- TriviaAlthough Wally never had a steady girlfriend during the course of the series, the two girls he dated most often were 'Mary Ellen Rogers,' played by Pamela Baird, and 'Julie Foster,' played by Cheryl Holdridge. This is the only episode in which they both appear.
- GoofsWhen Ward is looking through the mail, he says, "part time job at the soda fountain", but it's obviously dubbed.
- Quotes
Ward Cleaver: I saw Beaver out front. He tells me Wally's gone down to see about that part-time job at the soda fountain.
June Cleaver: Yes, Mr. Gibson, the owner, is making his decision today.
Ward Cleaver: Y'know, I think Wally has a very good chance to get it.
June Cleaver: Well I don't know why not, you know, he's very well-mannered, he's polite, he's conscientious.
Ward Cleaver: And he has his father's charm.
June Cleaver: That's right, but maybe Mr. Gibson will overlook that.
Ward Cleaver: [that night at dinner] Well, Wally, I'm sure proud of you getting that job with Mr. Gibson.
Wally Cleaver: Well, gee, thanks a lot, Dad.
Theodore Cleaver: That's neat, Wally, but when do you start being a jerk down at the soda fountain?
The Murphy's Law of stories. The high school girls stop by to oogle him, naturally practical jokers Eddie and Lumpy drop in to bug him, and it's all one, big happy family. This is also a very relatable story once again, as how many of us got summer jobs as kids and had jealous friends and awkward experiences to boot. What a life!
Credit the excellent writing to Dick Conway, a veteran of comedy, who later wrote the bulk of the episodes for PETTICOAT JUNCTION, also many stories for the MUNSTERS. Also, listen to the dialogue as it's spot on. The secret to real good comedy is dialogue and one liners that never stop.
This episode is chock full of classic Leave It to Beaver lines, especially designed for nasty Eddie Haskall. Actor Ken Osmond was truly a natural in this famous role.
Long time director Norman Abbott fronted this episode, behind the JACK BENNY SHOW, and other tv gems. With those credentials, you couldn't lose.
Enjoy this classic story. SEASON 5 EPISODE 6 restored dvd box set/Universal.
