Within the last decade, Mark Ruffalo has collected many film and TV acting trophies – including an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and three SAG Awards – but has yet to win the favor of the Critics Choice Association despite receiving numerous nominations from them across multiple categories. Although he has had the least luck in their Best Supporting Actor contests, his inclusion in 2024’s could finally lead to a positive outcome. Either way, the “Poor Things” cast member will at least finish this awards season having made history as the first man to ever compete for this featured performance prize four times.
On his previous three Best Supporting Actor bids for “The Kids Are All Right” (2011), “Foxcatcher” (2015), and “Spotlight” (2016), Ruffalo was respectively bested by Christian Bale (“The Fighter”), J.K. Simmons (“Whiplash”), and Sylvester Stallone (“Creed”). The eight-year gap between his two most recent notices is one of the largest in this category’s history,...

Fandoms everywhere can now rejoice, for in October Our Flag Means Death finally returns to our screens for its second season. Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi will be romancing the high seas once more thanks to an enormous outpouring of love and support from the show’s fans. The safety of the cult favorite is not yet known beyond season two, but if this one is as good as the first, it certainly won’t be for lack of trying.

Tom Hanks has engaged in a few love scenes in his long and historic career. But some of his love scenes were cut in one of his biggest films, which somewhat disappointed the star.
How Tom Hanks responded to his love scenes being cut Tom Hanks | Taylor Hill/FilmMagic
Some of Hanks’ biggest movies were the Da Vinci Code films. Hanks played the lead in the series’ three movies, including the second film in the trilogy Angels & Demons. But some noticed that the movie was missing a few love scenes that were supposed to be included. In a 2009 interview with Parade, Hanks explained why his love scenes with co-star Ayelet Zurer couldn’t make the film.
“We really don’t have time to make out or go to bed when Cardinals are being killed on the hour. We tried to work it into the screenplay over and over again,...

Take a gander at the last 40 years of cinema, and you’ll find at least one universal truth: The people love Tom Hanks.
The 66-year-old actor is known around Hollywood and the world as an affable everyman, with as much capacity for heady drama as he has a knack for quippy comedy. Hanks’ most famous roles range from the light and whimsical to the darkly complex. He’s also responsible for delivering lines in some of cinema’s most quotable movies, including “A League of Their Own” (“There’s no crying in baseball!”) and “Apollo 13”.
Hanks cut his teeth as a stage actor, performing Shakespeare and other plays in his hometown of Lakewood, California for much of the late ’70s. At 24-years-old, Hanks made his first movie appearance as a flirty jogger in the slasher “He Knows You’re Alone” before starring opposite Daryl Hannah in Ron Howard’s romantic...

Tom Hanks has weighed in on the Writers Guild strike, saying that “like minds” are going to have to come together for the “common good” of the industry. Promoting his new book on CBS Mornings, Hanks was asked by co-host Gayle King about the strike, which is now in its second week.
“The entire industry is at a crossroads, and everybody knows it,” he said. “The financial motor has to be completely redefined. And there is some degree of pie here that is going to have to be equitably distributed by the people who are responsible for the content – not the folks who make the deals for the content, the folks who actually make it.

So many great stories in history start out with the key players hating each other — as it is in Netflix and A24’s “Beef,” streaming on Netflix in April. Amy (Ali Wong) and Danny (Steven Yeun) meet via parking lot bump turned action-movie car chase, their lives connecting and their road rage lingering in weeks and months after the incident. In reviewing the series, IndieWire’s Ben Travers said that “’Beef’ does a fine job balancing Amy and Danny’s practical intelligence and impractical passions; their bitterness toward the other driver ebbs and flows as their personal lives better or worsen, and it’s in these moments that the half-hour drama thrives.”

Having already won a Golden Globe and a BAFTA Award for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in “Elvis,” Austin Butler is on a solid path to triumphing on his first Oscar nomination. His film, which covers the entirety of the titular rock star’s two-decade career, boasts a talented cast that includes past Oscar winner Tom Hanks, who collected back-to-back Best Actor trophies for “Philadelphia” (1994) and “Forrest Gump” (1995). He missed out on a supporting bid for “Elvis,” but if Butler clinches the lead award, Hanks will become the 15th man to have acted in a film that won the same Oscar he previously received.
Hanks has a total of five Best Actor nominations to his name, with the three unsuccessful ones having come for his work in “Big” (1989), “Saving Private Ryan” (1999), and “Cast Away” (2001). Until Butler was recognized for “Elvis,” Hanks had never appeared in a film for which someone...

