When the Emmy nominations are announced July 17, something will happen that hasn’t happened in 50 years: The nominees for best drama series will include only one previously nominated show, Netflix’s The Crown. I would love to be able to say that’s because there are so many great dramas out there and that TV Academy members are diligently watching them and championing different great ones this year. But the truth is, this field, historically among the strongest each season, now looks like a wasteland.
Such perennial nominees as HBO’s Succession and Westworld and AMC’s Better Call Saul have ended, along with second-tier contenders like Paramount+’s The Good Fight and Star Trek: Picard. Some ongoing, previously nominated shows were not back in time to be eligible, in some cases because of delays caused by the writers and actors strikes, including Netflix’s Stranger Things, Squid Game and Bodyguard; HBO/Max’s Euphoria,...

“The Good Wife” introduced Carrie Preston‘s Elsbeth Tascioni back in 2010. She was so popular with fans that she also featured in the spin-off show “The Good Fight.” Now Preston and Elsbeth take center stage in the brand new spin-off “Elsbeth.”
CBS’ hit drama series follows Elsbeth as she carries out work as an unconventional attorney and helps the NYPD catch criminals with her astute observations. Preston was excellent in her guest role in “The Good Wife” but she is even better here as the main course, as critics have noted.
Ben Travers (Indie Wire) observed: “Preston knows the exact pitch at which to play Elsbeth. Never grating yet always pesky, her unrelenting positivity (and general relentlessness) would undoubtedly get old, fast, in real life. Cops and criminals alike are exhausted by her, but audiences can more easily appreciate her dogged demeanor because a) we know she’s on the right track,...

If you’re not caught up on your peak TV viewing, consider this your spoiler warning. Four months have passed since Jennifer Coolidge bagged her second consecutive Emmy for “The White Lotus” and thus became the eighth drama or comedy series regular honored by the TV academy for a season in which her character died. Emmy nominations of this kind have become quite common in recent years, and it’s possible that over 15% of the 2024 lead and supporting continuing series contenders will be added to the list.
The current consensus among more than 2,400 Gold Derby users is that five continuing series performers whose characters perished within the past year will receive Emmy nominations, while a few others have outside shots at recognition. This does not include characters like Anakin Skywalker who died before their shows’ latest seasons began but appear as ghosts or in flashbacks. Undead characters like most of...

“It’s so important that women like this are not forgotten from history,” declares Maisie Williams about her role as unsung hero Catherine Dior in the Apple TV+ prestige drama “The New Look.” Catherine was best known as a French Resistance fighter during World War II and who is often attributed as her brother Christian’s muse and inspiration for his iconic Miss Dior perfume that he launched in 1947.
For our recent webchat she adds, “if we’re going look at Catherine being one of the original muses of the Dior fashion house, you really have to understand how it is that she inspired Christian. And in order to do that, you have to really understand her life,” she explains. “I feel really grateful that more people are going to learn about her because she’s not someone that we think about when we think of the history of fashion.

[This story contains spoilers from the first season of The New Look.]
The first season of Apple TV+’s The New Look ends with Christian Dior (Ben Mendelsohn) debuting his revolutionary 1947 collection that would be dubbed “the new look” by Harper’s Bazaar editor-in-chief Carmel Snow (Glenn Close). The show then quickly flashes forward through some of the Dior brand’s iconic looks over the decades, which seems to suggest that the series is done with Dior’s story.
But creator Todd A. Kessler tells The Hollywood Reporter that he has a long runway planned for the series, which has yet to be officially renewed for a second season. A potential season two would continue to focus on Dior and Coco Chanel (Juliette Binoche) before subsequent seasons would stay with the Dior brand as it was inherited by Yves Saint Laurent.

Very sad news today as it’s been reported that M. Emmet Walsh has died at the age of 88. No matter the size of the role, the prolific character actor always made a unique impression throughout his long career, which spanned six decades.
M. Emmet Walsh is best known for playing Bryant in Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, the captain of the Los Angeles Police Department who tasks Deckard with tracking down the replicants at the beginning of the film. He told THR that the cast and crew weren’t quite sure what the make of the movie when they first saw it. “I don’t know if I really understood what in the hell it was all about,” Walsh said. “We all sat there and it ended. And nothing. We didn’t know what to say or to think or do! We didn’t know what in the hell we had done!

Having been off-screen since at least July 2023, “General Hospital” actor Réal Andrews recently took to Instagram to share an update on his status at the daytime drama series, informing fans that it’s up to them as to whether the show will bring him back as Marcus Taggert.
When viewers last saw Taggert, he was on a downward spiral after learning that the daughter he believed to be his was, in fact, someone else’s through a separate relationship Portia (Brook Kerr) had with Curtis Ashford (Donnell Turner). Despite Trina (Tabyana Ali) going through the most in the months since Taggert last appeared on-screen, including the presumed death of her first love, Spencer (Nicholas Chavez), one would think it was time for the character to make his return to the canvas, and possibly play out yet another twist of parental lineage.

