Jeff Bridges came roaring back to our screens this year with perhaps his finest-ever TV performance in the FX drama “The Old Man.”
The series follows Bridges as retired CIA agent Dan Chase, who is forced to go on the run and into hiding after killing an intruder who broke into his home. He is hunted down by John Lithgow‘s Harold Harper, the FBI’s Assistant Director for Counterintelligence. Bridges and Lithgow, two veterans of both the small and big screens, excel here in performances that prove why they deserve their status as two greats of acting.
It is no surprise that Bridges is commanding in his role as Dan Chase. He’s an actor who always demands your attention on-screen and here is no different, whether muttering gruff dialogue or tussling as an aging man with a younger enemy. Bridges imbues Dan with weight, gravitas, a world-weary intelligence,...

Since making his screen debut at age eight opposite his father, Lloyd Bridges, on TV’s “Sea Hunt,” Jeff Bridges has enjoyed an acting career that now spans a whopping 65 years. His resume mainly consists of film roles, but he has occasionally ventured back to the small screen, most recently as the star of “The Old Man.” Having already picked up Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for his performance on the FX series, he is naturally one of the strongest contenders for this year’s Best Drama Actor Emmy. If his likely bid results in a victory, the Best Actor Oscar winner will join a distinguished group of leading men who were lauded by the film and then TV academies.
Bridges earned his first and only Oscar 13 years ago for his portrayal of recovering alcoholic country singer Bad Blake in “Crazy Heart.” He had previously...

Among the Emmy categories that “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” is looking to get nominated in, Best Movie/Limited Actor for its star Daniel Radcliffe is right at the top along with Best TV Movie. The Roku Channel’s hit telefilm may seem like an unconventional nominee, but there are several promising factors that are working in his favor.
The fact that the movie is a flat-out comedy could be viewed as something of an obstacle for it to overcome. But, performances from comedic-dramas have scored noms here, including Jeff Bridges for “A Dog Year” (2010) and Hugh Grant for “A Very English Scandal” (2019). We have also seen three comedy performances contend in this category: two for Ricky Gervais for “Extras: The Extra Special Series Finale” (2008) and “Derek: The Special” (2015) and one for Jesse Plemons for “Black Mirror: USS Callister” (2018).

The MCU has featured almost every A-list actor working in Hollywood from veterans like Robert Redford to up-and-coming stars like Simu Liu and Kathryn Newton. So, naturally, it’s easy to spot an MCU alum whenever you’re watching another TV show or movie — and this Emmy awards season is no different. Here are six MCU actors past and present who could be nominated for an Emmy this year.
Donald Glover — “Atlanta”
Okay, so admittedly Glover isn’t the first name you think of when you conjure up MCU actors, but he did feature in a scene with Tom Holland‘s Spider-Man in “Spider-Man: Homecoming” as Aaron Davis, who is actually the Prowler in the comics. Glover already has 10 Emmy nominations to his name and won two in 2017 for directing and starring in “Atlanta.” He’s back in contention this year for the same show and is predicted to pick...

Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston give communal lifestyles a whirl in Wanderlust.
Jennifer Aniston (Horrible Bosses) and Paul Rudd (Our Idiot Brother) re-team for the first time since the 1998 rom-com movie The Object of My Affection in the raunchy comedy film Wanderlust.
Rudd and Aniston star as George and Linda, a marriend couple living in New York City who decide to get out of town for a spell after George loses his high-stress Manhattan job. Hitting the road and heading down South, the unemployed couple stops at a seemingly normal bed and breakfast in Georgia that turns out to be a bizarre commune known as Elysium. Game for a change of pace, the two give the free-spirited, communal life-style a shot, but are they truly ready to trade in their city lives for an existence peppered with hippies,...

With the Oscars fast approaching, Oscar snub stories have hit a fevered pitch. Did those wily Coen Brothers snag Chris Nolan’s Best Director nod? Did female filmmakers get the shaft (again)? How did Scott Pilgrim vs. The World not score a single tech nod? (The answers are: No. Yes. The Academy is made up of geezers.)
While pondering these craftsmen left out in the cold of the award season spotlight, I couldn’t help but think on one particularly egregious snub – that of Jeff Bridge’s beard, a truly undervalued supporting player.
Let me be clear. I love Jeff Bridges. His lack of vanity makes him an absolute joy to watch, and I think he deserves all the accolades he’s garnered and more. I just feel he should admit his greatest advocate over the past few years, the collaborator whose added to some of his greatest portrayals, is his beard.

