office, and yet you’d struggle to find anyone who speaks particularly highly about any of the movies, with the notable exception of the critically-acclaimed Bumblebee. Michael Bay’s time at the helm may have resulted in huge profits, but the fact that The Last Knight saw takings drop by over $500 million after two consecutive billion-dollar hits in Dark of the Moon and Age of Extinction made it pretty clear that the filmmaker had run the series into the ground.
The Autobots and Decepticons are currently on a live-action hiatus, but there are several projects still in the works, including a Beast Wars adaptation, a Bumblebee sequel and a reboot of the main timeline. Longtime fans looking for their Transformers fix as soon as possible though can now head to Netflix and check out the animated War for Cybertron – Siege.

Slamdance has awarded its grand prize for screenwriting to Jessica Sinyard for her television pilot “The Peak.”
The prize was presented Thursday night during a ceremony hosted by Writers Guild of America West at the WGA Theatre. About 3,000 submissions were received for this year’s contest, and more than $16,000 was awarded to 2018 winners across all categories.
“The Peak” is a psychological survival thriller that follows a team of eight overachievers in their attempt to climb Mount Everest. When a team member goes missing on the peak, paranoia and altitude sickness corrode the reliability of survivor accounts. With a dual narrative that interweaves both the team’s ascent and descent, “The Peak” explores the choices people make when they believe no one is watching.

Seth Gordon’s 2007 documentary, “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters,” received a bonus life this month thanks to the stripping of “antagonist” Billy Mitchell’s “Donkey Kong” world records by independent video game achievements organization Twin Galaxies.
Steve Wiebe, who was the “protagonist” in the documentary, told Variety that being back in the news after 11 years has been “surreal.” He had heard gamers questioning the authenticity of Mitchell’s scores for years both in person at Kong Off events and online through the “Donkey Kong” forum, although there was never anything concrete until James Young recently revealed video evidence. And with Twin Galaxies finding Mitchell had cheated, Wiebe finally beat Mitchell.
“The more I thought about it from the ‘King of Kong’ days, it all seemed to make sense now,” Wiebe said. “All the things that were happening at the time… like why he didn’t come out and play me,...

Recurring documentary subject and video-game legend Billy Mitchell was unanimously stripped of his record-breaking scores Thursday following allegations of cheating. Twin Galaxies, the premiere tracker of global gamers’ success, will also not recognize any of Mitchell’s future scores.
In 2010, Mitchell became the first “Donkey Kong” player to earn one million points; he started setting records in that game 28 years prior. Now 52, Mitchell also attained the first “Pac-Man” perfect score in 1999. His gaming prowess led to roles in “Chasing Ghosts: Beyond the Arcade” (2007), “The King of Arcades” (2014), and “Man Vs Snake: The Long and Twisted Tale of Nibbler” (2016).
But his most notable onscreen appearance came in future “Horrible Bosses” and “Baywatch” (2017) director Seth Gordon’s 2007 film, “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters.” A SXSW and Tribeca Film Festival selection, “The King of Kong” was about an upstart named Steve Wiebe who scheduled multiple public challenges against no-show Mitchell.

Famed high-score gamer Billy Mitchell, best known for his leading role in “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters” documentary, was officially stripped of his “Donkey Kong” and other video game high scores and banned from submitting scores to the world’s largest tracker of video game world records following a decision that he cheated, Twin Galaxies announced today.
“With this ruling, Twin Galaxies can no longer recognize Billy Mitchell as the first million point ‘Donkey Kong’ record holder,” the group wrote in its announcement. “According to our findings, Steve Wiebe would be the official 1st million point record holder.”
Variety has reached out to Mitchell and Wiebe for comment and Guinness to see if his record there will stand.

The allegation comes from Jeremy Young, the moderator of Donkey King Forum, who lays out his evidence in a lengthy two-part post. His argument boils down to the idea that Mitchell used an emulator, and not the actual “Donkey Kong” game, to generate his score; Young also claims that “all of this can be independently confirmed by anyone” and that he is “not in sole possession of any critical, secret piece of information here.”

