The 2000s was an interesting time for cinema. Let’s face it: it was an interesting time in general. In the realm of horror, the beginning of the aughts saw an influx of remakes of J-Horror – some bad, some pretty decent. However, with the post-9/11 cultural climate heightening anxieties and desensitization to violence due to real-world events, another genre emerged, tapping into the darker side of human nature. First coined by David Edelstein in a 2006 article in New York magazine, “torture porn” took the roots of exploitation and splatter films of the 70s and 80s and reintroduced the mainstream audiences to a new level of explicit brutality. Films like Saw, Hostel, The Devil’s Rejects, and the New Extremity of French Horror were raw and unapologetic looks at human depravity. It was everywhere. I mean, there was a time when you couldn’t go more than a year without having a Saw film.

Can you believe it’s already been fifteen years since 2009? I feel older than Jason’s mother’s head. But never mind all that. We’re going to look into the past in celebratory fashion today and take a month-to-month look at what the world of horror looked like back in 2009.
The dreaded month of January kicked things off in usual January fashion with a forgettable title, The Unborn. A David S. Goyer picture that’s not very memorable but managed to be the sixth most successful horror film of 2009 domestically, raking in over $42 million at the box office.
Right behind it on the calendar was Patrick Lussier’s My Bloody Valentine 3D starring “Supernatural” actor Jensen Ackles. This slasher remake took the idea of January horror and embraced it, making a silly and gory slasher that was the world’s first R-rated film to ever use Real3D technology.

It’s not just the bad guys who have to watch their backs anymore. In the chilling wake of the new film Abigail, where a seemingly straightforward kidnapping spirals into a vampire-fueled frenzy, we’ve been inspired to delve into the murky depths of horror movies where it’s evil squaring off against evil. These 12 films twist the usual fright formula by pitting traditional villains—think thieves, rogue agents, and hardened criminals—against adversaries that are unexpectedly more sinister and supernatural. So, buckle up as we unleash a list that explores the darkest corners of human (and non-human) nature, where everyone’s morality is grey and the bad guys get way more than they bargained for…

Director Kevin Smith takes a sharp turn from his usual comedic fare with Red State, a gritty, intense horror-thriller. When three teenagers are lured into an isolated compound, they expect a typical rebellious night.

The Hills Have Eyes 2. No, not that one. That’s The Hills Have Eyes Part 2 and has one of the greatest things ever filmed where a dog, an actual dog, has a flashback and its just, muah, chef’s kiss. While I actually think that original 1985 sequel is way too much fun for its own good – it was written and directed by Craven, brings back Michael Berryman, has Harry Manfredini give us the score, and oh yeah, has a dog flashback. A Dog, Flashback – I’m not here to talk about that one that is probably so bad it’s good. I’m here to discuss the true black sheep of this inbred mountain family and give you all a look at the movie that is not a remake of the sequel but rather a sequel to the remake. The Hills Have Eyes 2 (watch it Here) is a...

2009 is not exactly a year that horror fans remember fondly. What came out that year? Off the top of the head, not much comes up. A quick search gives us The Unborn, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, and Drag Me to Hell. Depending on who you ask, these range from ok movies to Drag Me to Hell, but not exactly memorable overall. Something happened at the end of the 2000s and horror didn’t give us much to work with for some reason. If we dig, we get better titles like The Collector, Laid to Rest, and Paranormal Activity, but their box office ranged from amazing in the case of Paranormal Activity to almost nonexistent for the others, so it was completely hit or miss, like studios didn’t know what to push and what to keep for the home video market. Another movie that had a lot of potential...

Genre movies have a well-earned reputation for being exploitative. Since the dawn of the "B" movie, genre films have been marketed with their exploitation elements up front, the better to entice people to stay in the theater or attend in the first place.
The more genre movies have been reappraised, studied, and eventually raised to the level of revered classics themselves, the more audiences and academics have realized that these films serve numerous important causes within the culture. They often provide the discussion of and investigation into thorny social and political issues that a straightforward drama would have trouble dealing with. They also can be utilized as a powerfully rich tool for normalization, where the marginalized can be the protagonists without having to justify or apologize for themselves, thereby bringing that group closer to the majority.

Enter “hauntreprenuer” Jason Egan, a man whose own spirit of enterprise would take him from his nascent origins as a home haunter to that of transforming Sin City into a worldwide destination for horror fans.

Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.
The Collector
If the triumphant return of the Saw franchise has you in the mood for more trap-laden horrors, look no further than The Collector — which was originally conceived as a prequel to Saw that would show Jigsaw’s original story. When producers passed on the idea, writers Patrick Melton & Marcus Dunstan (Saw IV-vii) reworked it into an original script, which Dunstan directed in 2009.

The horror genre is generally best known for its monsters, ghosts, ghouls, zombies and other weird and wonderful supernatural creatures. Which is great, because we love it all the more for those classic staples. However, some of the most effective horror movies do not rely upon those things, and as playfully gross as they are, they live in the realm of fantasy, so audiences can generally dissociate them from the real world. So, when a horror movie begins and you see the words ‘based upon a true story’, it makes the terror that follows, all the more serious and intense. If you’re one of those people who’s scared easily by horror movies, you can comfort yourself by saying, ‘well, it’s only a movie’, but if you know that what you’re watching actually occurred, then it’s harder to escape from. The genre has many examples of...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it is generally set in the present. There have been flashbacks and side tours (especially in the spinoff TV shows on Disney+), but, starting with "Iron Man," the narrative has only moved forward -- which sets it apart from popular franchises like "Star Wars" and the Harry Potter movies. Regardless of what you think about the current direction of the MCU, this is something of a blessing. There's nothing more stultifying than fill-in-the-gaps storytelling.
Of course, in a universe this expansive, it is tempting to wonder about what came before. The characters have had run-ins with creatures and beings who've existed for eons, but their origin stories are typically related in exposition dumps that stop the movies cold. The films tend to be crammed with incident; slamming on the brakes to explain who...

There's no disappointment quite as confusing as when a film gets canceled. It might happen suddenly, or become inevitable as a passion project suffers delay after delay. Then, when it does happen, it's usually because of shrouded problems behind the scenes or other powers beyond our control, like luck and timing. Suddenly, an exciting project ceases to exist. For hard-working artists and eager cinephiles alike, it's like a rug getting pulled.

Megan Suri was permitted to conduct this interview amid the actors' strike through Neon's interim agreement with SAG-AFTRA.
Megan Suri is a big horror fan, so when the chance to star in the new film "It Lives Inside" came, it felt preordained. "I grew up watching [the genre]," she tells Popsugar. She instantly connected with movies like "The Collector" and "Paranormal Activity."

Martin Scorsese is one of the greatest movie makers of all time, with titles such as “Taxi Driver,” “Raging Bull,” “Goodfellas,” and “The Irishman.” The Academy Awards think that highly of him, too. The "Guardians of the Galaxy" trilogy has reached its conclusion. There are unlikely to be more, with writer/director James Gunn leaving Marvel and joining Peter Safran to run the DC Universe. Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) will be back, as we learned at the end of "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," but the formation of the group we fell in love with has come and gone. The ragtag bunch of space misfits has certainly gotten into a lot of scrapes over the years, fighting villains like the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji), The Collector (Benicio del Toro), the Sovereign, Ego the Living Planet (Kurt Russell), and Thanos (Josh Brolin) alongside the Avengers.
Along the way, the Guardians have gotten all banged up during their fights, and some of the actors have as well. For instance, Chris Pratt's longtime stunt double Tony McFarr split his head open during a stunt on "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Filming is officially underway in Vancouver, Canada on our slasher All My Friends Are Dead, from Cinedigm (Cidm), Roundtable Entertainment, and Clay Epstein’s Film Mode Entertainment (Fme). THR first shared the news.
The 90s-throwback slasher stars award-winning actress Jade Pettyjohn (Destroyer) and international sensation JoJo Siwa in the newest film franchise from genre veteran Marcus Dunstan and Happy Death Day Producer John Baldecchi.
“All My Friends Are Dead follows a group of college friends as they head to the year’s biggest music festival. When they get a killer deal on an Airbnb, they waste little time celebrating their good fortune. Their weekend of partying quickly turns into a nightmare as members of the group are murdered one by one. When they realize that each of these horrific deaths corresponds to one of the seven sins, it’s only a matter of time before their number is up.”

