Great Quincy episode.

Warning: Spoilers
Quincy M.E.: Speed Trap starts one one Sunday afternoon as Los Angeles coroner Quincy (Jack Klugman) & his laboratory assistant Sam (Robert Ito) are enjoying watching a Grand Prix on the telly, Kevin Bannon driving his Red Phantom car for the Reddon team is way out in from & miles ahead of anyone else. Then on one of his final laps Kevin loses control & crashes, Kevin dies from his injuries & ends up on Quincy's autopsy table. Apart from a small amount of amphetamines the autopsy proves Kevin died from massive injuries sustained in the crash, case closed. Then Kevins chief mechanic Chick Thomas (Simon Oakland) assures Quincy that Kevin would never take drugs, Quincy investigates further & discovers that Kevin had hypoglycemia & that the drugs would have made him pass out in his car which turns an accident into a murder...

Episode 2 from season 4 this Quincy story was directed by Ronald Satlof & after a the fantastic The Last Six Hours (1978) which opened season four the second episode isn't half bad either. Speed trap is a very murder mystery based Quincy episode without a moral message or social issue in sight which is just fine by me. There's pretty much everything here that I like about Quincy as a show, the humour, the now established relationships between the character's with the cast & crew having fun with them, Quincy's use of medical & forensic science, a fairly clever murder plot which isn't too obvious & all packed into a neat little fifty minute duration. The science on show here feels plausible although I'm not sure whether you could inject a rubber tyre with acid. The plot revolving around the world of motor sport & racing is pretty cool too & I love the scenes with Dr. Asten moaning at Quincy especially the garbage bag incident...

There's some on track location filming here, I have no idea which race track they used but it's a fair bet it's one in Los Angeles somewhere. The one thing that stood out for me in this late 70's production was how ugly & horrible the race cars looked, they are all ungainly square box like angles which don't look very aerodynamic or sexy at all. When compared to todays ultra sleek & stylish sporty race & Grand Prix cars there's no comparison. There are a couple of car crashes although I suspect that stock footage was used. The acting is fine by all involved.

Speed Trap is a great Quincy murder mystery based episode that has kept the very strong start to season four going & is almost as good as the previous episode the excellent The Last Six Hours, a must for fans & armchair detectives everywhere.

Unremarkable mystery episode focused on car racing sport
rayoflite2412 September 2015
Speed Trap begins at Danny's where Quincy (Jack Klugman) and friends are watching a car race on television when one of the drivers favored to win, Kevin Bannon, suddenly loses control and crashes. Kevin does not survive the accident and later Quincy conducts the autopsy at the coroner lab finding amphetamines in his system. Kevin's chief mechanic (Simon Oakland) cries foul at the findings and maintains that Kevin would have never taken any type of drugs due to his strict health regimen. Quincy begins to believe this assertion when he discovers that Kevin had hypoglycemia and with this condition the amphetamines would have caused him to lose consciousness shortly after taking them making it a possible murder.

This second episode of Season 4 is an OK one where there is a murder mystery featured but the plot is rather predictable. Right from the opening scenes where Quincy is watching the race and commenting on a particular driver you know that driver is going to crash and there will be an investigation into whether someone caused it. This coupled along with the stock footage of racing scenes used just make for an overall unremarkable episode in my opinion and certainly not one of the standouts of Season 4.

This one features one of the worst clichés you can find in a mystery show.

"Speed Trap" is not a terrible episode for the most part, however, one big STUPID cliché really knocks a few points off this one and make it a weak show overall. It begins with Quincy and his friends watching a car race on TV. Therefore, you KNOW that one of the drivers is about to die AND that Quincy will be autopsying the guy, pronto! And, that's exactly what happens. At first, the autopsy looks pretty routine, but the presence of amphetamines in the dead guy is puzzling, as his crew chief (Simon Oakland) reports that the deceased was a health nut. They eventually determine that the guy WAS drugged. But who and why? So what irritated me about this one? Well, in the middle of the show, a guy says to Dr. Quincy "...just let me qualify and then I'll serve you the murderer on a silver platter"--and you KNOW that the guy is dead meat!! And, no surprise here, only 30 seconds later he WAS dead and couldn't tell Quincy who the guilty party was! This is a HORRIBLE cliché and along with the other cliché I mentioned (the TV bit with his friends), the show came off as poorly written and full of clichés.

By the way, the normally intensely angry Simon Oakland was a bit of a disappointment for me. He was, uncharacteristically sane and level-headed! I was hoping he'd play the same sort of guy he usually played. Then, with him acting angry and irritable, he and Quincy TOGETHER would have been hilarious to watch!
