Hello again, and welcome to the recently resurrected Panel Discussion. I’m Kieran, and every week I’m going to go through some of the best comics of the week to give you an idea what you should pick up that you might have missed. This is another stacked week with some fantastic first issues and great jumping on points for books you might be behind on, so let’s take a look at what’s on offer.
In terms of big debuts, this week’s runaway hit is Kyle Starks and Gabo’s Dead of Winter #1 from Oni Press. Now, I have absolutely no idea about the franchise this is based on, I believe it’s a board game? However, this debut issue gives you everything you need to know which is namely 1) There are zombies and 2) There’s a dog that really hates zombies. I think we all...

You know things are getting dire on Mistresses when I’m referencing an Ariana Grande song title in my headline.
I mean, give me Jody Watley or Haley Reinhart or Beyoncé all day, every day. But the High Priestess of the High Pony? Eh. You can leave her discs in the 99 cent bin next to the supermarket checkout aisle, for all I care.

Endeavour delivers its most unusual case yet, in an emotionally satisfying episode that's rewarding for long-time Morse viewers...
This review contains spoilers.
3.3 Prey
When Ingrid Hjort (Eleanor Williams) goes missing after an evening out, the police can find no trace of the Danish au pair. Her employer, widowed scientist Dr Hector Lorenz (Milo Twomey) claims to know nothing about her disappearance, while her fellow students at the night school she attended are similarly clueless. Thursday’s convinced that the presumed murder is linked to the vicious attack in 1963 that left another young woman in a coma, but in the absence of Ingrid’s body, nothing can be proved.
The investigation soon takes a turn for the macabre when a man’s severed arm is retrieved from the river. The victim, Ricky Parker (David Burnett) was having fun on the riverbank at night with friends when he disappeared without a trace.

In a novel effort to stress that film noir wasn’t a film movement specifically an output solely produced for American audiences, Kino Lorber releases a five disc set of obscure noir examples released in the UK. Spanning a near ten year period from 1943 to 1952, the titles displayed here do seem to chart a progression in tone, at least resulting in parallels with American counterparts. Though a couple of the selections here aren’t very noteworthy, either as artifacts of British noir or items worthy of reappraisal, it does contain items of considerable interest, including rare titles from forgotten or underrated auteurs like Ronald Neame, Roy Ward Baker, and Ralph Thomas.
They Met in the Dark
The earliest title in this collection is a 1943 title from Karel Lamac, They Met in the Dark, a pseudo-comedy noir that barely meets the criteria. Based on a novel by Anthony Gilbert (whose novel...

Dead of Winter (Dci Andrew Fenwick) by Elizabeth Corley When a girl goes missing from boarding school in the dead of winter, the police find their attempts to find her hampered by unhelpful teachers and pupils. Convincing them of the urgency of the situation takes more time that Superintendent Andrew Fenwick would have liked, especially since it means stepping on the toes of the local police force into the bargain. But when high profile families are concerned, anything can happen. It soon becomes apparent that the situation is much more complex than anyone could have imagined. Hints of an abusive […]...

The accomplished gamemakers over at Plaid Hat Games have created some wonderful experiences, from Summoner Wars to Bioshock Infinite: Siege of Columbia, and let's not forget my favorite, Mice and Mystics, so any news of a new product from them is good news. That said, Dead of Winter sounds especially fun, blending survival instincts, physiological battle, and the ever-popular zombie horde. The game is up for pre-order right now at a significant discount, so if any of the above interests you, I'd get on that deal soon.
Designed by Isaac Vega and Jon Gilmour, the game takes place in a very Walking Dead-ish world where humanity is battling for survival against normal things like hunger, disease, and lack of resources, on top of, you know, the creepy things trying to bite you all the time. The game allows 2 to 5 people to work together toward their common goal, but with a twist.

Formed in 2011 by Sal Abruscato, co-founder (with the late, great Peter Steele) of the gothic metal giant Type O Negative and drummer on many of Type O's most legendary releases like Bloody Kisses, A Pale Horse Named Death carries over many of that band's themes of gloom, doom and darkness... and death, obviously. Sal joined forces with Matt Brown, guitarist for Seventh Void, in a partnership he described as a “murdering evil version of Lennon and McCartney,” and the colossal result was the band's debut album And Hell Will Follow Me. Accompanied by an ominously beautiful art booklet created by acclaimed artist Sam Shearon (whose credits include illustrations for H.P. Lovecraft's Call of Cthulhu and promo art for Rob Zombie and Kiss), that record was a haunting showcase of low, heavy and horror-infused hard rock with a classic horror vibe. While the lyrical themes were steeped in grand-scale horror imagery,...

Back in April, Discovery’s Deadliest Catch returned with a season 8 premiere that also marked the Emmy-winning series’ 100th episode. Teasing the season ahead, exec producer Thom Beers reported that we’d see one man go overboard — at the dock. “The last time that happened it was to Johnathan Hillstrand ,” Beers recalled. “They decided to celebrate Halloween early because they’d be at sea, and Johnathan was pretty hammered. One of the crewmen was dressed as Spider-Man, and Johnathan says, ‘All I remember was Spider-Man reaching down and pulling me out of the ocean.’ Just the insanity of it,” he said,...