In the mid-2000s, one of the main selling points in mainstream horror was the so-called Torture Porn scene. Emphasizing extreme violence, brutality, and relentless torture and suffering from its victims at the expense of traditional suspense and chills, the scene had a massive amount of mainstream appeal thanks to films like “Saw,” “Hostel,” “Wolf Creek,” and “The Collector” among others bringing about massive financial gain and audience acceptance which brought about numerous attempts throughout the world. After the Japanese effort “Grotesque” started the Asian countries jumping on the trend, Taiwanese director Kevin Ko tackled the genre with his debut feature “Invitation Only” which is now available on physical media from Unearthed Films.

Celebrated director William Wyler directed 19 feature films in 1927 alone. To put that into perspective, Stanley Kubrick directed 13 in his whole career.
Wyler is one of the more towering figures in American cinema, holding the record for the greatest number of Oscar nominations for Best Director at 12, and has won three times for "Mrs. Miniver," for "The Best Years of Our Lives," and for "Ben-Hur." Additionally, his films have attracted more Oscar attention than any other filmmaker in history; 13 of them have been nominated for Best Picture, and he directed 14 Oscar-winning performances. If you are playing Trivial Pursuit and the question is about records at the Academy Awards, William Wyler is likely your best guess.
As one of the tentpoles of Hollywood's Golden Age, naturally, Wyler was afforded access to the best actors and actresses, and seemingly had his run of whatever projects he wanted. Throughout the 1920s, Wyler paid his...

In the absence of a Golden Globe category for Best Horror Film, motion pictures that fit into the spooky genre have always had to compete as dramas, comedies, or musicals in order to win the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s highest honor. Even after eight decades, the list of horror or horror-adjacent films that have succeeded in earning Golden Globe nominations is strikingly short, but more examples could be added this year if HFPA voters warm up to comedic fright fests “The Menu” and “Nope.”
Mark Mylod’s “The Menu” takes place almost entirely on a private island where a sadistic celebrity chef hosts an eclectic group of strangers for dinner and, unbeknownst to them, their painful demises. “Nope,” the third original horror film from writer-director Jordan Peele, incorporates science fiction elements to tell the story of a brother and sister who are forced to defend their ranch from a destructive unidentified flying object.

Something fans my age have loved since their young TV-watching days was when their favorite characters would have a Christmas special. From Charlie Brown to the Brady Bunch, we couldn’t get enough of them once Thanksgiving was over. When it was announced that James Gunn had written and directed a Holiday Special for the Guardians Of The Galaxy to premiere on Disney+, fans were elated. What kind of presents and references did he pack into the special? Let’s run down all the Easter Eggs and references in the Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special.
Warning!!!! There will be spoilers for the Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special.
Marvel Studios Christmas Logo
As with any Marvel Studios project, the special opens with the usual Marvel logo as comic panels flip by. This time though, they have replaced all the panels with specific stories that referenced Christmas in the old comics.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has truly come a long way, from the days of Tony Stark fighting against essentially a disgruntled employee to becoming a franchise dealing with alien conquerors, ancient gods, and multiverses. Nowadays, every Marvel project feels like a massive event rather than a cool adventure. A decade ago, the past few years of Marvel movies would have felt incredible, but with the galaxy at stake every time, it is hard to feel like the films are building toward something incredible when every piece of the puzzle everything has high stakes. Worst of all, the MCU has mostly abandoned the smaller, hanging-out moments of earlier movies in favor of spectacle 24/7.
This makes the Disney+ Phase 4 era of the MCU all the more special. The TV shows have not only provided a great variety of stories in vastly different genres,...

From September 15th until October 30th, I’ll be watching at least one new to me horror film every day, and providing collections of capsule reviews week by week. On Halloween itself, as ever, I’m planning an all day marathon of some of my favourite horror films.
I hope you’ll find it interesting following as I dig further into a genre I’ve always loved, and maybe find some hidden gems along the way yourselves.
Week 1’s film can be found here
Week 2’s films are here.
The perils of Week 3 are just a click away.
Now… Prepare yourself for Horrorthon 4
The Collector (2009) Dir: Marcus Dunstan
Apparently, this was originally conceived as a prequel to Saw, but when the screenplay was rejected for that idea, it was re-jigged as a standalone, which has now received its own sequel, if not one that has birthed a franchise on the level of Saw.

