Stars: Michael Shannon, Chris Evans, Winona Ryder, David Schwimmer, Ray Liotta, Robert Davi, John Ventimiglia, James Franco, McKaley Miller, Stephen Dorff | Written by Ariel Vromen, Morgan Land | Directed by Ariel Vromen
“He is such a cold blooded killer, they call him ‘The Iceman’”
Directed by Israeli’s Ariel Vromen (Danika, Rx) and starring Michael Shannon (Man of Steel), Chris Evans (Captain America: The First Avenger) and Winona Ryder (Beetlejuice), The Iceman is a biopic based on the life and events surrounding Richard Kuklinski, the notorious contract killer.
Set in the mid-sixties through to the eighties in New York and New Jersey, The Iceman begins with Kuklinski on a date with Deborah (Ryder) and you see that there’s a warmth to Kuklinski’s character and a sense of humour. It’s nice to see that the film, even in its opening moments, isn’t shying away from showing the grey areas of the story.

The ever-so-intense Michael Shannon plays true life hitman Richard Kuklinski in The Iceman, a bloody drama about the family man who claimed to have murdered over 100 people for the mafia. In the biopic, Shannon is joined by an ensemble cast that includes Chris Evans, Winona Ryder, Ray Liotta, James Franco, David Schwimmer, Robert Davi, and Stephen Dorff.
The film is co-written and directed by Ariel Vromen, who has his biggest project yet with Iceman. Vromen has directed two films previously, Danika with Marisa Tomei in 2006, and Rx with Colin Hanks, Lauren Grahan, and Eric Balfour in 2005, which he also co-wrote.
In a phoner interview, I talked with Vromen about his film, the rising star the drives it, the question of secrecy that it asks, the incredible moments of tension between Michael Shannon and Ray Liotta, and more.

Millennium Entertainment has released a brand new trailer for the upcoming biopic based on the life of notorious mob hit man known as the Iceman. Come on in to check out the new trailer, and how cold Michael Shannon can be.
The Iceman story has garnered quite a bit of attention over the years. It's an interesting and morbid tale. I myself have read several books about the life of the hitman, and there's some scary crap when you sit and think about it. I've been interested in seeing how they bring the story to life on the big screen and judging by the trailer, I don't think any of us are going to be disappointed.
Here's the official synopsis:
Inspired by actual events, The Iceman follows notorious contract killer Richard Kuklinski (Academy Award® nominee Michael Shannon) from his early days in the mob until his arrest for the murder of more than 100 men.

A perfectly delightful rich full relentless festival day, except when I look back and realize that everything I saw was in English, which I find mildly embarrassing and slightly unadventurous on my part, especially when attending a festival screening over 300 films from 60 countries. But I saw what I saw: Paul Thomas Anderson’s “The Master,” at a packed 8:30 a.m. press screening; “The Iceman,” by an Israeli-born director, Ariel Vromen, whose two previous features (“Rx” and “Danika”) I hadn’t heard of, and which played at Telluride and Venice; “The Impossible,” a Spain/Us co-production about a family that miraculously survived the Christmas 2004 tsunami in Thailand; and “Shepard & Dark,” an intimate documentary about the nearly-fifty-year friendship between playwright/actor Sam Shepard and his one-time father-in-law Johnny Dark, now a reclusive odd-job-worker. It would have taken an...

Michael Shannon has slowly built a career around playing eerily calm yet emotionally unstable characters, and so for him to star in a movie called The Iceman feels like a perfect fit. In this case, he is playing real-life hitman Richard Kuklinski who was nicknamed "The Iceman" due to his use of an industrial freezer to mask the time of death. Kuklinski worked for the Gambino crime family between 1964 and 1986 and is said to have killed over 200 people before being arrested; he also had a wife and three kids who had no idea what he really did for a living. The Iceman is a Millennium Films production, which probably explains why the trailer feels a little cheesy, but the supporting cast is pretty solid and includes the likes of Ray Liotta, Winona Ryder, James Franco, Chris Evans, David Schwimmer and Stephen Dorff. The movie is directed by Israeli director Ariel Vromen...

"The Iceman" tells the story of Richard Kuklinski (Shannon), a family man who carried out contract killings for the mob. Ryder will be playing Kuklinski's wife, Deborah, who had no idea that her husband was an assassin, with Evans playing Kuklinski's mentor, Robert Pronge.
According to The Playlist, Maggie Gyllenhaal had originally been attached to the role of Deborah, but she's just one of several actors who have dropped out of the running with this project. In August of 2009 we found out that a movie about one of the planet's most infamous killers, Richard Kuklinski, was being delayed because the producer at that time wanted Channing Tatum for the role. Many of you spoke up about who you'd like to see play the part, and we later found out that one of those names, Mickey Rourke, had been cast in the role.
Now comes a bit of a surprise: there's actually another separate movie based on Kuklinski, better known as The Ice Man, in the works as well. This project, titled The Iceman, comes from Nu Image, and already has its star: Michael Shannon, who can currently be seen on HBO's Boardwalk Empire, and has also been seen in movies like Bug and Revolutionary Road, which nabbed him an Academy Award nomination. Benicio Del Toro is also set for a role in the film, and James Franco is a possibility.

Mickey Rourke is currently set to star as hitman Richard "The Ice Man" Kuklinski in "The Ice Man," and upcoming film based on Philip Carlo's "The Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer" book which is being adapted by David McKenna (American History X, Blow). Everything is progressing nicely, but the project just got some competition from director Ariel Vromen (Danika) who is working on "The Iceman" movie, which is also a Kuklinski biopic but is based on Anthony Bruno's "The Iceman: The True Story of a Cold-Blooded Killer" book. And to make it more of a competition, Vromen just signed James Franco, Michael Shannon, and Benicio Del Toro. Shannon will play the lead role. Summary of the book: Richard Kuklinsky, son of a brutal, alcoholic father who came home only infrequently and a mother who vented her resentment on her children, grew up to be an efficient mass murderer.
