During an advance preview of the second part of the ‘How Do You Live? Exhibition’ at the Ghibli Museum on May 24, 2024, Goro Miyazaki revealed that Hayao Miyazaki is working on a new project that could become his next film.
According to Goro Miyazaki, his father began creating panorama boxes based on his past works as a way to pass the time. However, Goro felt that constantly revisiting past works could become monotonous for Hayao Miyazaki.
Encouraging him to pursue new projects, Goro suggested, “Why don’t you create something for your next film?”
“And that’s what he’s working on now,” Goro revealed. “Whether it will actually become his next film, I don’t know, but it’s a nostalgic action-adventure story, and I’m looking forward to it.“
Note: The original Japanese phrase used by Goro Miyazaki is 冒険活劇風 (bouken katsugeki-fu) which translates to – “in the style of an adventure movie/film”. However,...

At the 77th Cannes International Film Festival, where Studio Ghibli was honored with an Honorary Palme d’Or, Director Goro Miyazaki provided fans with a glimpse into the mindset of his father Hayao Miyazaki.
Speaking to the press, prior to the award ceremony, Goro Miyazaki highlighted Hayao Miyazaki’s competitive spirit. According to him, Hayao Miyazaki, despite his advanced age and illustrious career, still regards every animator around him as a rival.
“Even at his age, every animator around him is a rival. Whether they are younger, his supporting staff, within the company, or outside, if they have the title of animator, they are all rivals,” Goro explained.
He further elaborated on how this competitive nature influences Hayao Miyazaki’s approach to new projects.
After the release of his latest film, The Boy And The Heron, Hayao Miyazaki quickly began conceptualizing his next project.
However, Hayao Miyazaki remains extremely secretive about the specifics.

At the 77th Cannes Film Festival, Goro Miyazaki, director and son of legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki, provided candid insights into the future of Studio Ghibli.
Speaking ahead of receiving an Honorary Palme d’Or on behalf of Ghibli at the 77th Cannes International Film Festival, Goro Miyazaki remarked about the failed generational transitions in Ghibli’s history.
“Ultimately, the history of Ghibli is a history of failed generational transitions.”
He recalled that his father first announced his retirement after completing Princess Mononoke in 1997. The creation of the Ghibli Museum was part of this strategy, offering a place for older animators to continue contributing post-retirement.
However, that never came to pass.
Despite numerous attempts to pass the baton, Goro noted that the critical decisions at Studio Ghibli are still predominantly made by Hayao Miyazaki and producer Toshio Suzuki.

The Cannes Film Festival will award legendary Japanese anime house Studio Ghibli with its honorary Palme d’Or this year, the first time Cannes has given its highest award to a company instead of an individual.
“For the first time in our history, it’s not a person but an institution that we have chosen to celebrate,” said Cannes Festival president Iris Knobloch and general delegate Thierry Frémaux, announcing the honor on Wednesday. They praised Ghibli’s animated features as filled with characters who “populate our imaginations with prolific, colorful universes and sensitive, engaging narrations. With Ghibli, Japanese animation stands as one of the great adventures of cinephilia, between tradition and modernity.”
Founded in 1985 by Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Takahata, Toshio Suzuki, and Yasuyoshi Tokuma, Studio Ghibli has in the past 40 years, “achieved what seemed to be an impossible feat: Independently producing pure masterpieces and conquering the mass market,” the festival said.

Miyazaki Hayao’s “The Boy and the Heron,” which recently won the Oscar for best animated feature film, will head to global streaming giant Netflix later this year, excluding the U.S. and Japan.
The hand-drawn, critically acclaimed fantasy adventure film is part of a renewed worldwide catalog deal between Netflix and the Japanese producer Studio Ghibli, sales agent Goodfellas and independent distributor GKids. No release date was disclosed.
It was recently confirmed that “The Boy and the Heron” will go into theatrical release in mainland China from April 3 and that it will also enjoy theatrical rereleases in the U.S. and Japan.
Netflix, Studio Ghibli and Goodfellas predecessor Wild Bunch International struck a multiyear deal in February 2020. The Netflix agreement excludes the U.S. — where Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max holds streaming rights on Studio Ghibli films — and Studio Ghibli’s home market of Japan. In the U.S.

