Rashomon Magnum
pensman5 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
The club is robbed and Higgins, Rick, and TC are somehow all dressed in robes. What happened to their clothes? Magnum listens to each of his buddies explain what happened but each account is quite different as the teller becomes the heroic figure at the expense of his pals. The retellings are quite fanciful and provide the humor for the episode but there was definitely a robbery and there had to be an inside man to pull it off. A minor series regular will be tapped as the guilty party but overall this is one of the fun episodes. And of course as all is revealed there is a bit of a curve thrown in at the end but it doesn't really go anywhere or add to the episode.

Dr Magnum!

Warning: Spoilers
Like Dr Phil show we have the Dr Magnum show. A character driven episode and the character makes I Witness one of my favorite episodes. The Magnum character once again needs some decompress time and watches the Tigers game with the time zone challenges. Likable, but sarcastic Magnum gets a call to work out and emergency. One of Higgen's events is robbed and Magnum has to listen to his three friends Rick, T C and Higs versions of the events. Hilarious, entertaining but a good story of events. All three friends versions has the the storyteller being heroic, swift, and makes the others look cowardly and picks on their friend's character flaws. Magnum over looks the colorful personalities, and looks at the consistency in the all 3 stories. Mangnum existentially figures out the players, and events to find algorithm to logically figure what happened. We never have the robe question answered lol. 8 stars.

This is one of my favorite episodes of Magnum it's basically Magnum doing "Rashamon".

I did like the beginning where we get a little sense of the culture of Hawaii where Magnum has to wake up around the middle of the night to watch a Baseball game. Which is true as certain programming in certain far off locales comes off at odd times. But one moment that was funny was when it get interrupted and Magnum sees it's another task he has to do. You can see in his facial expression he really doesn't want to do it, which is something I can emphasize where there is a new episode of "Battlestar Galatica" or "Game of Thrones" I've been waiting for six excruciating days only for bull crap to happen to make the wait worth nothing.

I really loved hearing each of the perspectives of Rick, Higgins, and T.C. It's just cracks me up how each of them are sort of making themselves seem like action heroes from Higgins a kung fu master and Rick almost like some tough guy archetype from a 70's TV show. While making the other characters seem weak. In a way it's sort of a common thing for most of us that have been though a bad situation and wishing that we did better or took control somehow.

But what I really like is how thought provoking the episode is as each of the stories provide little clues to the mystery, because each of the stories have small details that haven't changed. And as they say sometimes it's the smallest details that reveal the biggest truths.

However the episode I feel has a theme about the truth, how the truth can be complicated sometimes because of how obscured it gets from the different perspectives. But also about how the truth really is about how one perceives it.

Truth truly is a matter of one to many viewpoints.

Rashomon, P.I.

Warning: Spoilers
A superb episode of Magnum, P. I. that draws upon the legendary Japanese movie Rashomon by Akira Kurosawa, and with doses of humor for sure for the Magnum audience. The contrasts between the versions of Higgins, T. C. and Rick was something to behold, and reflected their biases that made me chuckle for sure.

It seems every three years (more or less) there's a user review of this episode, I Witness. The first was in 2012, then 2016, then one in 2019 and now my review. Hopefully there will be more reviews of this fine Rashomonesque episode before too long.

Magnum, P. I. makes the 80s very nostalgic from a Hawaiian perspective.
