Warning: spoilers for Doctor Who episode “The Devil’s Chord”.
Just before Doctor Who baddie the Toymaker was defeated, bound with salt, and imprisoned in a deep, deep vault at the end of 2023 episode “The Giggle”, he issued a threat. “My legions are coming,” he told the Doctor(s).
Well, now the Toymaker’s legions are here.
First, the Christmas special saw a galleon of baby-eating goblins fly in to cause coincidence-based-mischief in “The Church on Ruby Road“. Next, the Toymaker’s offspring Maestro put the willies up the Doctor by wreaking havoc in “The Devil’s Chord”. “That thing must be part of the Pantheon,” the Doctor said about Maestro. “Oh, God.”

One of the most beloved and long-running British Sci-Fi TV shows may be setting up the return of a fan-favorite character in a spin-off series on Disney+.
This has been the plan from the start, that Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor Who production era will feature multiple spin-off series and movies.
The newest Doctor Who era has Ncuti Gatwa taking the reigns as the pivotal character in the show, aka Doctor Who, and bringing a new, fresh take.
This is what makes the Doctor Who universe last as long as it has, as every couple of years, the Doctor and other characters on the show will get a revamp with new actors. This also means that older stories and plots can be revisited with new ideas and even newer and sometimes old faces.

In January 2024, Fourth Doctor companion Louise Jameson returned to Doctor Who in the short promotional film Leela vs the Time War for the release of the Season 15 Blu-ray boxset. It showed Jameson’s character on Gallifrey in the final moments of the Time War being threatened with extermination by the Daleks. “This is not how this ends,” says Leela, before transporting herself to the safety of the Tardis.
As reported by RadioTimes.com, writer/director Pete McTighe said at a BFI screening of 1977 episode “Horror of Fang Rock”, that he saw the new scene as “an opportunity to right [the] wrong” of Jameson’s character’s original exit, in which Leela was hurriedly married off to a Gallifreyan Time Lord.
McTighe has written increasingly ambitious promotional films for these series releases with original actors returning to play their roles, though the complexity of producing them means they won’t be done for every boxset.

Doctor Who has never been shy about tipping a hat to other science fiction franchises. The 2014 Christmas special “Last Christmas” owes a heavy debt to Alien, with its face-hugging alien parasites. Several Star Trek references have beamed onto Doctor Who stories, including the Starfleet-esque crew at the start of another Christmas special, “A Christmas Carol.” The world of comic book superheroes, particularly stories starring Superman, clearly influenced “The Return of Doctor Mysterio.”
Unsurprisingly, Doctor Who and its spinoffs have also acknowledged the most popular sci-fi franchise of the past several decades, Star Wars. Nerdy kid Clyde drops several Wars mentions in The Sarah Jane Adventures, and the Eleventh Doctor compared himself to Yoda in the short “Meanwhile in the Tardis.”
But for the adventures of the Fifteenth Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, the Star Wars nods are getting much more subtle. Speaking with Doctor Who Magazine, senior art director Crissy Howes,...

The worst thing that could possibly happen to a Doctor Who fan is for the show to be cancelled again. Or for it to be broadcast again. Depends who you ask, really.
Despite the advent of the 15th Doctor and the anticipation that brings, there are nagging doubts abroad concerning the show’s future. And that’s fair enough, really. Some fans are just naturally pessimistic, some remember previous crushed hopes around Doctor Who’s wilderness years, and some just look at the state of TV streaming and feel that pessimism is a fairly realistic outlook. It’s also not unreasonable to be concerned that David Tennant is kicking around somewhere, especially given that it was raised by the host during Gatwa’s recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show.
Then there are the folk who simply don’t like Russell T Davies’ writing on Doctor Who. A previous line...

It’s not even November 25th and already we’re looking for Easter Eggs. Then again time has no meaning in a Remembered Tardis, the enigmatic location for Tales of the Tardis. What is Tales of the Tardis? I’m glad you asked. There are no stupid questions here, despite the best efforts of the comments section (I’m joking. Probably). Tales of the Tardis (I should probably put that on my clipboard now) is a new series of Doctor Who stories, edited to omnibus length with no episode breaks and bookended by appearances from characters connected to the stories. We went into more detail about it here.

