- Bibi Porter is a famous actress on Broadway. Mike Remington is a very successful stockbroker. They are married but separated. Mike is with their son Johnny at the park when the boy begs his father to let him live with him. Mike keeps his son beyond the mutually agreed return time and his wife tells him she is going to prevent him from seeing their son. Bibi goes to see the Prestons and is adamant - Mike will have no time with their son. The younger Preston sets up a meeting with her at the park so he can talk with Johnny. Preston brings his girlfriend - a social worker - to the meeting and she strikes up a rapport with Johnny. In his conversation with her, Johnny reveals that his father tried to commit suicide - an allegation which is confirmed by one of Bibi's friends. Any public revelation of Mike's attempted suicide would ruin his career and Bibi doesn't want to use it against him. The Prestons tell her that without it, she hasn't got a prayer of preventing Mike from seeing their son. Mike insists that the custody hearing be public since he is sure Bibi won't reveal his attempted suicide in a public forum. Bibi is hounded by the press and Preston's girlfriend keeps them away from Johnny. When the hearing starts going badly for her, Bibi authorizes Preston to go into Mike's attempted suicide. However, before he reveals it in his examination of Mike, Bibi becomes distraught and begs the elder Preston to intervene. The couple agree to reconcile not only for Johnny's sake but because they still love each other.
