- Tod and Buz, driving through Nevada, pick up an orphan hitchhiking. Tod insists he be returned to the orphanage. Buz, both unhappy and angry, separates from Tod. On his own now, Buz looks to fill his loneliness and meets a motherly lady. He finds her sad life includes alcoholism over regret for a long lost son.—dubchi
- Tod and Buz have jobs working at a cattle auction house outside of Reno, Nevada. They, however, got the jobs independently of each other as they are no longer traveling together. The decision to break-up was made unilaterally by Buz after a philosophical disagreement concerning a ten year old runaway orphan they picked up on the highway. Tod, in good conscience, could do nothing but take the boy back to the orphanage, while Buz, who hated the orphanage where he was raised, could not abide by Tod's decision. Buz cannot totally turn off his friendship with Tod like a switch, while Tod wants to give Buz as much space and freedom to come to his own conclusions about their friendship and possible continued travels. In his loneliness without Tod, Buz connects with Hannah Ellis, a neighbor in the trailer park where he is living. His interest in her is not romantic, as she is old enough to be his mother, but as a person in dealing with what seems to be their collective loneliness. She is like the mother he never really had. But Hannah is facing her own current problems as well as a history with which she is less than happy, which Tod can see more clearly than Buz. Hannah may become the next sticking point between Tod and Buz, or a symbol who brings them back together.—Huggo