If Doctor Who fans ever felt hard done by during any of the show’s previous big anniversaries then the 60th is here to soothe spirits, hand out cherished gifts, and generally make a bloody big hair-ruffling fuss of the lot of us.
First came news of David Tennant and Catherine Tate’s return in three anniversary specials, then came the ‘roughly 8 million episodes of Doctor Who are coming to BBC iPlayer on November 1’ announcement, then they brought back Doctor Who Confidential under a different name, and now…
…three Classic era Doctors are returning alongside eight former Doctor Who Companions (plus The Sarah Jane Adventures’ Clyde Langer) for new series Tales of the Tardis.
New Scenes, Classic Who Cast
Not a behind-the-scenes documentary, and not standalone adventures, the six-part series will pair up the stars of classic Who acting in new scenes together, in character, wrapped around episodes from six existing serials.

Doctor Who turns 60 years old this year, and in addition to the three special episodes already headed our way next month starring David Tennant (returning to play the 14th Doctor this time following his run as the 10th years nearly a decade ago) and Catherine Tate (back as Donna Noble) there is big news from the BBC iPlayer. 800 episodes of the main series, plus its various modern spin-offs, are headed to the service.
As well as Doctor Who, episodes from spin-offs The Sarah Jane Adventures, Torchwood and Class will be available. Every episode of Doctor Who Confidential – the behind-the-scenes show broadcast on BBC Three – is also coming to iPlayer.
Some of the Doctor Who stories included are the First Doctor’s original foray with the Daleks and the Fourth Doctor serials The Brain Of Morbius and The City Of Death.

Even long-lapsed "Doctor Who" fans perked up their ears at the news that Russell T Davies, the showrunner who brought the series back with roaring success in 2005 and helmed it throughout the Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant eras, is returning for season 14. He'll be kicking things off with three 60th anniversary specials, featuring Tennant as (somewhat confusingly) the Fourteenth Doctor and Catherine Tate as former companion Donna Noble, before embarking on a new series of adventures with the Fifteenth Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa.
In a new interview with GQ magazine, Davies summarized his reasons for leaving "Doctor Who" in 2010 as "other things to write." Specifically, he wanted to focus on his comedy-drama series "Cucumber," which he'd been working on intermittently during his tenure as showrunner. After handing the reins over to Steven Moffatt, Davies moved to America, where he finished writing "Cucumber" and even received an offer from George Lucas...

Whether you're a long-time fan of "Doctor Who" or a relatively new Whovian that started following the seminal British sci-fi series after the 2005 reboot, you know that The Doctor's history is basically a big ball of wibbly wobbly, timey-wimey stuff. And after nearly sixty years of stories, you start to revisit some of your old favorites. For starters, Russell T. Davies is returning to helm the BBC series (which makes its debut on Disney+ internationally starting this year), along with former stars David Tennant and Catherine Tate, to reconnect with some of the most beloved characters of the modern era of the show before the universe meets Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor.

Returning showrunner Russell T Davies has spoken in the past about how the previous Doctor Who spin-offs came too soon. Given the current expanded universe boom across various franchises led by Marvel’s dominance of cinema and subsequent ventures into TV, the launch of The Sarah-Jane Adventures, Torchwood, etc…. was ahead of its time.

Here we are again, then. Doesn’t seem like five minutes since Easter, does it? I swear I’ve still got half a chocolate rabbit in the fridge… But time trundles on, and we’re here to bid goodbye to Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor after what feels like an oddly-fleeting tenure in the Tardis.
In terms of episode count, Whittaker’s run hasn’t been that much shorter than, say, Peter Capaldi’s. But then, both Capaldi and Matt Smith’s Doctors went through a number of evolutions in their time, with marked shifts in their personalities as companions came and went. We glimpsed Eleven’s decades on Trenzalore and Twelve’s exile in his confession dial, watching those Doctors grow old and weary. Ready for their end.

Martha Jones is perhaps one of the most underrated but highly important companions in the Doctor Who television series. Sarah Jane Smith, played by the late, great Elisabeth Sladen, was the most important companion in Doctor Who’s history. She played the companion character alongside Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker’s Doctors from 1973 to 1976 and was so successful in the part that she single-handedly made a case for equal billing for the companion character 30 years before it actually happened in the 2005 season.
Looking back, she had such a profound impact on the show and became such a popular character that there was virtually a rejection of other characters in favor of Sarah, leading to the creation of her own spin-off series. But who was Sarah Jane Smith, and how has she evolved in Doctor Who?

“But we’re time-travelling too fast, there’s a whole series of Jodie Whittaker’s brilliant Doctor for me to enjoy, with my friend and hero Chris Chibnall at the helm – I’m still a viewer for now.”
Added Chibnall: “It’s monumentally exciting and fitting that Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary will see one of Britain’s screenwriting diamonds return home."