When an actor better known for good guys plays against type, I always look for the wink. Not a literal wink, of course, but that little moment that says: "Don't worry, guys! It's me, I'm only acting!"
Henry Fonda never winked when he gunned down a little kid in "Once Upon a Time in the West." Neither did James Stewart when he played a detective twisted into a controlling monster by his obsessions in "Vertigo," nor Denzel Washington as the dirty cop in "Training Day."
Then you have Tom Hanks, a true national treasure and the all-around nicest guy in movies. Just his presence in a darker role is enough to wink at the audience. For all his versatility, I'd argue he has yet to play a fully successful villainous role. He lacked the sinister edge Alec Guinness had as the loquacious criminal mastermind in the disastrous remake of "The Ladykillers,...

Throughout the 1990s, Tom Hanks was a constant at the Academy Awards, winning two Best Actor awards back-to-back for “Philadelphia” (1993) and “Forrest Gump” (1994), followed a few years later by his nomination for “Saving Private Ryan.” When he became the frontrunner to win again in 2001 for “Cast Away,” Hanks appeared to be on track to become the male Meryl Streep at the Oscars, getting nominated every few years, but then nearly two decades passed until he received his sixth Oscar nom for “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.”
And now we’re entering a unique awards season for Hanks in that he’s a major part of two awards-friendly movies and yet might be overlooked for both performances. The first is “Elvis,” for which the lead Austin Butler is a contender to win the Best Actor Oscar, and the second is “A Man Called Otto,” which went into wide release this month,...

For three seasons, "The Newsroom" walked the slimmest of tightropes as an idealistic drama about the teams behind broadcast news. On the one hand, it needed to balance the hefty cynicism directed at media networks for their blatant partisanship and ivory-tower elitism (which it attempted to do by shaping news stories both behind the scenes and in front of a teleprompter). But the show also needed its characters to be convincingly altruistic without coming across as frustratingly naive or, perhaps worse, condescendingly didactic.
Finding such sweet spots in high-tension drama and humanistic optimism has long been creator Aaron Sorkin's bread and butter as both screenwriter and director -- from "A Few Good Men" and "Charlie Wilson's War" to the "Trial of the Chicago 7" and, of course, "The West Wing." How can Amazon Prime Video followup the first season finale of its biggest series ever in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power? The answer lies in its list of new releases for November 2022.
Understandably, Prime Video is probably pretty tired and won’t be opting for any more Middle-earth spectacle for awhile. In its place, however, are a couple of still intriguing Amazon Original series. British Western drama series The English is set to arrive on Nov. 11 to both Prime Video and BBC Two. Emily Blunt stars as a woman who heads to the American West in 1890 looking for revenge on the man she sees as responsible for the death of her son. Cool! Speaking of the English, the James Corden-starring Mammals also premieres on Nov. 11.

The main one to keep your eyes on is Hugo Blick’s “The English,” starring Emily Blunt. In addition to Blunt and Spencer, the cast also includes Stephen Rea, Valerie Pachner, Rafe Spall, Tom Hughes, Toby Jones, and Ciarán Hinds. The series was created by Hugo Blick,...

March 2022 is a great month for blonde women with cold, dead stares on Hulu.
With its list of new releases for March 2022, Hulu is highlighting two major original series ripped straight from the headlines. The first is The Dropout, which premieres on March 3. This show stars Amanda Seyfried (taking over from the previously cast Kate McKinnon) as Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. This story about high-level corporate fraud is truly wild, enough so to accommodate several books, podcasts, and even an upcoming film starring Jennifer Lawrence. Hulu is certainly hoping its version is the definitive one.

In 1952, the second season of CBS sitcom I Love Lucy set viewing records that, 70 years later, have yet to be beaten. The star was Lucille Ball, a lovable klutz from New York, and her husband Ricky was played by her real-life spouse—Cuban refugee Desi Arnaz. Together they founded Desilu Productions, soon to be the No. 1 independent TV company in America. In 1957, however, a scandal surfaced that threatened to tear it all down: Lucy was a registered Communist. Or was she? That fraught time is brought to life by Aaron Sorkin in his Amazon Studios release Being the Ricardos, starring Nicole Kidman as Lucy and Javier Bardem as Desi. Damon Wise sits down with all three to discuss the forgotten legacy of a most unlikely power couple.

The Golden Globe Awards were held on Sunday night, February 28, almost two months later than usual due to the Covid-19 pandemic that sent shock waves through the entertainment industry. So who took home awards, who surprised, and who made history in film categories in this most unusual year, and what do they mean for the awards season ahead? Scroll down for our complete analysis of the movie winners, updated live throughout the night. And check out the complete list of Globe winners here.