Hayao Miyazaki stands as a luminary in the anime and animation realm, wielding multiple roles – director, producer, scriptwriter, animator, author, manga artist, and Studio Ghibli's co-owner. Reshaping the landscape, he was one of the pioneers of elevating anime beyond teenage audiences. His magnum opus, “Spirited Away,” broke records and became the first anime to win an Oscar. In 2014, he earned an Honorary Academy Award, a testament to his cinematic impact. A prolific storyteller since 1972, Miyazaki, continues to come up with titles that top the category, although his latest one, “The Boy and the Heron” could possibly be his last.

Howl's Moving Castle.I returned to the films of Hayao Miyazaki last year because the kids I nanny in Brooklyn—A, eight, and J, six—happened upon Studio Ghibli Fest while they were away over the summer in Upstate New York, visiting their grandparents in a town where they had spent the early pandemic. Of the two, J’s infatuation with Miyazki is least surprising: his interests include black holes, rare crystals, and mushrooms, especially the poisonous varieties. Through his eyes, I rediscovered Miyazaki, rewatching once-familiar films with a new attunement to their strangeness. In the process I was reminded of first meeting J, when he was four years old and still reeling from his family’s relocation from a house Upstate to their apartment in Brooklyn. He was particularly incensed about having to wear shoes, which I imagine crystallized the totality of the transformation: in that passage from grass to concrete,...

Mermaid fairy tales have enjoyed lasting popularity since Andersen's “The Little Sea Maid” and La Motte-Fouqué's “Undine”. Recent (unequal) reboots can further attest to this enduring appeal. Nothing surprising when considering the universality of these legendary creatures across civilizations and times. As for Japanese folklore, the Ningyo has gained a significant prominence not long ago through Miyazaki's “Ponyo” (2008). Just a decade later, the director of the celebrated “Mind Game” (2004), Masaaki Yuasa, developed his own rendition, this time in the form of a coming-of-age narrative.

Although he was planning on continuing work on the Evangelion series, supervising animator Takeshi Honda decided to join The Boy and the Heron after speaking with director Hayao Miyazaki. In working closely with the “renowned maestro”, Honda found ways to ground the characters in reality to match a more somber style.
In his most personal work to date, Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron follows the story of a young boy named Mahito, who has recently lost his mother. Along with a cunning and deceptive gray heron, he journeys to a mysterious world outside of time where the dead and the living coexist. The Boy and the Heron won the 2024 Golden Globe for Best Animated Motion Picture.

The Animated World is a regular feature spotlighting animation from around the globe. The Boy and the Heron.“And what about you? What will you create? You take many things from the world, but I wonder what you will give back in return?”—Genzaburo Yoshino, How Do You Live? Part of the genius of Hayao Miyazaki is his ability to captivate his audience so deeply with his films that they don’t realize he is asking an essential question: how do you live? Yet, his films do. Each of them demands that we think, reflect, and change. Visually, they burst like a star in our mind’s eye while the stories slowly lead us toward realization. They warm our hearts while showing us how complex and contradictory people are—by turns selfish and selfless. From Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984) to The Wind Rises (2013), Miyazaki’s stunning, hand-drawn aesthetic and stirring,...

After Hayao Miyazaki took three years to finish the initial storyboard for “The Boy and the Heron”, it became obvious that he needed help. With diminished stamina and failing eyesight, the legendary anime auteur was no longer able to control everything. So he invited Takeshi Honda (“Neon Genesis Evangelion”), the supervising animator on his hybrid CG/2D short “Boro the Caterpillar,” to join his upcoming feature.
Honda was flattered and told Miyazaki that he would think about it because he was already committed to “Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time,” the franchise film finale. “But at that time, Miyazaki san said, ‘I don’t have time — there is no one in the Miyazaki family who is over 80 years old.’ I thought it was a big deal,” Honda told IndieWire over Zoom through an interpreter.

