"The first snow of the season..." This episode is still pure magic!

"No ice-cream, no peace!!!" Both stories in this Hey Arnold episode are classics to me and they both brilliantly capture the spirits of the opposing seasons - the oppressive craziness that can come with an unrelenting heatwave, and the warm nostalgia of childhood wintertime. It's strange with these early episodes the things you can see that they dropped as the series went on. Like who was that strange Russian woman in the boarding house meant to be at the beginning? They never showed her again. And whatever happened to Mr Smith? Hmm... The Municipal Pool rules are pretty amusing if you can read them quick enough, like with the boarding house rules there's one that says "No Kids, pets ok." The best part of Heat is the breakdown of civilisation in miniature when all the kids mob the eccentric Jolly-Olly Man! Dan Castellaneta was always so hilarious as the minor character. Listen out for the messed-up ice cream tune the truck makes as they rock it! Although I think 'Heat' is terrific, to me it's really the 'Snow' part of the episode that matters. I love the beautiful and bittersweet music that is briefly heard right at the start and at the end. To me it represents that precious moment of youth when you're a kid and you're just really happy to be playing in the snow with your friends, and also, how all that kind of thing can fade as you grow up, but not in a sad way. For me the segment is a truly wonderful experience, and it's always stayed with me, it might be my favourite one of the whole series, really strong feelings throughout it. It will always have a special place deep in my heart... Things such as this are important in keeping the simple, most special parts of the past alive. All too often people just rush about their lives, and they forget to find joy and relaxation in the simple things. This short animation allows one to relive his or her childhood, if only for a little while. 💗
