Nick Tortelli was mentioned but never seen before this episode, and the producers initially wanted to cast Rhea Perlman's real-life husband Danny Devito as Nick. Devito was unavailable and Dan Hedaya was cast instead.
This episode marks the first appearance of Carla's ex husband Nick and his wife Loretta
Norm (George Wendt) mentions The Fairview in New Hampshire. The Fairview has been around since 1951 and does actually have a circular driveway. The Fairview has been a senior living facility the entire time and never an inn.
At one point a female bar patron says Cliff "used to look like Tyrone Power" (Norm informs her that she's thinking of a different Cliff). In a later episode Tyrone Power's son Tyrone Jr. would play Nash, Woody's wealthy rival for Kelly's affection.
The title is from the phrase that describes the relationship between men and women: The Battle of the Sexes.