10. Ponyo At the bottom of our list, but certainly not lacking in charm, is Ponyo, a film that captures the simple, joyful spirit of childhood. This whimsical tale is reminiscent of Hans Christian Andersen’s ‘The Little Mermaid’ and incorporates elements from Wagner’s powerful ‘Ride of the Valkyries’ and Japanese folklore. Its environmental message, woven through scenes like the man-made debris in the ocean, reflects Miyazaki’s concern for our planet. The film’s appeal to younger audiences is undeniable, and it stands as a testament to Miyazaki’s ability to enchant viewers of all ages. 9. Porco Rosso Next is Porco Rosso,...

Hayao Miyazaki's first feature in 10 years crept into theaters with a bang. After many years of a wish-washy retirement, the 83-year old director of beloved Studio Ghibli titles like “Spirited Away” and “Princess Mononoke” returned with his beautifully animated “The Boy and the Heron.” Notably, though the film appeared in Japanese theaters sans PR (a deliberate choice on Miyazaki's end), the movie has taken the world by storm. I personally have been hearing about it since the day of its premiere: first, friends reporting back on their summer Japan travels; then other journalists at TIFF; and finally, within vicinity, from neighbors and colleagues near me, as the film scoops the coveted No. 1 spot in the North American box office. With Gkids' North American release hitting the high of the holidays, it is almost no wonder that film critics have been tittering about “The Boy and the Heron's” potential...

It had been a quiet couple of weeks at the box office until "Wonka" arrived to liven things up with a bigger-than-expected debut. Luckily, "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" has had long legs, or theaters would truly be in rough shape, as Disney's "Wish" flopped pretty hard and "Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce" didn't hold nearly as well as "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour" did. Thankfully, a pair of imports from Japan emerged as unexpected saviors.

After taking in $3.5 million in Thursday previews, Wonka looks to take in ten times that in its opening weekend for an estimated $35 million. While that number comes in shy of the $40 million tracking saw this one hitting earlier in the week (and way shy of the $45 million I thought it could hit in our predictions from Thursday), this feels like a Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and Greatest Showman scenario. Each one of those movies began their lives with underwhelming debuts only to enjoy steady numbers in the weeks after they were released. Wonka feels like that type of movie, a big budget musical filled with magical elements that is basically (if not fully) a prequel to a movie that nearly everyone has seen. Add to that some solid reviews (including a 7/10 from our own Chris Bumbray), a Golden Globe Nomination for Timothee Chalamet’s lead performance and...

In the contemporary field of Japanese animation, no one makes films and TV shows like Yuasa Masaaki. Compared to the lifelike backgrounds and careful detailing of facial animations that typify much of anime, Yuasa’s mash-ups of disciplines and methods recall the unorthodox approaches of Don Hertzfeldt and Soviet-era Hungarian animators like Marcell Jankovics and György Kovásznai. But Yuasa’s north star—in underlying motivation, if not aesthetic—may be Tex Avery, whose brand of unpredictable comedy can be seen in the filmmaker’s willingness to upend character continuity and even the fundamental outlines of drawings for the sake of pursuing a joke or feeling to its most outlandish conclusion.

This weekend was a relatively slow one with Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron landing in first place with $12.8 million. While that number may seem a little low for a first place finish, it is actually quite the feat as it becomes Gkids (American distributor of Indie Animation titles) and Studio Ghibli’s (Japan Animation Studio) highest domestic opening of all time. The film also becomes Academy Award Winner Miyazaki’s highest domestic opening of all time while only about $5 million away from becoming his highest grossing domestic release of all time (a title currently held by 2008’s Ponyo with $15.7 million)

This is one of those weekend’s where you can see the effects of both the covid backlog and the strikes merging together to give us a relatively quiet weekend. We are in the second week of December and the biggest new release on the schedule is Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron. Granted, Miyazaki has earned his reputation as one of the best ever in the animation game with such classics as Castle In The Sky, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo and The Wind Rises (with Spirited Away landing the legendary filmmaker an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature).
With The Boy and the Heron taking over premium screens this weekend, it is possible that studios decided to back off to ensure their own large scale releases have access to those screens. It does appear that there is excitement in the air for this...