I dreamed of being an arcade hero, cool under pressure, chewing Hubba Bubba, riding my last twenty pence coin, all the way to the final boss fight. A hushed gang of acne-ridden misfits by the video-game cabinet, eyes glued to the score, most willing me on, and more than a few a little envious of my epic run. Totally in the zone; mind and hands moving as one. In a blur of overly dextrous button tapping and skilful joystick manoeuvring: I best the boss, crack a billion points, and become a video-game legend. Glorious pixelated immortality! But sadly as a kid back in the early-90s that 8-bit starship had most definitely sailed…

The United States is “my country, right or wrong,” of course, and I consider myself a patriotic person, but I’ve never felt that patriotism meant blind fealty to the idea of America’s rightful dominance over global politics or culture, and certainly not to its alleged preferred status on God’s short list of favored nations, or that allegiance to said country was a license to justify or rationalize every instance of misguided, foolish, narrow-minded domestic or foreign policy.
In 2012, when this piece was first posted, it seemed like a good moment to throw the country’s history and contradictions into some sort of quick relief, and the most expedient way of doing that for me was to look at the way the United States (and the philosophies at its core) were reflected in the movies, and not just the ones which approached the country head-on as a subject.

Director Seth Gordon (Baywatch) has signed on to helm the drama Life in Rewind, a movie based on a book by the same title. It tells the story of a young man with Ocd and his struggles. Deadline describes the plot of the movie:
The movie is in the vein of Good Will Hunting and Silver Linings Playbook. After witnessing his mother’s death at an early age, Ed Zine developed one of the most severe Ocd cases on record, with a fear of death so profound that he refused to leave his basement for three years. He was helped back from the precipice by a maverick doctor from Harvard.
In addition to Baywatch, Gordon has directed “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters,” “Four Christmases,” and “Horrible Bosses.”
There's no casting announcements yet, or word on a release date.

Very little is known about the adaptation, save the fact that it will feature an original song from Twin Galaxies iconic scorekeeper Walter Day called ‘Museum of Your Heart’. I'm also sure, like the doc, it will explore the rivalry between Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell who were competing for the world record for Donkey Kong.
Of all the shows to appear on Broadway, I truly believe this is the first I would make the trip to NYC to go and see. When talking to IGN about the project, Gordon said:
“Yeah, some scripts have been written – we’re actually working on a musical right now, which is pretty great.

We’re still waiting on New Line’s remake of The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, Seth Gordon‘s excellent 2007 doc about Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell competing over the world record for Donkey Kong. Gordon, who went on to direct Horrible Bosses and Baywatch, has been wanting to dramatize their rivalry in a feature film for years now – […]

MaryAnn’s quick take… A beach-slap to anyone with a brain. Embodies everything that is wrong with Hollywood today. It is proudly dumb. It is proudly sexist. It is proudly pointless. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
These are the shoals upon which critics are broken. Those gently susurrating waves? The bastard power of water to wear everything down. Those lovely soft grains of sand on the beach? Every one of them a thoughtful film lover who has dedicated her- or himself to considering cinema, now ground down into a tiny tiny pebble.
Baywatch is a beach-slap fuck-you to anyone with a brain. Your gonads may be engaged if you are a heterosexual man (or a homosexual woman, though that will be accidental) who has not graduated from a tween sexuality in which disembodied boobs...

Director Seth Gordon may have been busy helming desultory slow-motion beach workouts in scattershot big-budget comedies, but that doesn’t mean he’s taken his eye off the further adventures of his directorial debut, The King Of Kong. For years, there’s been discussion of turning Gordon’s documentary about the competition for the Donkey Kong world championship into a narrative film, but now it seems Gordon is taking it another direction—specifically, to the stage. IGN reports the project is being turned into a musical, which means it’s time for you to finally realize your dreams of crafting a big Broadway number based on your devotion to the old arcade game. (Though, if you keep the references vague, you could probably convince people your torch song about Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest is actually a lament for the original.)

Welcome to another installment of Movies to Show My Son. This is the blog series were I discuss movies I can’t way to show my son in the future. I’ll be covering my own personal experience with the movie, movie and life lessons I hope he will learn, and lastly my concerns about showing said film. This week’s film is The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters.
Personal Memories:
With this movie being only ten years old I do not have the same type of personal attachment to it as something like The Sandlot. It was one of the first movies I remember watching on a streaming service before they completely took over. It was at a time when Netflix only gave you so many movies to stream a month (insane thinking about that now) and one of those months I chose to watch The King of Kong.

Amazon released five new pilots on Friday, and it’s up to viewers to determine which ones get picked up. “The Legend of Master Legend,” “Budding Prospects,” “The New V.I.P.’s,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Oasis” make up the 2017 Amazon pilot season. Some are good, some are bad, but the power lies with all of us to determine which are worthy of a full season order. Read our reviews below to get a little insight into each offering, and watch the episodes for yourself right here.
“The Legend of Master Legend”
John Hawkes can’t catch a break. When he nabbed the lead in Charlie Kaufman’s FX pilot — Charlie Kaufman — it didn’t get picked up. He landed an Oscar nomination for “The Sessions,” but his follow-ups have meant diddly-squat comparatively. Sure, he stole a few scenes in “Lincoln” and got to take part in Amy Schumer’s amazing sketch,...

