This article contains spoilers for Psych.
It’s easy to forget sometimes that Psych is a show that often involves murder. The procedural comedy-drama is well known for its running gags, irreverent humor, and the absurd scenarios that faux psychic Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodriguez) and his best friend/crime-solving partner Gus (Dulé Hill) often found themselves in, all of which can overshadow the seriousness of the crimes they’re trying to solve. However, the series proves it’s worthy of the drama genre descriptor more often than we realize when it allows itself to go to darker places than we expect.
The most obvious example of this in the series is the Yin/Yang arc. Shawn and Gus go up against these serial killers several times throughout the series, and often find themselves and those they care about directly in harms’ way. Like many serial killers, Yin (Peter Weller...

Louis Gossett Jr., who won a supporting actor Oscar for playing the hard-as-nails drill instructor in 1982’s “An Officer and a Gentleman” a few years after winning an Emmy for his role as the cunning Fiddler in “Roots,” died early Friday morning. He was 87.
Gossett’s family announced his death in a statement, writing: “It is with our heartfelt regret to confirm our beloved father passed away this morning. We would like to thank everyone for their condolences at this time. Please respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time.”
In Taylor Hackford’s “An Officer and a Gentleman,” Gossett’s Sgt. Emil Foley memorably drove Richard Gere’s character to the point of near collapse at a Navy flight school. Gossett was the first Black man to win the best supporting actor Oscar for that role.

You can’t teach someone to be an artist; as Steven Soderbergh once noted, if you could “we’d all be Stanley Kubrick.” Yet you can teach the craft necessary for artists to express themselves, and in the case of many of the books that follow, you can provide the inspiration necessary to unlock an artist’s best and most exciting ideas. Here are 13 must-read volumes for any aspiring director, books that examine the job from a variety of technical, artistic, and logistical angles. Some are more nuts-and-bolts manuals on how to use the camera, others — the ones written by working directors like Bethany Rooney, Mary Lou Belli, and Ken Kwapis — survival guides for anyone who wants to sustain a career in the industry. Taken together, they provide a comprehensive look at what it takes to direct and arm filmmakers with the tools they need to succeed.

Grey’s Anatomy is traditionally one of Netflix’s most-watched acquired programs, so it’s only natural that the streaming giant enters the medical procedural space on its own.
Netflix has handed out a series order to Pulse, what it says is its first procedural medical drama series. The series, which is created by Zoe Robyn (The Equalizer), is set at Miami’s busiest Level 1 Trauma Center as they navigate medical emergencies and revolves around Dani Simms, a young ER doctor who is unexpectedly promoted to chief resident amid the fallout of her own provocative romantic relationship. Justina Machado returns to Netflix after starring in its One Day at a Time update and stars as Natalie Cruz, a doctor who serves as chair of surgery and emergency medicine.
Robyn and Carlton Cuse (Lost, Jack Ryan, Netflix’s own Locke and Key) will serve as co-showrunners. Both will exec produce the series.

A "Suits" comeback wasn't on anyone's 2023 Bingo card, yet it was a huge year for the USA Network lawyer series. When the show dropped on Netflix last June, it became one of the streamers' biggest hits, reportedly accruing 3 billion minutes watched every week for much of the summer. The series' creator, Aaron Korsh, suspected its resurgence had something to do with the show's relatability and "inherent optimism," as he told The Hollywood Reporter in August 2023. But the show's cast could have also had something to do with it: future ex-royal Meghan Markle starred in the legal procedural for its first seven seasons alongside leading men Patrick J. Adams and Gabriel Macht.
When "Suits" started, USA Network seemed to have already established a pretty standard formula for success: cast hot people, write fast-paced scripts, and keep storylines adventurous. It worked for shows like "Burn Notice" and "Psych," and given the longevity of "Suits,...

Psych fans may already have heard rumblings about a fourth Psych movie. Timothy Omundson, who played Carlton Lassiter in the original USA series and three follow-up movies, says the team is just waiting for the greenlight from Peacock. “To my knowledge, certainly there’s a fourth script in place and ready to go,” the Percy Jackson and the Olympians star tells TV Insider, echoing what writer and star James Roday Rodriguez previously shared about Psych 4‘s development. “[Creator] Steve Franks and James Roday Rodriguez were able to write that one before the strike hit. So that was delivered to the network, and I believe it’s sitting on Peacock’s desk. Just waiting for the greenlight to happen, is what I’ve been told. Characters will soon be welcome at USA Network once again.
In light of the recent streaming success of several 2000s-era USA originals — most notably Suits, which dominated Netflix earlier this year, ultimately inspiring a Los Angeles-based spinoff — the network is getting back in the scripted series game, our sister site Deadline reports.

