The Reno City Council voted in September 1999 to demolish the Mapes Casino and Hotel over the strong objections of area preservationists and historians. On the wintry Super Bowl Sunday morning of January 30, 2000, Clauss Construction imploded the building. It was the first building since 1949 to be demolished that was on the National Register of Historic Places.
According to the Fallon Evening Standard newspaper dated February 17, 1961, .....Ben Johnson, actor, will have the part as foreman of the yard. Johnson is well known in the valley. He was discovered by Director John Ford while he was participating in rodeos. He was working with Casey Tibbs and they rode matched broncos in the Methodist Men's Rodeo here (Fallon, NV) two years ago (1959)...... Johnson had left Hollywood in the fifties to return at rodeo, but did not make as much money as in films, so he went back.
The stockyard called "The Midwest Livestock Auction" is now called Nevada Livestock Marketing Inc. It is located at 1025 Allen Rd in Fallon, Nevada. The front still looks similar as of 2018 and the cafe is still named the "Feed Bunk Cafe."
The State Orphanage, also known as Sunny Acres, was closed and demolished in the 1960s. In 1959, the State voted to shut down the Children's Home in favor of building single-family cottages where children could live in smaller groups, unlike the large dormitory setting. This is some of the last time the Carson City historic building would be seen. The cottages still exist on the site although in poor condition.