Plot:: This emotionally thrilling series reveals the shocking story of how fashion icon Christian Dior and his contemporaries, including Coco Chanel, Pierre Balmain, and Cristóbal Balenciaga navigated the horrors of World War Il and launched modern fashion.
Review: Fashion design has found great success as fodder for reality series and romantic comedies. Films like The Devil Wears Prada, Robert Altman’s Pret-a-Porter, and Ryan Murphy’s limited series Halston have looked at the intricacies of the fashion world, mostly from a contemporary standpoint. ‘The New Look’ Trailer: Ben Mendelsohn’s Christian Dior Seeks to “Create a New World” in 1940s Paris
Against the backdrop of the World War II Nazi occupation of Paris, Ben Mendelsohn’s Christian Dior is seeking to create a new way forward in the trailer for the upcoming Apple TV+ historical drama, The New Look.
The 10-episode series, which reunites Mendelsohn with his Bloodline showrunner Todd A. Kessler, explores the interwoven saga of how Christian Dior, Coco Chanel (Juliette Binoche) and their contemporaries dealt with the horrors of World War II and launched modern fashion. Kessler created, wrote, directed and executive produced The New Look.
The trailer for the show teases tension between Dior and Chanel as the former ascends to prominence while Chanel’s status as the world’s most famous fashion designer is threatened.
“Christian Dior ruined French couture, and I’m coming back to save it,” Chanel proclaims at one point before later dismissively asking, “You think Dior is fashion?”

This series is set during the Nazi occupation of Paris, and explores the rise of fashion designer Christian Dior, as he dethrones Coco Chanel and helps return spirit and life to the world with his iconic imprint of beauty and influence. Made in collaboration with the House of Dior, so don't expect anything critical about them. The...

It’s more like unlucky Hank.
AMC has canceled Lucky Hank, the drama series starring Bob Odenkirk, after one season.
The series, which marked Odenkirk’s follow-up after Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, wrapped its eight-episode run in May and has been on the bubble during the writers and actors strikes.
The cancellation brings an end to Odenkirk’s run on the network, which dates back to 2009, when he was cast in Breaking Bad. The series concluded its run with a mere 260,000 same-day viewers.
“We’re proud of Lucky Hank and thankful for the work of everyone who brought this unique, playful and deeply human show to viewers, from the talented creative team to our partners at Sony and, of course, Bob, Mireille [Enos] and the entire cast and crew,” AMC said in a statement. “Unfortunately, we are not able to proceed with a second season, but we are glad...

Exclusive: The Bureau creator Eric Rochant is today formally unveiling his production banner, Maui Entertainment, which has quietly launched with backing from Federation Studios.
In an exclusive interview to announce Maui, Rochant said creative talent “must be at the origin and center” of its projects, with a business model geared towards helping new writers and producers become showrunners. He also revealed he was working on a spy drama and a series with Spanish writer Isabel Coixet.
“I learned from Todd Kessler, who made Damages and Bloodline, that a good series must come from a writer who can explain why he’s the only one who can make a specific show,” said Rochant.
Maui quietly launched last year up with a Disney+ order, for Tout va Bien (Everything is Fine), but today marks its market launch. We can reveal the series is due to launch on November 15.

Across three seasons, Rose Byrne has seen her Physical alter ego Sheila Rubin finally achieve self-discovery and self-acceptance through aerobics, having been drawn initially to the exercise as she struggled with an eating disorder and what very well may be some of the most negative self-talk anyone has experienced — at least on television. From the moment viewers were introduced to Sheila in Apple TV+’s dark comedy, she was also joined by the protagonist’s biting and destructive inner voice that seemingly would stop at nothing to keep Sheila from achieving any sort of happiness within her struggling marriage to Danny (Rory Scovel), her extramarital affair with a Morman businessman (Paul Sparks) and her professional partnership with exercise entrepreneurs Bunny (Delia Saba) and Greta (Dierdre Friel).

Forgive us if we occasionally sound surprised or bemused in our coverage of the Suits streaming phenomenon. It’s just that an innocuous 2010s cable series suddenly becoming a monster hit on streaming is a fairly perplexing experience.
Streaming services like Netflix and Peacock, both of which host multiple seasons of Suits, spend untold millions trying to produce their own original hits only for a USA Network series from years ago to blow them all out of the water. People quite simply can’t get enough of the legal machinations of Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht), Michael Ross (Patrick J. Adams), and the rest of the personnel a their constantly-changing law firm.
Why, exactly, has Suits in particular become such a hit? We’ll leave that one for the sociologists. But the show’s success this summer has made one undeniable fact of TV life clear: legal dramas are great! For decades,...

