Classy episode of a classic series
mike_elston17 July 2014
One of the best episodes of this classic British TV series, "Wheelman" has everything going for it: a canny script with some great lines and a fast-moving story, great parts for Barber and Brandon as they infiltrate a gang of jewellery thieves posing as a sharp crime writer (Makepeace looking at her best) and a drug baron's American getaway driver (Dempsey), a classy villain played by a classy actor (Tom Georgeson on top form) supported by a good cast of quality British TV actors (including Lois Baxter, Terence Budd, George Irving and Niall Toibin). There's a staged car chase and some good cars, the always excellent Ray Smith as the irascible Spikings (at one point posing as a taxi driver), and even an appearance by Acker Bilk and his Paramount Jazz Band, performing on a leisure boat cruising the Thames. What more could you want? Recommended.

Wheelman

It starts off with an appearance by Mr Acker Bilk in a Thames riverboat.

Pretty soon gangster 'Marocco' Jack (Tom Georgeson) is attacked by some rivals. That is one way to get a stranger on the shore.

Makepeace is there as an undercover crime reporter who manages to shoot some of them dead.

'Marocco' Jack is ex French Foreign Legion and has returned from France for one big job with his old crew.

Dempsey is in disguise posing as a getaway driver that the gang has hired.

Spikings isn under pressure to send Dempsey back to the USA. He wants a big result on this one.

The episode was written by Murray Smith who created Strangers and The Paradise Club.

This is a strong story with plenty of action. The stunt team is kept very busy. There are a few twists to the story as well.

'Marocco' Jack is actually rather charming, an old school lag. Spikings seems to have warmed to Dempsey.

One of the best episodes of Dempsey and Makepeace. All the actors seems to be having fun.

Plenty of action in this above average episode which is a heist story. Moroccan Jack is planning a heist, needs a wheelman - in comes Dempsey. Makepeace's cover is as a reporter and befriends Jack when she saves his life in the action-packed opening sequence. There's some nice twists.
