The song played by Sam on the juke box and boom box was originally "I Fought the Law" but in the re-release of this episode broadcast on MeTV, the song was substituted, presumably due to television broadcast copyright issues. In streaming editions, the original song is intact.
In this episode, Norm states he's been going to The Hungry Heifer since college, however, in a recurring storyline in season 3, Norm mentions a new restaurant that just opened, The Hungry Heifer and his ongoing adventures there.
The owner of the Hungry Heifer is played by Sheldon Leonard. In addition to being one of the best known tough-guy character actors in movie and TV history, he also produced some of the most popular situation comedies ever. This role marked the next to last role he ever played. At the time he was a very youthful-looking 83 years old. Coincidentally, his most famous film role was as the bar owner in It's a Wonderful Life (1946).
When Carla returns to the bar from washing cars, she mentions the movie "Cool Hand Luke". This is a nod to Lucille washing the car in front of the convicts. In the Pilot "Gimme a Ring Sometime", Sumner Sloan returns to the bar in the middle of a debate about the sweatiest movie of all time. His suggestion/entry was "Cool Hand Luke".
It is revealed that barfly, Phil, drives a powder blue Cadillac.
