John Mahoney has a guest role as pianist/jingle-writer Sy Flembeck and he and Frasier have a scene together. Soon after, Kelsey Grammer (Frasier) and Mahoney were reunited as father and son on the hit series Frasier.
In this story, John Mahoney plays a jingle writer hired by Rebecca to compose an advertising ditty to promote the bar. In the Frasier (1993) story They're Playing Our Song (2000), a similar storyline is used, in which Frasier attempts to write a new opening theme for his radio show only for his father (again played by Mahoney) to come up with a pair of infinitely better examples.
All of John Mahoney's scenes were shot one week after the rest of the episode. The original actor cast for the role of Sy Flembeck walked off the set after the late-afternoon dress rehearsal, apparently overcome with stage fright, and did not return for the evening show taping. The producers made the decision to shoot the rest of the episode that same evening, and hold over Sy Flembeck's scenes until the role could be recast.