America Lost And Found: The Bbs Story (Criterion) Perhaps the best DVD box set released this year, this ultimate cinefile stocking stuffer offered up by Criterion, the Rolls-Royce of home video labels, features seven seminal works from the late ‘60s-early ‘70s that were brought to life by cutting edge producers Bert Schneider, Steve Blauner and director/producer Bob Rafelson, the principals of Bbs Productions. In chronological order: Head (1968) star the Monkees, the manufactured (by Rafelson, et al), American answer to the Beatles who, like it or not, did make an impact on popular culture, particularly in this utterly surreal piece of cinematic anarchy (co-written by Jack Nicholson, who has a cameo), which was largely dismissed upon its initial release, but is now regarded as a counterculture classic. There's no question that the biggest DVD and Blu-ray release this week is Christopher Nolan's Inception (with Shrek Forever After also likely to sell a ton of copies), but if you're looking to get some last-minute Christmas gift ideas, you might find a few other odds and ends hitting stores this week as well. Sandy Collora, director of popular fan films Batman: Dead End and World's Finest, has his first feature film Hunter Prey finally out on DVD today, plus the indie comedy Barry Munday starring Patrick Wilson and The Year of Getting to Know Us starring Jimmy Fallon. Some interesting non-fiction releases include Restrepo, Big River Man and Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel, plus the first volume of the Espn 30 for 30 series. All this plus Criterion Bd releases for Cronos and Videodrome, and for Reed Farrington, it's Trek Stars Go West! What will you be buying or renting this week?...

Chicago – “A Dog Year” flew under everyone’s radar when it debuted on HBO in September 2009, mere months before its lead actor went on to win the Oscar for Best Actor. Now headlining two of the most anticipated films of the 2010 winter movie season, Jeff Bridges is bigger than ever. But will that make audiences any more interested in checking out this forgotten “Dog”?
It’s difficult to believe this gentle drama was originally televised on HBO, since it’s hardly up to the channel’s formidable quality standards. This picture would feel more at home on a “Lifetime for Men” channel featuring feel-good bromances, tear-jerking sports dramas, and the occasional dose of Betty White. With its overly polished cinematography and blatantly manipulative score, this project could’ve become a mawkish dud in the hands of a lesser actor.

Hitting movie theaters this weekend:
The Chronicles of Narnia: the Voyage of the Dawn Treader – Ben Barnes, Skandar Keynes, Georgie Henley
The Tourist – Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie, Paul Bettany
Movie of the Week
The Tourist
The Stars: Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie, Paul Bettany
The Plot: An American tourist (Depp) finds his life in danger when a female Interpol agent (Jolie) uses him as a dupe to flush out an elusive criminal.
The Buzz: I’m having a hard time answering the following question: who would I rather spend a day with, Johnny Depp or Angelina Jolie? Sure, change the “day” to “night” and the situation would be simplified by hormonal trappings — but in all seriousness, these are two of the most alluring, charismatic, iconic “beautiful people” working in Hollywood today. Depp is mystifyingly cool, and a brilliant actor. I feel Jolie is about twelve steps below Depp in acting prowess,...

Shrek Forever After: "So, the story introduces Rumpelstiltskin (Walt Dohrn), who offers Shrek a one-day pass, during which he shall be free from domesticity. In exchange, Stiltz only asks for a mere day of the ogre's childhood. Naturally, Shrek jumps at the chance, but Stiltz antes up by claming the day Shrek was born, effectively erasing the titular ogre from existence and leaving him with a mere 24 hours to put things back where they should be, or he shall be erased completely. Now, Shrek is recognized by none of his former comrades, including his best friend, Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas), who has transformed into a fattie. Stiltz now runs the kingdom of Far Far Away (this is rationalized through a flashback, which presumes that Stilz lost a power struggle towards the beginning of the franchise and has yearned for revenge against Shrek all along...

6:30 So Kevin McHale of Glee was very nearly the first person "E!" has talked to that I remotely cared about. He's wearing a yellow bowtie -- I almost typed yellow boytoy -- Weird. I blame Madonna.
Glee Boys.
Kevin named Sally Field as his celebrity crush (!) and Brothers & Sisters as his favorite show. I hope he was conveniently forgetting this past season because it blew.
Moments before Ryan Seacrest was actually wishing Emmys on the Jersey Shore cast. I am so embarrassed for everyone. E! should have rechristened themselves S! for Shameless or Stoopid long long ago. But at least they changed their red carpet people and got rid of the silver haired pancaked makeup person.
6:40 Claire Danes looking gorgeous with relaxed hair and shimmery gown. A Truth: I sometimes wonder what Angela Chase would think of Claire Danes. It's not that...