Sick as a dog. It’s a dog’s life. Dog-tired. Dog days. In the doghouse. Listen to the idioms and you could well believe that dogs had it rough. (Ruff? – Ed) They don’t. Dogs have it so good, or at least, the smart ones do.
Not the ones so clever they can understand over 50 words and dial the emergency services when you get a concussion, but the ones a step cleverer than that – the dogs who know that true happiness lies in being as dumb as a sack of hammers and of no use as anything other than a warm-bellied draught excluder.
So spare a thought for the guide dogs, police sniffer dogs and avalanche rescue dogs, those poor chumps. Do they know that other dogs don’t have jobs? While they’re up at the crack of dawn, ironing their little dog uniform and clocking in their little dog timecard,...

‘The truth is it never goes away’ says David Tennant. ‘It’s 15 years since I did it and I’m here today!’ He’s talking, of course, about Doctor Who. To mark the show’s arrival in the Us on streaming service HBO Max, Tennant united for an online panel with fellow Doctors Matt Smith and Jodie Whittaker to reminisce about their respective tenures in the Tardis.
Speaking from their UK homes to IGN’s Terri Schwarz, Tennant and Smith spoke about their experiences handing over the role, while Whittaker gave her advice to whoever would take up the mantle next. She told the eventual next-in-line (whoever they may be) that the pressure of the show’s history needs to be forgotten and the newcomer isn’t expected to repeat what’s been done before, only to continue to make it different and new.

Doctor Who fans were gifted with something very special today as the BBC released a new short which acts as an epilogue to beloved spinoff show The Sarah Jane Adventures. The series came to a premature end after five seasons back in 2011, following leading lady Elisabeth Sladen tragically passing away. Nine years later, creator Russell T. Davies has managed to regroup many of the cast – remotely, of course – for a poignant tale that wraps up the Sja team’s adventures.
In doing so, it reveals where Sarah Jane’s young friends Rani Chandra (Anjli Mohindra), Clyde Langer (Daniel Anthony) and her son Luke Smith (Thomas Knight) are now, with them all going on to successful careers. Once an aspiring journalist, we learn Rani is about to publish an expose that will topple the British government. Meanwhile, Clyde – who dreamt of working in comics in the show – is said to be...

It has been nine years since Elisabeth Sladen, known to millions of “Doctor Who” fans as Sarah Jane Smith, passed away. Now, Whovians finally have a chance to say goodbye as former “Who” showrunner Russell T. Davies released a 15-minute audio epilogue for “The Sarah Jane Adventures,” the spinoff series that featured the beloved Tardis companion.
Narrated by Jacob Dudman, who has played the Doctor in several audio dramas, the epilogue reveals that Sarah Jane had died alongside Sladen. All of her friends from Bannerman Road are there at her funeral, including Clyde Langer, Rani Chandra, and her adopted son Luke. Her funeral is also attended by two fellow companions of the Doctor, Jo Grant and Ace, played once again by Katy Manning and Sophie Aldred.

To keep Whovians entertained while we’re stuck indoors during this period of quarantine, Doctor Who creatives past and present have been sharing new content online, with many of them featuring the return of fan favorite stars. The best of the lot, though, has to be this new video – released today – which finally wraps up beloved spinoff show The Sarah Jane Adventures in the most emotional, satisfying way.
First of all, in case you aren’t aware, Sja followed classic companion Sarah Jane Smith’s adventures after her life with the Doctor. It had a successful five season run from 2007 to 2011, and was only brought to a premature end when leading lady Elisabeth Sladen passed away. The series never got a proper conclusion, then, but creator Russell T. Davies has now brought together various familiar faces to give it a finale at long last.

Doctor Who fans like to argue about the relative quality of the Chris Chibnall era of the show, with many of the past two seasons’ future-set or contemporary stories being criticized for whatever reason. Nearly two and a half runs in, though, we can safely say that the historical episodes of this era are the most consistent. Perhaps it’s because there’s a ready-made story and setting to dive into, but – as seen in the likes of 2018’s “Rosa” and “Demons of the Punjab” – whenever the Thirteenth Doctor travels to the past, it usually results in a solid hour of television. And, wouldn’t you know it, tonight’s “Nicola Tesla’s Night of Terror” continues that trend.
First of all, this episode marks the Who debut of writer Nina Metivier, who’ll hopefully be invited back next year given the strength of her first script. Despite her background in children’s TV,...

