I remember hating this episode when I watched in 1982 and 40 years later I still hate it. It's so ridiculous and hastily done that you just have to watch in awe at all the absurdity.
Out of the blue Shirley is getting married to someone named Walter who we've never seen or heard of before, yet Laverne comically exclaims to Shirley that "he finally popped the question!" Huh?!...Finally?! She had to have dated him barely a month so how does "finally" apply here?!....All I can think of is that the opening credits now say 1967, so perhaps this is yet another time jump into the future and we're a year ahead of when season 7 left off?! Who knows or cares at this point.
So the girls prepare for the out of the blue wedding and it's so hastily done that the wedding shower literally lasts 5 minutes with Shirley actually timing it with a stopwatch. Why did she do that? It made no sense.
Then there's Edna missing yet again for something too important for her to miss so at this point i'm just going to assume she died or Pop divorced her and she went back to Milwaukee.
The wedding itself was bizarre, and not funny bizarre...but weird bizarre. Why can't we see her husband's face?! This bothered me in 1982 and still does. What was the point of having him bandaged from head to toe and stay hidden from the audience?
Another review here incorrectly states he broke every bone in his body but Shirley tells Laverne he had a rash over 98 percent of his body. Either way it makes no sense to have him covered up like that.
I know by this point Shirley was leaving the show and they had to quickly find a reason to send her off, but it was all so terribly done and could've been done so much better. Hell, I could've written a better send off than that! I think they should've just pulled the plug on the series instead rather than keep it on life support the way they did. Zero stars for this sad, ridiculous episode.