Dennis Quaid, age 56, has been at this acting even since he had an uncredited role as a bellhop in the 1975 Jonathan Demme film Crazy Mama. Quaid is a bonafide movie star who hasn’t done a lot of television. But he’s been nominated for lead actor in a made-for-tv movie/miniseries for his portrayal of former President Bill Clinton in the HBO telepic The Special Relationship. His competition includes his co-star Michael Sheen, and Al Pacino (You Don’t Know Jack), Jeff Bridges (A Dog Year), Ian McKellan (The Prisoner) and his Special Relationship co-star Michael Sheen. Quaid spoke with Ray Richmond for Deadline Hollywood about why he’s enjoying acting more than ever now. Deadline Hollywood: How hard was it to get cast as Bill Clinton? Dennis Quaid: Actually, just the opposite. I went to have a meeting on it and thought I was all wrong for the part.

"Glee" star Lea Michele has all the reason for waking up early on Thursday, July 8. The nominees for this year's Primetime Emmy Awards were announced in Los Angeles by Sofia Vergara of "Modern Family" and Joel McHale of "Community", and it was unraveled that she was one of them.

The 62nd Annual Primetime Emmy Award nominees were announced earlier today, and not surprisingly, HBO dominated the list with the help of the Steven Spielberg-produced mini-series The Pacific, which earned 24 nominations on its own. A lot of the usual suspects turned up as they always do (Mad Men, Dexter, 30 Rock, The Office), but there were a few new faces this time around too. The Tonight Show With Conan O'Brien ironically earned a posthumous nod in the best variety, music or comedy series category, while Glee deservedly turned up in a number of the comedy categories, along with Modern Family. Lost also seemed to get a little more love than usual in its final season. There are a ton of different categories, but I've included a short list of the biggest ones after the jump. If you want to see the full list of nominees, head to the official website...

Chicago – The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences took our advice and embraced several new programs with today’s Emmy nominations, citing new shows “Glee,” “Modern Family,” “Nurse Jackie,” and “The Good Wife” as among the best of the last year. Overall, “Glee” scored an amazing 19 nominations and all but one of the major six players on “Modern Family” landed an acting nod.
The phenomenonal “Glee” landed nods in Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series (Matthew Morrison), Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series (Lea Michele), Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (Chris Colfer), and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series (Jane Lynch).

HollywoodNews.com: “Glee” fever is so strong that it swayed Emmy voters who lauded the TV show with 19 nominations. But that wasn’t the only show to catch their eye: HBO’s miniseries “The Pacific” harpooned 24 nods.
In years past, the Emmys use to favor those series which were on the air for seasons on end, often times honoring them later in their run. But in recent years, the organization has become open minded to frosh shows, evident in its embrace of Fox’s “Glee,” ABC sitcom “Modern Family,” CBS’ “The Good Wife” and Showtime’s “Nurse Jackie.”
That said, the Emmys continue to have its favorites, i.e. “Mad Men,” “Breaking Bad” and “30 Rock.”
The 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards will air on August 29 on NBC with Jimmy Fallon hosting from the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. For the first time in 30 years, the awards show will air live all over the nation.

It was a nod to the new and not much of a sendoff to the old that best describes the selection of 500-odd contenders for Emmy statuettes unveiled before dawn Thursday by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
The spunky Fox comedy-musical "Glee" and the off-kilter comedy "Modern Family" -- also produced by Fox but airing on ABC -- muscled their way into the key nomination categories, leading a number of fresh entrants into what in recent years had become a predictable parade of Emmy hopefuls.
Those two and several other mainstream newcomers to the fray also helped rebalance the scales between broadcast network fare and cable contenders, with the former contingent coming away with 247 total noms to cablers' 240.
The unflinching World War II mini "The Pacific," racked up the most noms for a single entry with 24, but its only competition is a well-mannered British period piece called "Return to Cranford...

In A Dog Year, the feature film directed by George Lavoo from Jon Katz's memoir, Jeff Bridges plays Katz, a midlife crisis-stricken writer who, impulsively and in an act of near-deliberate emotional self-destruction, adopts a rambunctious and unsocialized border collie, flying him cross country to his family's split-level home and their two other dogs. And while Lavoo's movie has its share of Beethoven-esque moments as the collie sprints down suburban streets or mischievously jumps rides on passing automobiles, the film is less about canine hijinks and more about the complex and unexpected emotional roles that dogs play in our lives. Bridges brings his customary outsized warmth to the character, but there's also a damaged and emotionally...

'Dogs do speak. They speak to us in our dreams.' While I was preparing to direct A Dog Year, based on the autobiography by Jon Katz, for HBO Films, I ran across that quote in a book of essays on the relationship between human beings and dogs. It struck a chord. Even though Devon, the dog in A Dog Year, is a regular canine, and no animatronics, doggie voice-overs, or special effects are used in the film, his role is to impart some worldly advice and wisdom to his confused and broken human companion. Surprisingly - or not - without any words, Devon gets his message across. Naturally, the next question is: Are the humans listening to what the dogs are telling us? The theme of dogs learning from humans, instead of the other way around, is not only the core of the movie, but I found it was...