Doctor Who season 12 continues this Sunday with the colorfully-titled “Nikola Tesla’s Night of Terror.” As you can probably guess, the episode is another historical adventure which sees the Tardis arrive at the turn of the 20th century where the Thirteenth Doctor and her pals come face to face with electrician/inventor and all-round genius Nikola Tesla, as played by Goran Visnjic.
As well as Visnjic, Robert Glenister will also feature as Tesla’s more famous rival, Thomas Edison. This is Glenister’s second time in Doctor Who as well, as he previously played a role in “The Caves of Androzani,” the highly-acclaimed 1984 storyline that wrote out the Fifth Doctor. Another familiar face involved in the episode is Anjli Mohindra, who previously starred as Rani on spinoff The Sarah Jane Adventures. Here, she plays Queen Skithra, the ruler of a race of scorpion-like aliens.

Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad actress Laura Fraser and Bodyguard star Anjli Mohindra are set to make guest appearances in Doctor Who season 12.
As is usually the way with Doctor Who, the BBC did not reveal any details about their characters because it will give away plot points before the series premieres on BBC One and BBC America on New Year’s Day.
Fraser offered one solitary clue, saying her character is “intense.” The actress, who also starred in BBC One’s The Missing, added: “I watched Doctor Who every week as a child, so it was a massive thrill to be asked to take part in such an iconic show.”
Mohindra played recurring villain Rani Chandra in Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures but will take on a new role in the so-called Whoniverse, in which she said she plans on “bringing some terror.”

Doctor Who‘s Peter Capaldi and Mark Gatiss were both last seen on the show back in 2017’s Christmas special “Twice Upon a Time,” but they’ll be teaming up again this yuletide for a chilling new ghost story.
Gatiss, who’s also the co-creator of Sherlock alongside former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat, has penned Martin’s Close, a 30-minute adaptation of a classic tale from Victorian horror author M.R. James that’s set to arrive on the BBC this December. James’ story is presented as a record of the trial of John Martin, a man accused of killing his lover, who may just be haunted by her vengeful spirit.
The Twelfth Doctor himself will feature in the cast as barrister Dolben. He’ll be joined by Wilf Scolding, Simon Williams, Sara Crowe, Fisayo Akinade and Elliot Levey. Martin’s Close follows on from 2018’s The Dead Room, an...

Jodie Whittaker’s first season of Doctor Who was kept completely easily-accessible to new viewers by doing away with all classic monsters, something that came as a controversial decision for hardcore fans. Whovians were overjoyed, then, when a lone Dalek appeared in the New Year’s Day special “Resolution,” as it promised that more familiar foes would be filtered into the series again in season 12. Sure enough, an old alien has now been confirmed to appear in the next run.
The monsters in question are the Judoon, the rhino-headed race known for their short alien language consisting of “o” sounds. The creatures debuted back in 2007’s “Smith and Jones” opposite David Tennant’s Doctor. They then appeared in numerous smaller cameo roles after that – as well as in an episode of spinoff The Sarah Jane Adventures – but haven’t shown up since 2015.

This Doctor Who article contains spoilers. It comes from Den of Geek UK.
The wheelie-bins are being collected, the fridge is starting to feel suspiciously devoid of chocolates, and the wanderer from Gallifrey has slipped back into the stars. All that’s left to do now is twiddle our thumbs and wait patiently for a full calendar year to pass before we’re once again taken on adventures through time and space. That’s no fun, though, so let’s stave off the post-Christmas lull by considering where Doctor Who has left us (Croydon? Aberdeen?) and indulge in some wild speculation about what might be next.

Season 11 has ended, but Doctor Who is the story that never ends. What did Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures and Class leave unanswered?

What do Mandip Gill, Tosin Cole and Bradley Walsh have in common? Other than the fact that they're all joining Jodie Whittaker's Doctor as part of the regular cast of Doctor Who's next series, they've all acted in soap operas. Even 12 years since the show was revived by a former Coronation Street writer, that still makes some fans nervous.
Whatever your thoughts on Corrie, EastEnders and other serial dramas (to give them their proper name – the nickname comes from an outdated observation about soap companies sponsoring many of them), they're the best, most relevant training ground for young actors in British television. It's also more relevant to the experience of working on Doctor Who than you might necessarily expect.

