- Sam and Diane announce to the gang at the bar that they are engaged, however Carla goes into deep denial about this news, which is her worst nightmare. Diane loves this one engagement ring, and so does Sam until he finds out the $5,200 price. Norm mentions to Sam in secret that he has a jeweler friend, the term jeweler used very loosely, who can reproduce the ring for a fraction of the cost at $1,200. Sam agrees with the ruse. After giving Diane the knockoff ring, he in turn needs to tell one lie after another to protect his secret, each lie costing his some money. After he figures he can no longer support the lie, he goes and buys the real ring, now having paid in total $9,000 for the real ring, the knockoff and all the items to support the lie. Afterward, Diane, without Sam's knowledge, finds out that Sam bought the knockoff ring. Diane however doesn't know that Sam has in turn purchased the real ring, which ends up causing some complications in their relationship.—Huggo
- After becoming engaged, Sam and Diane make their announcement to the patrons and workers of Cheers. The only one who doesn't take it well is Carla, who goes into a deep state of denial.
The talk between Sam and Diane soon turns to her engagement ring. Sam soon after inquires about it's price, but balks at having to pay $5200. Norm tells Sam of a contact he knows who can reproduce a copy of the ring for $1200. Sam decides to do so, but soon after regrets doing this. When Diane mentions that her insurance company would like the ring appraised to cover it under her policy, Sam finds himself in a bind, and purchases the real ring.
He manages to switch it with the fake one and thinks that his troubles are over. However, Diane intercepts a call intended for Sam from Norm's friend, asking about the copy. That evening, driving to dinner, Diane lashes out at Sam for giving her a 'fake' ring. Sam tells her that the one she is wearing is the real one that he eventually bought, but Diane refuses to believe this, pulling it off and throwing it out the window. This causes Sam to slam on the brakes, and a car behind them rear-ends them.
The two search a nearby gutter for the ring, but all appears lost. In the end, the two reconcile over their feelings and the lost ring...even though Sam's total costs have now come to over $9000.
Meanwhile, back at Cheers, Carla finally breaks through her state of denial, and screams out of frustration.