The career of filmmaker Seth Gordon is a really curious and odd one. The director started out of the gate with one of the most beloved documentaries of the aughts with “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters.” He quickly attached himself to many promising projects and looked to be on his way to possible mirror a career like Jason Reitman’s or Paul Feig’s or even creating films like something out of Zach Braff’s “Garden State” (which is nowhere as bad as some snobs claim it is).

Elevator Pitch:
“Tina and The Gucci Flip Flop” follows a woman named Tina, who finds herself trapped in the closet when her lover’s lover comes home. It’s a tale of betrayal, cheating, sexuality, closet hiding, and big, wet farts. It’s based on the twitter story of the same name, that sent me from 8,000 followers, to 25,000 overnight on twitter, helped me become verified, win Project Greenlight, and ultimately, become a fellow of the Sundance Labs.

Movies based on videogames tend to be awful. But documentaries about games? They're sometimes brilliant...
Hollywood has always has an awkward relationship with videogames. Studios are scared of them because they’re a threat, and something else for teenagers to spend money on instead of big summer movies. But on the other hand, there’s a lot of money in games, and Hollywood wants some of that — but they’ve never properly worked out how. Ever since 1993’s Super Mario Bros, there has been a steady stream of movies based on videogame properties, and their guaranteed awfulness has become a running joke. And while that’s slightly unfair on a few films (Raul Julia totally makes Street Fighter worthwhile), it’s not without reason.
And even when they’re not based on an actual title, attempts to make movies more broadly also tend to be terrible. The Last Starfighter,...

Gleason follows the life of ex-nfl football player Steve Gleason and his battle with Als through video journals and, later, camera footage. Gleason is the star here as his honesty is what draws one in. He has been described as a warrior poet and that description definitely applies. His travels with his wife are sure to pull at the emotional strings, but the film also feels honest in its intent and drive. That is largely due to Gleason and the people around him, but also to director Clay Tweel. It was a great pleasure to talk with Tweel as I asked him about the practicalities of financing a film like this, how involved Gleason and his wife were, and what his goal was in the making of this documentary. Enjoy the full conversation below.

Clay Tweel has been involved in some of the most entertaining documentaries in recent years including his producing role in The King of Kong, right up through his directing turn on both Print the Legend and last year's brilliantly witty Finders Keepers. Tweel's latest documentary Gleason is a shift away from the light-hearted tone of those previous films and into much more somber and emotional territory. This change in no way makes the film less effective as the result is one of the most impactful and emotionally affecting documentaries in recent memory. The titular Steve Gleason is probably best known as a special teams player for NFL team the New Orleans Saints. Though not a star player, Gleason was responsible for a key punt-block that...

"I don't like to brag, but... I don't think there's a player in the world that could've beat me." FilmBuff has debuted a trailer for a documentary called Man vs Snake: The Long and Twisted Tale of Nibbler, featuring some funky animation to tell the story of arcade gamer and high score record holder Tim McVey. Following in the footsteps of other arcade game docs like The King of Kong and Chasing Ghosts, this is less about the actual game of Nibbler (also known as Snake) and more about the gamer who was/is obsessed with setting (and maintaining) the highest score. I love that this apparently has its own theme song ("Man versus Snake!!") and man does this trailer do a good job of selling it. I want to watch! Don't skip this trailer. Paramount Pictures' film adaptation of Baywatch may have recruited a new lifeguard.
Variety reports that Quantico star Priyanka Chopra is in negotiations to join the cast alongside Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario, and Kelly Rohrbach. Seth Gordon (The King of Kong, Horrible Bosses) is directing, and the most recent draft of the script reportedly comes from writers Damian Shannon and Mark Swift.
The movie, an adaptation of the popular '90s TV series, is a comedy that surrounds "a by-the-book and very serious lifeguard (Johnson) who is forced to team up with a young rule-flouting hothead (Efron) in order to save their beach from environmental destruction at the hands of an oil tycoon."
No word yet on Chopra's potential role, but filming is supposed to begin sometime soon, so we'll keep an ear to the ground and bring you more info on this movie as we hear about it.

