The first of three appearances for David Jason as Blanco.
In his 2014 autobiography "My Life", Jason claimed that Ronnie Barker requested him for the role off the back of his work on Hark at Barker (1969): "After my performances as Dithers, Ronnie knew I could play funny old farts and there was a character in Porridge called Blanco, who was meant to be a seventy-year-old prisoner whom Fletcher had a soft spot for and kept an eye on. Ronnie requested that I play him."