The Downton Abbey star plays a believably sinister villain in an otherwise underwhelming tale of a judge with a horrific secret in his basement
There’s a believably devious turn from Hugh Bonneville at the centre of new hit-and-miss Netflix thriller I Came By, a film that sadly has very little else believable in it. He plays well-heeled former judge Hector Blake, who finds himself locked in a class-based battle of wills when socially conscious graffiti artist Toby (George MacKay) uncovers something nasty in his basement. Toby and friend Jay (Percelle Ascott) have gained notoriety in London for breaking into the homes of the rich and leaving the tag “I Came By”, but when Toby delves further into Hector’s home, he discovers something he’s unable to ignore. He calls the police but Hector’s connections and wealth make him an impossible target, leading the two into war.

William Wyler was a three-time Oscar winner who crafted several classics during Hollywood’s Golden Age, adapting his style to a wide variety of genres. Let’s take a look back at 20 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1902 in Germany, Wyler immigrated to the U.S. when his cousin, Universal Studios chief Carl Laemmle, hired him as an errand boy. He quickly moved up the ranks, directing shorts during the silent era before transitioning into features. It was with the advent of sound that he hit his stride, displaying an ear for dialogue that would serve him well in lofty literary adaptations produced by his longtime partner, independent mogul Samuel Goldwyn.
Wyler quickly became an Oscar mainstay, earning a record-breaking 12 nominations for Best Director: “Dodsworth” (1936), “Wuthering Heights” (1939), “The Letter” (1940), “The Little Foxes” (1941), “Mrs. Miniver” (1942), “The Best Years of Our Lives” (1946), “The Heiress” (1949), “Detective Story” (1951), “Roman Holiday...

Unhuman begins with title cards proclaiming it ”A Blumhouse Afterschool Special” and “Presented by the Student Teach Division (Std)”. That was the last thing I was expecting from a film by director Marcus Dunstan and his long-time co-writer Patrick Melton. While the three Feast films had their share of humour the duo are better known for more serious fare such as several of the later Saw films as well as The Collector and its sequel, both of which Dunstan also directed.
And it does begin like an Afterschool Special, Ever goes from dealing with her overprotective mother to being picked up by her best friend Tamra (Ali Gallo; Before I Go) who nearly hits Randall on their way to school. But...

The story that began with The Collector and continued with The Collection was set to become a trilogy with The Collected, which had been in production before shutting down back in 2020. It’s now been two years since we’ve heard a peep about the movie, leading us to wonder if it’ll ever be picking back up production. The […]

Arriving on digital this Friday, June 3rd, from Blumhouse Television and Epix is Unhuman, the latest project from Marcus Dunstan that finds a group of high schoolers on a field trip in a fight for their lives when things take a turn and they are confronted by a horde of blood-thirsty zombies. Co-written by Dunstan and Patrick Melton, Unhuman stars Brianne Tju, Benjamin Wadsworth, Uriah Shelton, Ali Gallo, and Peter Giles.
During the recent press day for Unhuman, Daily Dead had the chance to speak with Dunstan about his approach to the story for his latest tale of terror and how events from his childhood helped inspired him to take the less-expected route with the film’s storytelling. Dunstan also discusses working with his cast and crew and gives this writer hope that The Collective, the intended third part of The Collector trilogy, will eventually move forward at some point in the future after all.

Marcus Dunstan has been in the horror business for quite some time. Dunstan and his frequent collaborator Patrick Melton burst onto the scene as the winners of the third season of "Project Greenlight," which helped them make a monster movie called "Feast." Suddenly, the duo were the hottest new horror ticket in town, and it led to their writing of the latter "Saw" films, starting with "Saw IV." The duo have continued creating horror goodness, turning "Feast" into a trilogy, creating the popular film series "The Collector," the reboot comedy sequel "Piranha 3Dd," the Thanksgiving flick "Pilgrim" from Hulu and...

Ever since the first time I saw his film My Pure Joy I’ve always been interested to see director (and now producer) James Cullen Bressack’s “next” film. I’ve seen pretty much every horror film he has put out. Every One. I mean come on, I love the man’s work so much we tried to release a number of his films in the UK via our “Nerdly Presents” banner, an effort which saw Bressack’s Hate Crime officially make the banned by the BBFC list and To Jennifer make it out to VOD in 2o15 via the now-defunct TheHorrorShow.TV streaming service.
In recent years Bressack has tackled more mainstream fare, including a few Bruce Willis movies like Survive the Game and Fortress. But now,...