This past weekend was a bit erratic with a few movies doing surprisingly better than others, but this weekend, there’s really only one new wide release, as much of December’s big holiday releases don’t hit until next week. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The one wide release is Gkids’ release of Hayao Miyazaki‘s latest animated feature, “The Boy and the Heron,” which has been playing in select cities but will get a nationwide release into roughly 1,800 theaters in both subtitled and dubbed versions, the latter often being the chosen format for parents with young kids. Miyazaki always gets amazing Western voice casts, this one including Robert Pattinson, Christian Bale, Mark Hamill, Willem Dafoe and many more.
Although Miyazaki’s “Ponyo,” distributed by Disney, is still seen as his biggest box office success in North America with just $15 million, his movies always do...

“The Boy and the Heron” marks the 14th collaboration between Hayao Miyazaki and Joe Hisaishi. But even after almost four decades of working together, the animator and the composer are finding new ways to create new sounds. “The Boy and The Heron” is the story of Mahito (Soma Santoki), a young man who leaves the firebombing of Tokyo for the Japanese countryside in World War II, and then ends up guided by the titular Heron (Masaki Suda) to a completely different place in order to rescue his stepmother Natsuko (Yoshino Kimura) from the clutches of otherworldly forces. And also a lot of birds.
But parakeets hungry for human flesh aren’t the only novel thing about “The Boy and The Heron.” Hisaishi has in the past described his Studio Ghibli scores as a two years on, two years off cycle. When releasing the “Symphonic Celebration” Ghibli collection with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra,...

From Christian Bale as the title character in “Howl’s Moving Castle” to Tina Fey as the mom in “Ponyo,” Studio Ghibli movies tend to attract huge stars for their dubs. For their latest, Hayao Miyazaki’s final film “The Boy and the Heron,” Gkids has assembled what might be the studio’s starriest voice cast yet.
Titled “How Do You Live?” in Japan, “The Boy and the Heron” takes place in the middle of World War II, and follows a teenager living with his father and aunt after the death of his mother as he uncovers a secret, hidden world. Main character Mahito is voiced by Luca Padovan, best known for the TV series “You,” while the denizens he meets of the hidden world are voiced by a variety of A-list talent, including Bale returning to Ghibli, as well as Dave Bautista, Gemma Chan, Willem Dafoe, Karen Fukuhara, Mark Hamill,...

Studio Ghibli, the famed Japanese animation studio of Hayao Miyazaki, will become a subsidiary of Nippon Television Network Corp., both sides said Thursday.
Succession worries had been a priority at Ghibli, as Miyazaki has turned 82, and producer Toshio Suzuki is 75, the companies said in a joint statement.
The boards of both companies agreed at meetings Thursday that the major commercial broadcast network will become Studio Ghibli’s top shareholder, with a 42.3 percent stake. Financial details were not given.
Nippon TV said it will send executives to support Ghibli’s management, while honoring its creative independence so it can focus on animation and other artistic projects.
The deal was first discussed last year at an “onsen” hot springs, the companies said, when Suzuki asked Nippon TV executive Yoshikuni Sugiyama for help in managing Ghibli. Sugiyama promised to give support.
Miyazaki’s son Goro is also an animation director and has been mentioned as a possible successor.