Exclusive: USA Network’s “blue sky” series of the 2000s and early 2010s are having a moment this year between Suits‘ blockbuster run on Netflix, which broke streaming records and led to a potential offshoot series at NBC, and the Monk reunion movie, which premieres today on Peacock and already is getting awards recognition.
Now the brand is making its way back to where it started, on the USA Network. NBCUniversal’s ad-supported cable net is plotting a return to original scripted programming with light, frothy character-based procedurals in the mold of the lineup from the “blue sky”era that included Monk, Burn Notice, Psych, Royal Pains, White Collar and Suits, Deadline has learned.
After the end of the WGA strike, NBCU scripted executives put out feelers about their USA plans and already have identified a handful of ideas they are considering for development but there are no deals yet,...

Plot: Monk returns to solve one last, very personal case involving his beloved stepdaughter Molly, a journalist preparing for her wedding.
Review: Running for eight years on USA, Monk held the title of the most-watched scripted series in cable history until the debut of The Walking Dead. Wrapping up in 2009, Adrian Monk returned briefly in a Covid-19 short showing the Ocd detective coping during the lockdown. Now, fourteen years after the series finale, Monk returns in his first full-length mystery, Mr. Monk’s Last Case. Reuniting the four main stars and a couple of key supporting players, Mr. Monk’s Last Case follows the detective getting back into the groove as he investigates a murder that hits very close to home. Setting up potential future standalone mystery films led by Tony Shalhoub, this is a decent story that plays more like an extended episode of the series rather than a fully realized movie.

It’s like they forgot. Back in 2005, USA introduced the slogan “Characters welcome” which celebrated the network’s “blue sky” programming. Dramas like Suits, Burn Notice, Psych, Royal Pains, and Monk were emblematic of the kind of optimistic series that dominated USA’s lineup. Yes, there was drama, but not the gritty kind; the characters were flawed, but not in a dark disturbing way; and the series were entertaining, but not so complex that you needed a flowchart to keep track of all the characters.

"The Amityville Horror" is one of the definitive haunted house films, a classic tale about paranormal activity terrorizing a suburban family with swarming flies, mysterious voices, and sudden illness. Even the windows resemble ominous eyes peering down on the unsuspecting victims. The movie taps into the religious undertones popularized by other 1970s releases such as "The Exorcist" and "The Omen," suggesting there is a Satanic force at work that must be destroyed.
Eventually, the new owners George and Kathy Lutz discover the horrifying history of their new home: Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered his entire family with a rifle one year prior, a Satanic worshipper named John Ketchum once lived on the land, and the house itself was built on a Shinnecock burial ground.
Despite receiving mixed reviews for elements like the cheesy portrayal of a possessed George, "The Amityville Horror" ended up having a significant impact on the horror genre.

Crazy Legs Features has nabbed film rights to The Most Beautiful: My Life with Prince, the bestseller from Mayte Garcia, chronicling her romance with the iconic musical artist, for development as a scripted biopic. With the WGA strike in the rearview mirror, the company is now in search of a writer to pen the adaptation.
The first wife of the superstar born Prince Rogers Nelson, Mayte’s bestseller offers a perspective on Prince through their intensely personal relationship that shows a depth and nuance never revealed of the famously private and beloved artist. The book’s title is inspired by the hit song Prince wrote about their legendary love story that started backstage at a concert. What began as a friendship between two artists blossomed into a romance, thrived as a fairytale from their wedding day, and then struggled due to the devastating losses that ultimately ended their marriage in 2000. One of the USA Network's most beloved television series is "Monk," which aired from 2002 to 2009. A police procedural comedy owing a lot to Sherlock Holmes (but set in 2000s San Francisco), the show followed Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub). A detective with crippling obsessive-compulsive disorder (Ocd) and social anxiety, Monk was once a police officer but retired after the death of his wife Trudy. He semi-comes out of retirement years later as a private consultant and that's when the series begins. Thanks to his performance as Monk, Shalhoub won three Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series, and the finale ("Mr. Monk and the End") broke cable ratings records.
In 2020, Shalhoub and his castmates starred in a mini-reunion for Peacock, "Monk In Quarantine." Monk, an infamous germaphobe, goes the extra mile with safety precautions during the Covid-19 pandemic while his friends check in on him over Zoom. Evidently,...