Doctor Who fans, cast your mind back to the jam-packed season 4 finale, “The Stolen Earth/Journey’s End.” The epic two-parter formed a three-way crossover between Doctor Who and its spinoffs, Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures, as it saw characters from all three shows teaming up to foil a Dalek invasion of Earth. Though they defeated the monsters (of course), the battle cost the life of one of the Doctor’s allies: former prime minister Harriet Jones (Downton Abbey‘s Penelope Wilton).
Well, at least, we thought it did. Now, writer/previous showrunner Russell T. Davies has revealed that he’s retconned the character’s death out of canon in the most unlikely of ways: via an illustration in his new Doctor Who poem book, Now We Are Six Hundred.

After weeks of speculation, BBC Three controller Damian Kavanagh has confirmed that the show has been cancelled after just one season.
Class was created by Patrick Ness, with Steven Moffat acting as executive producer, alongside Brian Minchin – who produced the previous two Doctor Who spinoff shows, The Sarah Jane Adventures, and Torchwood. Its premise revolved around the familiar and regular Doctor Who location of Coal Hill Academy, with a group of students and staff supporting the work of the Doctor in dealing with extra-terrestrial menaces – against a backdrop of pubescent trials and tribulations. Doctor Who fans woke up to the news this morning that Peter Capaldi, the show’s twelfth incarnation of The Doctor, is leaving the show. His departure is not entirely unexpected, as it coincides with the exit of the showrunner Steven Moffat, who has been with the show since Matt Smith took over the role.
It is bittersweet ending for Capaldi’s Doctor, who had to follow the double act of the aforementioned Smith and David Tennant. The show struggled to find its feet with Capaldi initially, however under Capaldi’s reign the show has seen some of its finest hours. We loved his entanglements with Missy, and his one man show Heaven Sent from Series Nine is one of the best episodes of the show’s entire run.

Now, Minchin has reflected on the show's final months, in conversation with Doctor Who Magazine.
"It was doing hugely well on Cbbc", he recalled. "We already had scripts commissioned [for future episodes]. We were ready to go. And Cbbc wanted more series after that. We’d been in to have meetings.
"Russell [T Davies] was living in La, but was fully committed to it. Then Lis [Sladen] rang Russell to tell him the news [that she was struggling with cancer]. It was quite a shock.

The Doctor may have been zooming through time and space in his Tardis since 1963, but what about all the regular earthbound folk he encounters along the way? What about all the average citizens living and working in these places that he visits? That is the question that will be addressed in Class – the brand new spin-off show that debuts on BBC Three and BBC One in October 2016. The creator of the show has been discussing some of the finer details of the series with Empire Magazine.
Set in the fictional Coal Hill Academy in London, the show centres all of its action on this location that will be very familiar to fans of Doctor Who.
“Coal Hill has existed in Doctor Who since literally episode one. The Doctor’s granddaughter went there. So we thought, ‘All that time activity at the school, has that caused any problems?’ Well, what do you know,...

We revisit Tom's Midnight Garden, Moondial, The Chronicles Of Narnia and a few lesser-known UK children's TV series...
Read our look-back at UK kids' fantasy dramas 1980 - 1984 here.
By 1985 British TV's children's drama had really hit its stride, achieving "a balanced diet of programmes" as Edward Barnes, the head of the BBC children's department observed. The late 80s, arguably, saw a new golden age for spooky and magical kids drama. Excellent production values, improved significantly by well-honed special effects work using Quantel, Paintbox and Harry, and moreover some interesting casting - often of very talented newcomers - produced some of the most memorable dramas of the era.
The second half of the decade saw the BBC riding high on the back of the success of their state-of-the-art adaptation of John Masefield's Box Of Delights. Meanwhile, anthology series Dramarama was going from strength to strength on ITV.

"Doctor Who" is one of the longest-running franchises in all of space and time -- it's been on TV, radio, and bookshelves for more than 50 years, so there's a lot to dig into. With such a long history, you can join in on the fun anywhere, anytime. Here are the best reasons to join the Doctor in his time machine/spaceship, the Tardis, for adventures throughout the space-time continuum.
1. You Can Start Anywhere
Every fan has an opinion about the best place to start watching "Doctor Who." Some argue for beginning with the 1964 black-and-white series, and others advocate for jumping in with the more modern 2005 version of the franchise -- affectionately known as "Nu Who." Although "Doctor Who" is full of canonical rules, backstories, and in-jokes, most episodes are intended as standalone stories about the Doctor and his companions running into adventures throughout space and time. Really: You can pick...
