John Carradine in his element
"An Evening with Hamlet" is an easily available episode from April 1954, and a boon for John Carradine fans (he had only just revived his Hollywood career after an absence of 7 years). A lifelong devotee of Shakespearean lore, the actor here (playing Shakespearean actor Cameron Whitfield) joins the Nelsons in an impromptu recital of "Hamlet" in the family living room, despite protestations from next door neighbor Thorny (Don De Fore), who believes his planned poker game will be endangered by Ozzie's absence. Guess who ends up dealing the cards? (Mary Woronov, his co-star in 1972's "Silent Night, Bloody Night," reported that, despite his crippling arthritis, the actor could still work wonders with a deck of cards). Carradine's first television exposure doing The Bard was a 1949 presentation of "Macbeth" on THE PHILCO-GOODYEAR TELEVISION PLAYHOUSE, and his last was in a lengthy 1983 video production titled "Antony & Cleopatra by William Shakespeare," starring Timothy Dalton and Lynn Redgrave in the title roles (Carradine appeared in one sequence as the Soothsayer).
