Show Down: Part 2 (#1.22)

Warning: Spoilers
Diane is dating Sam's brother, but the problem is that she is more attracted to Sam. She comes over to say good bye and have the last attempt to have Sam admit his feelings. But he is refusing. Still the conversation they have in the back room leads to them both sharing their feelings and a great final scene kiss.

Well, they did it greatly. The whole scene where they play around the bush trying to make the other one confess is greatly written and performed. And it has some great lines such as "Do you know what it feels like to be attracted to somebody who makes you sick?". Besides that the scene when Sam opens the door and the whole bar is leaning outside listening was great.

Five of the Funniest Minutes in TV History

The give and take between Shelly Long and Ted Danson in this episode stands up to any amazing comedy team ever. Sam loves her, but the two of them are so stubborn that they can't do a thing. Two scenes. When they are arguing and they open the office door. Oh, my God. And the final scene of the season may never be topped.

Classic Comedy

The showdown between Sam and Diane in the final moments has to be one of the most intense and equally romantic sequence ever. Sam and Diane, the two polar opposite characters, fell in love with each other in the course of time. But no one is ready to be the first one to admit, thus their interactions turn into a humoring-counter humoring event. In the end, the writers end the season one in the most prolific fashion you could imagine. Gotta say, quite a surprise it was. A classic TV episode, that deserves more recognition.

It all leads up to this...

Warning: Spoilers
This is it - a perfect ending to a near-perfect season of TV. The audacity of what the producers were trying is amazing - a season-long story arc on a sitcom was unheard of at the time. Ending on a cliffhanger was also something sitcoms didn't do - let alone sitcoms with dismal ratings.

This episode neatly bookends the first episode, with Diane ready to rush off to start a life with a man she thinks she loves. Diane's confusion is genuine: Derek Malone is everything she ever wanted in a man, but he's not Sam. Sam, meanwhile, has realized he's in love with Diane even though she drives him crazy.

There's so much to like here: Coach's well-meaning but befuddled advice to Diane; the bit where two nice ladies go from ordering tea to ordering the hard stuff. Diane's multiple farewells to the whole bar. And then the last five minutes...

The climax of this episode is a two hander with the leads (with the exception of a single shot that brings down the house - it's when Sam opens the door to kick Diane out of his office). Sam and Diane go through a gamut of emotions, from love to hate, happiness to rage, finally landing on animal lust. It turns out They Will, but we'll have to wait until next season to see how that turns out. This is as great a season ender as the pilot was a beginning.

Season One

Gave this first season a legitimate try, but just couldn't get into it. Perhaps it needs to be watched "in its time", but the humor just didn't make me laugh enough to keep going much past about 10 episodes.