The Baywatch movie cast continues to head up. We know Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron are playing the male leads and Alexandra Daddario scored the female lead, but now Variety reports that model Kelly Rohrbach will be playing the role of C.J. Rohrbach has had a handful of small roles in the past, including stints on Rizzoli & Isles, Two and a Half Men, and the CW Seed series The P.E.T. Squad Files, but this will be her most high-profile role by a long shot. (She also has an undisclosed role in one of Woody Allen's upcoming movies.)

To this day, The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters remains one of my favorite geek-focused documentaries. It's a journey through a very niche and exclusive world of coin operated arcade competition. Grown men compete for all-time records on games ancient by today's standards, and get super salty and obsessive when their records are broken. Featured prominently throughout the film is Billy Mitchell, who once held both the record for high scores in Pac-Man and Donkey Kong. Mitchell has long protested the film's depiction of him, which makes him seem petty, paranoid, and conniving...and while that may or may not be true, this new expose by Gawker may not help his case.
Mitchell recently had a case thrown out by a judge after the gaming champ attempted to sue the Cartoon Network program Regular Show over its depiction of him, which can be seen below.

Well, that didn't take long. Last week, word came out that a handful of actresses were testing for the female lead in Paramount's upcoming Baywatch movie opposite the already-cast Zac Efron and Dwayne Johnson. I wrote about how my guess for who'd win the role was Alexandra Daddario, not only because of the eye candy factor (this may as well be called Eye Candy: The Movie), but because she already worked with Johnson on San Andreas. Now Johnson himself has confirmed that Daddario has joined the cast:
It's Official: Want to welcome the talented and gorgeous @alexannadaddario to the cast of #Baywatch for the role of "Summer". Alex is a one of kind woman (I know from experience) and can't wait for you guys to see her own the role. 50 fabulous documentary films, covering hard politics through to music, money and films that never were...
Thanks to streaming services such as Netflix, we’ve never had better access to documentaries. A whole new audience can discover that these real life stories are just as thrilling, entertaining, and incredible as the latest big-budget blockbuster. What’s more, they’re all true too. But with a new found glut of them comes the ever more impossible choice, what’s worth your time? Below is my pick of the 50 best modern feature length documentaries.
I’ve defined modern as being from 2000 onwards, which means some of the greatest documentaries ever made will not feature here. I’m looking at you Hoop Dreams.
50. McConkey (2013)
d. Rob Bruce, Scott Gaffney, Murray Wais, Steve Winter, David Zieff
Shane McConkey was an extreme skier and Base jumper who lived life on the edge, and very much to the full.

Pac-Man. Donkey Kong. Space Invaders. These are the classics. Retro gaming brands so strong that they continue to have a hip presence decades removed from their arcade debuts. And then there’s Nibbler, a game that is at best only vaguely familiar - a derivative cross between Pac-Man and the ancient computer game Snake from jukebox manufacturer Rock-ola. It’s the game at the heart of the crowd-pleasing documentary Man Vs. Snake. The star of the film is Tim McVey, a small-town machinist whose teenaged glory days as the first billion-point scorer on Nibbler come back to haunt him as an adult. His record score is threatened by an unofficial upsuper from Italy and Dwayne Richard, a ”bad boy” veteran of the competitive gaming world. Like The King of Kong...

Another day, another remake. This time Paramount is finally putting together an update "big-screen take" on the 90s TV show that originally starred David Hasselhoff & Pamela Anderson. THR reports Paramount has set director Seth Gordon, of Identity Thief, Horrible Bosses, Four Christmases and The King of Kong, to take on the new Baywatch which is also set to star Dwayne Johnson. Johnson has been attached since late last year, and the project has been gestating for at least a decade. We've been hearing about some rumblings and rumors of a Baywatch movie forever, but now it sounds like they're pushing forward with it (another name brand project, of course) with Gordon in negotiations to take the job directing. I'm intrigued. Paramount's new take on a Baywatch movie has been in the works for years. The script has undergone many revisions and the latest iteration is by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift.

The King of Kong: Columbus Peddles Dopey Sandler Comedy
Hailing from some parallel universe where Never Never Land must be the capital is Pixels, a Chris Columbus directed Adam Sandler comedy pasted together by his usual writer, Tim Herlihy and returning collaborator Timothy Dowling (Just Go With It, 2011). If there’s anyone to pity here, it’s Patrick Jean, the director of the 2010 short film upon which this concept is based. As far as Sandler’s handlers go, it’s uncertain who or what this feature length version is geared towards, a family friendly package severely dumbed down for the enjoyment of today’s tots yet emblazoned with obsolete video games two generations removed from the only audience members unoffended by the laziness and stupidity of the final product. Though some supporting players escape less scathed by this misbegotten lump of a film, Sandler and co. seem tone deaf...