Among the dozen Emmy Awards “Game of Thrones” collected in 2019 for its final season was one for casting, which made it the first drama program to achieve a third victory in that category. Each time it was honored there, it also won Best Drama Series, setting a precedent that “Succession” could emulate this year after having taken both prizes in 2020 and 2022. Although it is heavily favored to clinch the top honor again, its potential casting win might not come as easily or at all, given the remarkably stiff competition it faces from “The White Lotus.”
After winning 10 Emmys in 2022 while classified as a limited series, “The White Lotus” is now competing in seven specific drama series categories, including casting. Its genre shift was triggered by its second season’s incorporation of previously established characters. If you’re behind on your peak TV watching, consider this your spoiler warning. It’s been nearly a year since Julia Garner collected her third and final Emmy for “Ozark,” which made her the seventh comedy or drama series regular to snag a TV academy prize for a season in which her character died. Nominations of this kind have become more common in recent years, and it’s possible that over 15% of the 2023 lead and supporting continuing series contenders will fit into the group.
Gold Derby’s Emmy nominations odds currently indicate that eight actors whose comedic or dramatic characters met their demise within the last year could feasibly earn bids, as all of them are ranked no lower than 12th place in their respective races. This does not include characters like Bunny Folger or John Paul Williams who died prior to the starts of their shows’ latest seasons but still appear in flashbacks.

It was only a matter of time before “Black Mirror” came for the streaming industry, and Season 6 takes a couple of swings directly at Netflix right out of the gate. First with the star-studded, hyper-meta episode “Joan Is Awful,” which introduces the Netflix clone Streamberry (and an arsenal of Easter eggs and references therein). But Episode 2, “Loch Henry,” quiets things down to tackle a much more specific streaming ill — the soulless, exploitative true crime industrial complex and the constant stream of true crime docs digging up traumas from the past.
“Loch Henry” follows an aspiring filmmaker back to his Scottish hometown, where he intends to make a documentary about eggs, only to get sucked into making a film about the horrific crime case that transformed his hometown from a former tourist destination into a desolate ghost town. In “Black Mirror” tradition, the ensemble is a healthy mix of familiar faces,...

AMC continues to mine “The Walking Dead” to death. It has been nearly 13 years since the original series first aired, and yet none of its three spin-offs — soon to be four, plus an additional two in the works — have recaptured the magic of those early Rick Grimes-led seasons. After “The Last of Us” revived the prestige zombie genre with impressive quality and creativity earlier this year, AMC’s insistence on franchising continues to dilute the zombie drama du jour.
The latest spin-off, created and written by “The Walking Dead” producing veteran Eli Jorné, is not likely to convert any new fans. In 2021, Emma Corrin was widely expected to follow up their Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award wins for playing Princess Diana on the fourth season of Netflix’s “The Crown” with a Best Drama Actress Emmy victory. In fact, 69% of the people who predicted the race on Gold Derby thought this would be the outcome, but the trophy ultimately went to fourth-place runner Olivia Colman for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II on the same series. Now, Elizabeth Debicki and Imelda Staunton, who respectively replaced Corrin and Colman as their “Crown” characters, are vying for their own TV academy recognition, but will not have to face each other since Debicki is seeking the Best Drama Supporting Actress prize. “The Crown” cast’s 2021 sweep of the major drama acting Emmy categories will be hard for any show to ever replicate, but those who have inherited their regal roles are going to make a go of it this year. Judging by Gold Derby’s odds, the Netflix series’ best chance at a victory for its fifth season lies with Imelda Staunton, who is looking to continue the Emmy-winning trend in Best Drama Actress for her take on Queen Elizabeth II, just like Claire Foy (2018) and Olivia Colman (2021). Since voters responded well when the part first changed hands, it would make perfect sense for them to show the same love toward the show’s third and final headliner.
The penultimate season of “The Crown,” which originally streamed last November, covers a six-year period in the reign of the aforementioned queen and focuses on the challenges she faces as the third millennium approaches.

“We used to argue for hours,” admits Paul Lieberstein about writing “Lucky Hank” with Aaron Zelman. For our recent webchat he continues, “It was all cured when we realized we agreed on the page almost 100%. We could never agree on what a scene is suppose to be. Then we write the scene and agree completely. But if we then talked about the scene we’ve already written, we’d be disagreeing about why it worked.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Lieberstein and Zelman developed the AMC series “Lucky Hank” from the Richard Russo novel “Straight Man.” They serve as executive producers and writers on the series. The dark comedy is about English department chair Hank, played by Bob Odenkirk, going through a midlife crisis at an underfunded college. Lieberstein says, “He’s a person who’s doing his best to deal with a bunch of stuff . Whenever he hits adversity in any way,...