Aaron Sorkin probably needs to consider clearing another shelf in his house. The prolific writer added yet another award to his already lengthy résumé during Sunday’s 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards when he took home the Globe for Best Screenplay for Netflix’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” which he also directed.
With this win, Sorkin tied the record for most victories in the screenplay category at three. Only two others have that many to their name: Quentin Tarantino, who took home the Golden Globe for “Pulp Fiction” (1994), “Django Unchained” (2012) and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” last year, and Robert Bolt, who went 3-for-3 for “Doctor Zhivago” (1965), “A Man for All Seasons” (1966) and “The Mission” (1986).
Sorkin previously took home the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay for writing both “The Social Network” (2010) and “Steve Jobs” (2015) but he has been nominated in the category a total of eight times.

In his Best Supporting Actor Oscar speech for “Bridge of Spies” (2015), Mark Rylance quoted his signature line in the film to give a shout-out to Tom Hanks. “I think if you ever wondered about acting with Tom Hanks, ‘Would it help?’, the answer’s clearly yes,” Rylance quipped, holding up his new statuette to the camera.
Rylance is not the only person Hanks, America’s Dad, has helped get some Oscar love. While Hanks had a 19-year nomination drought with the academy, broken last year with his supporting actor bid for “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” many of his supporting co-stars over the past three decades have gotten the patented Tom Hanks Bump, scoring Oscar nominations without him shortlisted in Best Actor. And now his “News of the World” co-star Helena Zengel looks on course to do the same.

Aaron Sorkin could walk away with multiple awards this season for his work on Netflix’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” but a win for Best Screenplay at the Golden Globes on Feb. 28 would put him in an elite group. Most moviegoers who witnessed the 2020 Sundance Film Festival premiere of “Palm Springs” probably did not expect that it would be the only traditional comedy nominated for Best Musical or Comedy at this year’s Golden Globes. After all, comedies (and dramedies) have disproportionately dominated the category for the past decade, while only eight musicals have managed to snag bids. However, the 2021 lineup turned out to be another deviation from the norm in a year full of them.
Joining “Palm Springs” is the unconventional mockumentary “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” which takes the subversiveness of its predecessor to a whole new level. The other three slots are filled by “The Prom,” a standard musical adaptation of the Broadway musical, “Hamilton,” a live stage recording of the legit hit, and “Music,” an original musical drama. The last time three musicals competed against each other for the top honor was in 2008, and it only happened six times before that.

It was 31 years ago when cinematographer Stephen Goldblatt first met playwright John Patrick Shanley. At that point in his career, Goldblatt had photographed “The Hunger,” “Young Sherlock Holmes,” and the first two “Lethal Weapon” movies. Shanley, who had won an Oscar for writing 1987’s “Moonstruck,” needed a trained eye to lens his first film as a director. It was an offbeat romantic comedy about a terminally ill man, played by Tom Hanks, who agrees to leap into a volcano to assuage island gods.
“‘Joe Versus the Volcano’ was a wonderful experience for me,” Goldblatt said to TheWrap. “John was such an imaginative director and I think the film was well ahead of its time. We got on great together and stayed friends over these years.”
Goldblatt was born in South Africa and raised in London. Now 75, he makes his home in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. A couple years ago,...

In “Battlestar Galactica” star and sometime director Edward James Olmos’ “The Devil Has a Name,” corporate America is poisoning the little guy, again. Call me cynical, but that will hardly come as a surprise to most audiences, who’ve been watching entities with deep pockets shirk public safety for quick profits for the better part of their lives, thanks in no small part to Hollywood’s efforts to amplify the whistleblower. Over the years, we’ve seen nuclear facilities fail to contain radiation (“Silkwood”), fracking interests conspire to deceive a small town (“Promised Land”) and DuPont dump toxic chemicals into a West Virginia water supply (“Dark Water”).
Such movies are nearly always earnest to the point of self-righteous, an approach best exemplified by “Erin Brockovich” — which is the case “Devil” most closely resembles, since both true(ish) stories seek to expose the impact of carcinogens seeping from unlined wastewater ponds into the surrounding area.

On paper, “The Trial of the Chicago 7” feels like it could be a bit of Aaron Sorkin’s greatest hits. The drama, which hits select theaters on Friday before heading to Netflix on Oct. 16, has lots of the qualities you can find in previous works that he’s written: politics, legal scenes and, most of all, smart people talking fast (pretty much everything Sorkin has done).
But if “The Trial of the Chicago 7” is indeed full of the verbal pyrotechnics that can make Sorkin such an invigorating storyteller, the film is most notable for the way it goes in directions we haven’t seen from the writer and director. With its intricate editing and full-scale action sequences re-creating the riots at the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago, “The Trial of the Chicago 7” moves beyond Sorkin the writer of dialogue, or Sorkin the supplier of scripts to the likes of Rob Reiner,...

