- Quotes
Sherwin Caine: Beverly North.
Lt. Adam Tobias: Where'd you see her last?
Sherwin Caine: Oh, several months ago. We were very close for a while. Such a lovely girl. I'm not entirely surprised, though. She was very unpredictable. Especially when she drank.
Lt. Adam Tobias: Any particular reason you stopped seeing her, Mr. Caine?
Sherwin Caine: No. It just happened.
Joe Mannix: Her idea or yours?
Sherwin Caine: I don't have to talk to him. You know?
Kevin Archer: Look, Lieutenant, if you don't mind, Mr. Caine and I have work to do.
Lt. Adam Tobias: Sure, Mr. Archer.
[Archer nods]
Lt. Adam Tobias: Thanks for your cooperation, Mr. Caine. Joe.
Joe Mannix: You know, Mr. Archer, you really should do something about the people who work for you.
Kevin Archer: Why? I'm satisfied.
Joe Mannix: After those two foul-ups today? And the garage and on the road? You are easy to please. It's the old story, Mr. Archer. If you want something done right, you just have to do it yourself.
[Archer smiles]
Joe Mannix: Good night, gentlemen.
[he and Tobias leave]
Sherwin Caine: He's just trying to needle you. He hasn't got anything; nothing at all.
Kevin Archer: No. But he's right. I haven't got one good man. Not one who can find his nose with both hands. There's only one sure way to get rid of Mr. Mannix.
Sherwin Caine: Careful, Kevin. That temper of yours is going to get you into trouble. Just like it did Saturday night.
Kevin Archer: I told you about that. Now, nobody walks out on me. I told her if she got out of that car, it'd be the last thing she ever did.
Sherwin Caine: Well, I don't know. Going after Mannix yourself.
Kevin Archer: Oh, don't be stupid. Just get someone who knows what he's doing.
Sherwin Caine: Hm. In the meantime, Mannix is going to be busy.
Kevin Archer: Yeah. He's contacted everyone except George Bowman. He'll get there sooner or later.
The opening is classic Mannix as a lady is being chased through a garage by some maniac driver. There's a crash --but NO body? Garage chases were a staple in the series, just what all us kids back in the day loved. More over, it's a boy (Dennis) who hires Joe, played by Philip Frame. Dennis claims his mom and dad were talking about a murder, although they claim it was some tv show? Mannix naturally proves the kid right, but it comes with lots of bullets. This is rough stuff.
Robert Reed is back at Lt. Tobias, who the last reviewer noted looks kind of bored! Rosemary De Camp (one of tv's favorite moms and grandmas) plays Mrs. Henry. At the time, De Camp had finished playing Marlo Thomas' mom on THAT GIRL, and now played the grandmother on THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY.
Special guest star is author Jacqueline Susann (VALLEY OF THE DOLLS), who long before her career as a best selling author, was a stage actress, and a very good one. She was a popular guest on talk shows at the time, so it makes sense Barry Crane may have invited her to appear, playing the role of Claire Bowman. This is a very good part for her, and you can tell she is enjoying every minute.
Philip Frame played the boy (Tommy) in the cult film, THE RETURN OF COUNT YORGA. On an interesting production note, between takes Barry Crane, a champion bridge player, often played with Mike Connors and also Peter Graves on the set of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE. Jacqueline Susann would next make several appearances on LOVE, AMERICAN STYLE.
By the way, can you see the stunt man in Joe's car instead of Joe? Hmmm?
Neat late night thrills. SEASON 4 EPISODE 18 remastered CBS dvd box set.
