I know I'm late in discovering Futurestates and the interesting films they have to offer. But I figure that if I haven't seen them, some of you S&A readers likely haven't seen them either. And unless I'm mistaken, director Annie J. Howell's Tia & Marco, which premiered in 2010 and features Susan Kelechi Watson (Third Watch, Blackout, NCIS) and Enrique Ochoa as its leads, wasn't featured here on S&A. Here's the rather lengthy synopsis provided for Tia & Marco: The year is 2025. All U.S. citizens in good health are now required to serve one year in a government job, placed by lottery at schools, soup kitchens, highways, and borders. Tia Moran is six months...

Filmmaker Jerry Lamothe (Blackout, Amour Infinity) has released his award winning short film The Tombs, online, for all to watch. This, in celebration of his birthday (which was actually yesterday). The writer/director also publicly expressed his interest in directing the long-in-development Tupac biopic, which Antoine Fuqua was previously attached to helm, but later stepped away from. "It's certainly something I would like to campaign and be considered for. I seldom (if ever) pursue work-for hire gigs, and frankly, rarely ever care to. But this project in particular, I've been following it for a long time. I definitely wouldn't mind being on their short list, and sharing...

Long before the success of the short film, The Tombs... Many years before the hit independent film Blackout which would boast an ensemble that included, Jeffrey Wright, Zoe Saldana, Melvin Van Peebles, Latanya Richardson-Jackson, Michael B. Jordan and a host of other NYC notables. And before Nora's Hair Salon... There was Amour Infinity. Jerry Lamothe's debut film, Amour Infinity (A Brooklyn Love Story) was shot in 2000. In the movie, the odds are stacked up against Derek, a young East Flatbush, Brooklyn man (Jerry Lamothe). He's lost his job and his girlfriend of five years and the mother of his child just left him as well. Seeing no end to his streak of bad...

Update 4:30Pm: First, in response to my question below about who the actress is, Alison Willmore over at the mothership (indieWIRE) got the answer. The actress' name is Susan Kelechi Watson (photo with C.K. above). Not familiar? Neither was I, so I looked up her IMDb profile and saw that she's done a lot of TV, with parts in shows like The Good Wife, NCIS, Private Practice, and others. She's also done some work in film (she was in Jerry Lamothe's Blackout in 2007). Secondly, in Alison's piece, C.K. talked specifically about Watson's casting and the fact that she's black, stating: To me, the racial thing is like -- when people probably first see...

His short film, The Tombs, has been traveling the film festival circuit all year, and now award-winning director Jerry Lamothe is prepping to begin production on his next feature film, titled The Promise Keeper. Lamothe's last feature-length project was 2007's Brooklyn blackout-set drama titled Blackout, which starred Jeffrey Wright (also one of the film's producers), Zoe Saldana, Melvin Van Peebles, Michael B. Jordan, and others. The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and was very well received. He calls his next feature, The Promise Keeper, also set in Brooklyn (and Haiti, as well, post-earthquake), his "most...

It's hard to imagine a time without the ubiquity of Britney Spears, when tabloids didn't dissect her dating life or catch phrases didn't begin with "Oops, I ..." or "I'm not a girl, not yet ..."
The former Mickey Mouse Club child star skyrocketed to international infamy with 1999's "Hit Me Baby One More Time" and instantly iconic music video; an ascent to the pop princess title together with boyfriend Justin Timberlake seemed only inevitable. For a moment, Spears seemed on top of the world -- the most searched person on the internet in 2003 and America's sweetheart. But what a dramatic past 13 years it's been: from impromptu weddings in Vegas to K-Fed, the birth of her two children and her head-shaving, her spectacular, sparkly is-she-nude 2000 Vma performance and her baffling, world-weary showing seven years later, to the Vma Vanguard Award she received this year and subsequent tribute -- we've lived it through it all with Britney.

Lori WymanLori Wyman Casting, North Miami Beach, Fla.; Florida casting for 'Burn Notice,' 'The Glades,' 'Dolphin Tale,' 'Recount'i actually started out as an assistant in a talent agency. I remember trying to get a local casting director to see an actor. She fought me on it, and finally she saw him and he booked the job. That's when I knew I wanted more of a hand in the actual casting process. I left the agency business and started working in a busy casting director's office before I broke out on my own.I love actors. They're spontaneous and fun and playful. I'm more business, so they help me balance out. I have an excellent memory for names and faces. When I'm casting a project, I have to search the hard drive of my brain to reach for certain actors, and I love having to do that.
