The series was originally to be called "Kikiriki", Czech for a cockerel's cry. It was renamed after Ludwig van Beethoven, of whom the central character is a fan.

Made by father and son team Mirek & Peter Lang in their London house on a shoestring budget (although post-production was done by a third party company). The surreal humour and musical nature of the series proved surprisingly popular amongst British children when the BBC bought the show to broadcast as part of its childrens TV programming. The episodes were repeated regularly on the BBC for several years after.
Jon Glover, who narrates this show, would go on to be best remembered by UK TV audiences for his memorable character of Mr. Cholmondley-Warner, the spoof WWII newsreel presenter in the BBC's Harry Enfield's Television Programme (1990-92).