If you were concerned about there being a content drought in August due to the coronavirus pandemic shutting down Hollywood, you were…absolutely right in those concerns.
For its new releases in August 2020, Hulu is following Apple, Disney, and even Peacock’s lead in taking things nice and slowly. The vast majority of the notable offerings here are of the library variety. Hulu adds classic movies like Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Rain Man, and Top Gun on August 1. Those go along with the very much still-holds-up Casino Royale on August 31.
Hulu also has room for some interesting recent indie movies like Ordinary Love (Aug. 3) and Peanut Butter Falcon (Aug. 6). But when it comes to Hulu original content there’s not much going on. The unheralded Find Me in Paris debuts its third season on August 21. That is followed by original comedy The Binge on August 28. And that’s about it!

There are a lot of popular streaming platforms to choose from, but Hulu has always stood alongside Netflix as one of the two essentials for households looking for diversity in content. In the past, they’ve been known for focusing more heavily on newer television content, while Netflix has always offered a larger selection of sought-after films. But now, it looks like Hulu’s June lineup is only going to continue the service’s recent trend of providing high quality movies to bring itself in line with their competitor.

You can then supplement that wholesomeness with My Girl and My Girl 2 for some wonderful 90s nostalgia.

June 2020 is set to be a big month for the whole streaming Disney family. Not only will ESPN+ have the entirety of The Last Dance on its servers for late-adopting sports fans to catch up with, but Disney+ will be premiering its long-awaited Artemis Fowl film. Over on its biggest streaming service in Hulu, however, Disney is taking things a bit more slowly.
This month finds only three major original releases for Hulu. Animated medieval comedy Crossing Swords premieres on June 12, then Ya love story Love Victor and cooking show Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi both arrive on June 19. All in all, that’s not a bad haul for originals for the typically slow summer months.
June 1 sees a pretty impressive crop of movies coming to Hulu’s library as well. October Sky, The X-Files (1998), and Casino will all be ready to stream at the beginning of the month.

Philip Seymour Hoffman passed away on February 2, 2014 at the age of 46. Julia Roberts has some pretty famous co-stars. But which one does she trust the most? During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the Pretty Woman alum played a round of "Burning Questions" and spilled the tea on her Ocean's Eleven co-stars George Clooney and Brad Pitt, and her Charlie Wilson's War and Larry Crowne co-star Tom Hanks. The game started off with some more simple questions from Ellen DeGeneres. The host's first question was, "What was your favorite job before getting into the business?" As Roberts responded, "I worked at a shoe store, I enjoyed that." Next up, DeGeneres wondered, "Who...

"For me, growing up, writing was just a chore to be gotten through for a school assignment," says Aaron Sorkin — the writer of A Few Good Men, Malice, The American President, Sports Night, The West Wing, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Charlie Wilson's War, The Social Network, Moneyball, The Newsroom, Steve Jobs and 2017's Molly's Game, an adaptation of the memoir of Molly Bloom, a former Olympic-level skier who ran bicoastal poker games that landed her in the sights of the FBI and the Russian mob — as we sit down in his dimly lit and...

James Corden and Julia Roberts reenacted scenes from Roberts' wide-ranging filmography on Wednesday, calling up brief, famous scenes from Notting Hill, Pretty Woman, Erin Brockovich and more on The Late Late Show. Roberts stopped by to promote her upcoming movie, Wonder.
Corden got to play most of the famous leading men in the last thirty years of Hollywood blockbusters – he filled in for a mopey Hugh Grant in Notting Hill, a bathing Tom Hanks in Charlie Wilson's War and an aloof Jude Law in Closer.

But since Wonder isn't in theaters until Nov. 17, James Corden wanted to re-promote some of her past projects—26 of them to be exact—on Wednesday's episode of The Late Late Show. Formerly known as Arms and the Dudes, the first trailer for the dark comedy War Dogs has just arrived. The Hangover franchise director Todd Phillips is at the helm of the film which sees two twentysomething men (Jonah Hill and Miles Teller) getting caught up in the insane world of arms dealing, only to land them in the Middle East. This looks like it's going to be a riot, something akin to The Wolf of Wall Street meets Charlie Wilson's War. Just the prospect of Jonah Hill and Miles Teller in a movie together had me sold, but this looks pretty spectacular. And hey, Bradley Cooper is in it too. Watch now! Here's the first trailer for War Dogs from Warner Bros. Pictures: Based on a true story, War Dogs follows two friends in their early 20s (Jonah Hill and Miles Teller) living in Miami Beach during the Iraq War...

Emily Blunt first caught eyes in the indie romance My Summer of Love more than 10 years ago, then nabbed notable supporting roles in The Devil Wears Prada and Charlie Wilson's War. Variety reports that Disney wants to get production started...