Ponyo is a Japanese animated fantasy film. It was released on July 19, 2008 in theatres across Japan. It was initially released in Japan as Ponyo on the Cliff. The animated film was written and directed by famous Japanese animator, filmmaker, and manga artist, Hayao Miyazaki and was animated by a Japanese-based animation studio, Studio Ghibli. It is Miyazaki’s eighth film to be made under Studio Ghibli. Hayao Miyazaki’s ‘The Boy and the Heron’ Is Studio Ghibli and Gkids’ Biggest Marketing Challenge Yet
It’s been 10 years since animation master Hayao Miyazaki made a film and 12 years since Gkids took over North American distribution for the studio he co-founded and helped make iconic. But though “The Boy and the Heron” — which opened to raves out of TIFF on Thursday — is likely the last Miyazaki film Gkids will have the privilege of releasing, it’s also the distributor’s first.
“The Wind Rises” in 2013 was still released domestically by Disney and Touchstone (it made $5.2 million). And though the distributor’s annual Ghibli Fest has grown year over year in “spreading the gospel” of Ghibli and Miyazaki, as the distributor’s president Dave Jesteadt puts it, having a new film from the man himself is a different challenge entirely.
“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel tremendous pressure. That’s also joined by a feeling of tremendous honor,” Jesteadt told IndieWire.

Hayao Miyazaki’s final film, The Boy and the Heron, has a busy schedule for September. The hand-drawn animated feature, which was released in theaters in Japan on July 14, will open the Toronto Film Festival on Sept. 7 and then, just two weeks later, will kick off San Sebastian Festival, opening the 71st edition of the famed Spanish festival Sept. 22.
The movie will screen out of competition at San Sebastian, unspooling at the Kursaal Auditorium after the opening gala.
Producers Studio Ghibli have described the film as “a grand fantasy” loosely inspired by Japanese author Genzaburo Yoshino’s 1937 novel How Do You Live?, a coming-of-age story about the emotional and philosophical development of a young boy after the death of his father. But they have been uncharacteristically secretive about the movie’s content. It turns out Hayao Miyazaki had nothing to worry about.
Prior to the release of his highly anticipated latest feature, The Boy and the Heron, in Japan on Friday, the legendary animator reportedly expressed some worries about Studio Ghibli’s unprecedented plan to do no marketing at all for the movie — no trailers, no TV ads, not even an announced plot summary or cast. Two weeks before the release, Ghibli co-founder and president Toshio Suzuki revealed at an event in Tokyo Miyazaki was a little anxious about the decision to do zero publicity for what is expected to be his final film. “I do believe in you, Mr. Suzuki,” Miyazaki said. “But I’m concerned…”

Acclaimed anime director Hayao Miyazaki’s latest film, The Boy And The Heron (aka How Do You Live?), hit Japanese theatres on Friday, July 14 with no advance publicity apart from a title and a poster.
The move was a deliberate ploy by Studio Ghibli head Toshio Suzuki to encourage audiences to see Miyazaki’s first film in a decade without preconceptions. “A poster and a title – that’s all we got when we were children. I enjoyed trying to imagine what a movie was about, and I wanted to bring that feeling back,” Suzuki told Japanese broadcaster Nhk.
ComScore reported a $13.2M opening weekend for the film, distributed by Toho, with IMAX saying it set a new three-day opening record with $1.7M from 44 screens.
Reactions from Japan-based critics, none of which were offered advance screenings, are mixed but mostly favourable.

On paper, filmmaker Steven Spielberg and novelist Roald Dahl couldn't be more different. Spielberg has been known as a sentimental filmmaker, expertly presenting many heartwarming fables throughout his career. Thanks to films like "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," "Always," "Hook," and "War Horse," one can see the optimist in Spielberg shining through. His films tend to end well for their protagonists, and his little kid characters experience growth and wonderment, even as they survive mayhem. Yes, Spielberg could be intense and bitter at times, but he's hardly known for his cynicism. Roald Dahl, meanwhile, might be defined by his cynicism. In Dahl's children's stories, the world is a bleak and aggressive place, full of abusive adults and systems designed to exploit children. "Matilda" takes place at the world's most miserable school. "James and the Giant Peach" begins with the eponymous character being horrible abused by his two aunts. It's a...
