The First World War has begun and Louisa makes it clear to everyone that the Bentinck and all the staff are at war with Germany. She also finds a very special place in which to hang the Kaiser's photograph. She is more concerned however when Charlie Haslemere enlists as an officer in the Coldstream Guards. She also arranges with Major Smith-Barton to have Starr's medals returned to him. In return, she agrees to take in a Belgian refugee who, it turns out, has experience working as a hotel porter and cook and is a particularly fine pastry chef. His presence doesn't sit well with the staff.
