Facing the Past was a nice documentary of the surviving cast and writer of A Face in the Crowd
This short documentary is about not only what it was like making A Face in the Crowd but also the experiences of the Hollywood/Communist witchhunts of writer Budd Schulberg and director Elia Kazan and the effects of their decisions to eventually testify and name names. Schulberg recounted here about how he came to collaborate with Kazan after they both did what they did, first on On the Waterfront then on the film I mentioned at the beginning of this review. Players Andy Griffith, Patricia Neal, and Anthony Franciosa also recount their experiences with the director with a particularly funny one from Griffith about one piece of advice concerning a scene with Ms. Neal that starts with the letter "F"! There's also some nice comments about fellow player Walter Matthau who died before this was made. So since I've seen this thing that's on the DVD of the movie, I think I'll watch that now...
