Will the Twilight movie boost the book's sales?

21 November 2008 5:08 AM, PST | From Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news

There have been a number of high-profile books getting the Tinseltown treatment this year from family fantasy such as The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian to historical biography The Duchess, from quirky comedy How To Lose Friends and Alienate People to classic literature Brideshead Revisited and there are even two on release from today – Body of Lies and Choke, but none have caused a stir like Twilight. Adapted from the first in a series written by Stephanie Meyer, the teen romance hits Us multiplexes today and true to the magic of cinema it is expected that the book’s sales will be given a boost by the big screen.

In the Us, Twilight is an established phenomenon with the four books in the series sitting pretty atop the bestseller lists but the publishers Little Brown Books are hoping to expand their readership. “I think it [the film] will definitely bring a bigger audience,

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader Will Get The Green Light Soon

15 November 2008 1:06 PM, PST | From Filmonic.com | See recent Filmonic news

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian was released earlier this year and made a nice profit. However the only problem was it made $300 million less than The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. That's not how things are supposed to work! Sequels usually make more than the first film, so it's not surprising that Walden Media…

Full Movie Nominees List of the 35th People's Choice Awards

10 November 2008 7:42 PM, PST | From Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news

On Monday, November 10, Joshua Jackson, Carrie Ann Inaba, Paula Marshall and Jay Mohr have announced the nominations for the 35th Annual People's Choice Awards. From the announcement, it is revealed that the movie categories have been dominated by blockbuster superheroes movies from "The Dark Knight" to "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull".

Leading the pack is "Dark Knight". The sequel of "Batman Begins" has collected multiple nods and has aided Christian Bale to receive four counts for Favorite Leading Man, Favorite Male Action Star, Favorite Superhero and Favorite On-Screen Match-Up. For the latest nod, Bale shares it with co-star Heath Ledger.

Despite the numerous counts it collected, "Dark Knight" is set to face strong competitors. Both Favorite Movie and Favorite Action Movie gongs put "Dark Knight" in a position to be up against "Crystal Skull" and "Iron Man". Its cast also have to compete with the cast ensemble of "Mamma Mia!

Studio Oscar Sites Updated with Scripts and Such

30 October 2008 4:22 AM, PDT | From Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Photo: Disney / Pixar Studios are ramping up to begin their major Oscar push and as a result it means they are setting up their "For Your Consideration" sites which gives Academy members (and us too) a chance to get more information on each film, what categories they are pushing as well as an occasional read of the script and a listen to the score. Several sites recently updated their pages and as you can see from the image above the Wall E push is full steam ahead. My favorite bit of news is the addition of the script to Vicky Cristina Barcelona to the Weinstein Co.'s Highlights site. Below you will get links to the award sites, links to each film here on RopeofSilicon and where it applies a link to each of the scripts currently available. Weinstein Co. Fan Rant: An R Rating for 'Slumdog Millionaire'?! Give Me a Break!

22 October 2008 7:15 PM, PDT | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

I thought it wasn't possible to view the Motion Picture Association of America's ratings board with more disgust and contempt than I already did, but they've managed to surprise me. Slumdog Millionaire, Danny Boyle's joyful, enriching drama about a poor young man going all the way on India's Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, has been slapped with an R rating for "some violence, disturbing images and language."

Speaking of language, the MPAA is full of s***. Big, meaty piles of s***. Slumdog Millionaire (to be released Nov. 12) has a couple of F-bombs (just like most PG-13 films), some moderate other profanity, a couple of intense moments, and some non-graphic violence. In fact, as Slashfilm's Peter Sciretta (citing Alex Billington) has pointed out, there are several instances in the film where Boyle has obviously cut away to avoid showing anything too strong. Clearly he had a PG-13 rating in mind,

Liam Neeson to explore ‘After.Life’

16 October 2008 4:40 PM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

Actor Liam Neeson is joining Christina Ricci in Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo's upcoming thriller “After.Life,” the Hollywood Reporter announced earlier today.

The trade says the flick centers on a young woman (Ricci) caught between life and death. A funeral director (Neeson) appears to have the gift of transitioning the dead, but may be intent on burying her alive.

Sounds freaky.

Ricci recently joined the project and replaced Kate Bosworth, who was originally attached to play the lead.

Neeson was last heard as Asland in “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.” He’ll soon show up in Oliver Hirschbiegel’s “Five Minutes of Heaven.”

And before I forget, Neeson is also in talks to play Abraham Lincoln in Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln,” provided the project will actually happen.

The Top 10 Summer 2008 Movies: It’s Been A Hell Of A Run!

30 August 2008 12:45 PM, PDT | From ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news

It’s almost September and that means that the big summer movie season of 2008 is finally over - but what a summer it’s been!

2008 delivered the kind of summer that superhero and action movie geeks dream of - this is the year that brought us three bonafide superhero movies: Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk and what was that third one… oh yeah: The Dark Knight.

We also had the chance to see the long awaited Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the latest Pixar flick Wall-e, Will Smith as a superhero in Hancock, Angelina Jolie as an assassin in Wanted, Hellboy II: The Golden Army. To keep us laughing we had Tropic Thunder, The Pineapple Express (which I haven’t seen) and Get Smart.

The Big Picture's Summer Box Office Post-Mortem

24 August 2008 5:19 PM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

With only one weekend left to consider for Summer 2008 - and considering it will only feature College, Babylon A.D., and Disaster Movie - this is the perfect time to reflect on the highs and lows of one of the biggest, if not the biggest, summer movie season ever.

Let's start by taking a look at the top ten films over the past four months, in terms of domestic box office:

1 - The Dark Knight ($500 million plus)

2 - Iron Man ($317 million)

3 - Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull ($315 million)

4 - Hancock ($226 million)

5 - Wall-e ($216 million)

6 - Kung Fu Panda ($212 million)

7 - Sex and the City ($152 million)

8 - The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian ($141 million)

9 - The Incredible Hulk ($134 million)

10- Wanted ($133 million)

The dollars might shift a little bit, but outside of Wanted and Hulk, no movies are poised to change positions at this point, and no other

Is It Time for Another James Bond Theme Oscar Nom?

21 August 2008 5:48 AM, PDT | From Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

Photo: Sony Pictures Kris Tapley at InContention brings up a good point with regards to this year's likely candidates for Best Original Song at the Oscars. "Talk about a wasteland..." He points out Peter Gabriel's "Down to Earth" from Wall E, Jennifer Hudson's "All Dressed Up in Love" from Sex and the City, "The Call" by Regina Spektor from The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian and the dark horse chance that Hamlet 2's "Sexy Jesus" would get a nod after a hard push by Focus. Tapley comes to the obvious conclusion based on the fact that no one is humming any of those songs at the moment leaving the field wide open. I left while the credits were rolling on The House Bunny last night, but I believe Katherine McPhee's "I Know What Boys Like" is an original track made for the film as it carries the film's original title.

On DVD Today: August 19, 2008

DVD Links: Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed Dexter - The Complete Second Season I already reviewed this second season of Showtime's "Dexter" and offered up quite a bit of praise, but as I say in my review, if you are interested in getting started with this show about a Miami blood splatter specialist doubling as a serial killer I recommend you first check out the first season because this is a show you don't want to jump into in the middle. If you have a Netflix Roku player you can check it out in the Instant Play as I did. Quick, easy and simple. I am not sure if this is a show you will want to buy however. As much as I enjoyed my time watching it, the second season character Lila played by Jaime Murray really hurts any chance of watching it over and over again.