"Suits" started streaming on Netflix in June just when summer was kicking off this year. Since then, it has become one of the most watched shows of the modern era, amassing over 3 billion "watch minutes" per week over most of the summer. The dramedy series about the inner workings of a top law firm was a steady fan favorite hit for USA Network over nine seasons, garnering good reviews and consistent ratings. "Suits" ended its memorable run in 2019 and, since then, it hasn't necessarily occupied a ton of real estate in the minds of mainstream audiences. Until now.
Everyone, and I mean everyone, is rediscovering "Suits" all over again and there are also plenty of newly minted fans out there that are finding out just how watchable this show can be for the very first time. Chris McCumber, the president of Blumhouse Television, has left the company. The well-respected leader was president of the division for three years.
Current president of production Jeremy Gold will step in as interim head of the company. Gold is not expected to take over the position long-term, and the search for a new president is ongoing. During this transition, Blumhouse TV will also rely on scripted head Chris Dickie.
McCumber’s exit has happened as layoffs have impacted the creative and business affairs departments of Blumhouse TV. Fewer than 10 employees were laid off, TheWrap can confirm. Altogether, there are roughly 100 people in the company.
The unscripted division of the company remained intact as did Blumhouse’s shared services groups. Those include production, casting, Hr, marketing and finance.

For a horror fan, the month of October is naturally designated for everything related to Halloween. So this month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies that take place on or around October 31st. As usual, though, these selections can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s Halloween-themed offerings include zombies, witchcraft, killers, and more.
The Midnight Hour (1985)
Image: The Midnight Club (1985)
Directed by Jack Bender.
The Midnight Hour is a great warm-up for the Halloween season, right before diving into heavier or scarier movies. This telefilm originally aired on ABC, then later showed up on cable. While it didn’t open to rave reviews, it has certainly found an audience over the years. The plot is simple enough: teens fool around with magic and accidentally raise an evil sorceress on Halloween. As the night goes on, the town is taken over by ghouls and monsters.

Time is the measure of success or failure in the streaming world. Gal Gadot’s “Heart of Stone” earned 143 million hours in its first 10 days of Netflix availability. That fell short of Chris Hemsworth’s “Extraction 2” and Jennifer Lopez’s “The Mother,” which each notched 175 million-178 million hours in that same time period. All three movies, along with Zack Snyder’s upcoming two-part film “Rebel Moon,” represent a swiftly disappearing notion in the streaming world: The big-budget, English-language streaming movie is becoming a comparative rarity.
As one industry executive told TheWrap, “Peak streaming is over, Wall Street no longer loves it.”
Compared to just a couple of years ago, the sheer amount of direct-to-streaming movies has plummeted. Netflix, which pioneered big-budget streaming movies, will release just above 40 English-language films in 2023, compared to 75 in 2022. Insiders and analysts blame a change in financial tune. In “Subspace Rhapsody,” the penultimate episode of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” second season, a mishap involving a recording of Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes” and a “subspace fold” causes what the franchise’s technobabble labels an “improbability field:” a glitch in reality that forces the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise to behave like they’re in a musical, bursting into song at inopportune times. Immediately after the big stage-setting ensemble number, Captain Pike (Anson Mount) holds a meeting to figure out what happened, and security officer La’an (Christina Chong) rolls her eyes and asks “What’s next? More improbability, or will we suddenly just poof into bunnies?”
The joke, in the context of the episode, feels slightly random and out of step with the show’s typical sense of humor. But for anyone who has ever watched “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” the reference to bunnies instantly...

Now that he’s done with A Million Little Things, James Roday Rodriguez has more time for other projects — including, if all goes well, a fourth Psych movie. The very nature of being a working actor in the film and television industry means that you're bound to work with some of the same folks more often than not. As a result, reunions both expected and unexpected tend to occur. For an example of the former, check out the episode of "Psych" entitled "Dual Spires," which reunited several cast members from "Twin Peaks" long before "The Return" happened. For an example of the latter, take Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who appeared in 2014's "Godzilla" as husband and wife and then followed that up by appearing in 2015's "Avengers: Age of Ultron" as brother and sister.
In the latest season of the Star Wars series "The Mandalorian," which just wrapped up recently on Disney+, a reunion of former co-stars occurred that was wholly unplanned: Giancarlo Esposito and Charles Baker, both veterans of the groundbreaking AMC crime saga "Breaking Bad.
