Girish Karnad was one of the true intellectuals of post Independent India. A polyglot, playwright, actor, film maker, aesthete, scholar, teacher, critic and a humanist Girish was never a close friend but someone whom I always looked forward to meeting.
We came to know each other around 1972 through several common friends like Shyam Benegal, Basu Chatterjee, Satyadev Dubey and B.V. Karanth though I was acquainted with his work from the mid-sixties. His plays 'Yayati' (1961), 'Tughlaq' (1964), 'Hayavadana' (1972) and 'Nagamandala' (1988) rank among the finest Indian plays post-Independence.
A Rhodes scholar, Girish interestingly started by reading Mathematics in college. He was to become a scholar in history, literature, cinema and stagecraft. He was steeped in Indian tradition and had a deep study of our mythology, specially the Mahabharata.
He has won practically every award which an artiste in India can aspire for - Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Sahitya Akademi Award, Kalidas Samman, Jnanpith Award,...

Indian playwright, filmmaker and actor Girish Karnad, star of such films as “Manthan,” “Nishant” and “Swami,” died June 10 in his home in Bengaluru, India. He was 81 and had a “multi-organ failure,” according to reports. Working in alternate regional and Hindi-language films separate from Bollywood, Karnad made a name for himself in the 1970s. India conferred its highest literary honor, the Jnanpith Award on him in 1998.
As a director, he made his debut in 1972 with “Vamsa Vriksha,” by renowned Kannada novelist S.L. Bhyrappa. It was co-helmed with B.V. Karanth, another luminary of Kannada cinema. It touched on the then-taboo subject of widow remarriage and introduced audiences to the actor Vishnuvardhan. The film was later remade in another Telugu, another regional language, and starred Anil Kapoor.
Karnad made his acting bow in 1970 with “Samskara” (Funeral Rites), which he adapted from U.R. Ananthamurthy’s novel of the same name, which deals with caste issues.

Shreyas Talpade has been known for some really thought provoking stories he has brought to the cinema, be it Dor, Iqbal or his upcoming release Wah Taj! The versatile actor makes it a point to leave you with messages that would run chills down your spine. He not only has a knack of pulling off these scripts driven by social issues but he also can make your ribs tickle with laughter.
Every actor has a different reason for either accepting or rejecting the script, we asked Shreyas what is it that he looks for in a script. The actor very sportingly responds saying, “The script has to appeal to the actor within me in its first hearing itself. If it doesn’t, then with every hearing post that you try to justify certain things in the script only because you either want to work with the director, producer or the money involved.

The Filmmaker, who is known for his films like Iqbal, Dor and Hyderabad Blues, is ecstatic. When asked Nagesh Kukunoor, he says, “I had promised myself that I would never attend the Berlinale till one of my films make it to the festival. I cannot believe this has actually happened!”
Like his National award winning film Iqbal, Dhanak also potrays a central character with a disability, but in a dramatically diverse setting. The film is about an eight-year-old blind boy whose 11-year-old sister promises him that he will get his vision back before he turns 10. The film follows the duo on a life-changing journey through the sand dunes of Rajasthan.

Mumbai, March 25: Filmmaker and actor Nagesh Kukunoor's latest film "Lakshmi", about human trafficking and child prostitution has garnered critics' appreciation. He says he strives to give the audience a choice in films as repetition can bore the audience.
Kukunoor is known for films as different as "Rockford", "Iqbal", "Dor" and "Mod".
"I have always been of the view that the audience should be given choices. If we make the same kind of films, the audience doesn't grow and they don't get to experience different things," he said here Monday at the Nri of the Year award function.
"I have always tried to tell.

Veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai had made inroads in the music industry way back when he launched his film Kisna's music under his banner Mukta Music. Apparently, Ghai, who is known for his film's music, is all set to re- launch his music label with his next directorial venture Kaanchi.
Mukta Music after successfully backing the music distribution of films like Kisna, Jogger's Park and Iqbal went silent and is now geared up to create a stir in the music market again. "My film's music has always been a hit. Our films - Karz, Hero, Ram Lakhan, Khalnayak, Taal and Yaadein had very successful music. People told me long ago, when I first got into production, that I should launch a music arm for my company. But my focus was different then," said Ghai.
He further added, "The music industry has evolved a great deal since the '70s and '80s.

The 63-year-old, who has featured in films like "Masoom", "Sarfarosh", "Iqbal" and "The Dirty Picture", was asked what he makes of the current scenario of Indian filmmakers fighting with each other to make it to the Oscars.

New Delhi, April 29: Nagesh Kukunoor describes filmmaking as a test of certainty and conviction of a person because he feels making movies is a "long solo" journey, and one has to stay "sane" during the incubation period.
Be it the story of a deaf and mute boy in "Iqbal" or the fate of two different women crossing the same path in "Dor", Kukunoor has touched the hearts of the audience with his high-on-emotion stories.
"Whenever any filmmaker embarks on the journey of making a film, it's a very long, solo fight. You have to believe very strongly in the subject matter that you are dealing with," Kukunoor told Ians in an interview.
"By the time it reaches the audience, it takes almost a year-and-a-half. So you have.

Mumbai, Jan 26: Acclaimed filmmaker Nagesh Kukunoor understands the importance of casting popular actors in movies for box office success, but says he is not ready to compromise on his casting criteria just for that.
Most of Kukunoor's films -- "Hyderabad Blues", "Rockford", "Iqbal" and "Dor" -- have found critical acclaim, but didn't mint too much moolah. Could it be because he hasn't considered casting A-list actors?
"It (having big stars) does make a difference you want your film to be seen by the widest audience. No one controls this...If you don't have any of the 10 main actors, then you are always going to struggle.

Adopting an ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ approach, the hit trio of Anushka Sharma, Ranveer Singh and director Maneesh Sharma, reunite to deliver the follow-up to Band Baaja Baaraat. Arriving exactly a year after their surprise blockbuster, to say expectations are high for Ladies v/s Ricky Bahl, would be an understatement.
Add to this, the fact that producer Aditya Chopra is involved and this is a Yash Raj Films project, and you can see that the said ladies and Ricky have their work cut out in meeting the demands of the audience.

Why do you name a film Cycle Kick? Because the first half of the film deals with cycle and the latter half with football! And that is not the only bit where the film disappoints. It is Vittorio De Sica’s Bicycle Thieves rendered in an Indian milieu; where the father-son story has been transposed on two orphaned brothers living in a village by the river-side. Much to the dismay of the viewers, the writer lacks originality to the point that one of the professions of the elder brother is putting up Bollywood posters around the village, for which a bicycle would be vital. Only if my brother had a bicycle, he could put up 50 posters everyday instead of 25, the younger brother wishes.
Indian stories cannot be devoid of miracles. Here, the protagonist doesn’t need to pawn bedsheets to buy a bicycle; the two brothers find a bicycle one...

Director: Sunny Bhambhani, Producer: Subhash Ghai, Actors: Sahil Mehta, Mannat Ravi, Vikas Katyal, Priyam Galav, Om Puri
This film has been a low-key affair, a small budget film devoid of stars, not much publicized and now hardly being written about. Nevertheless, under the aegis of Subhash Ghai, it comes from the banner Mukta Searchlight which has produced films like Iqbal, Jogger’s Park and Nauka Dubi earlier. Why this film is worthy of attention is that it has been made (well, almost) by the students of Subhash Ghai’s film school Whistling Woods International in Mumbai. Most of the artists and technicians in the film, including director Sunny Bhambhani are the products of a film school, which raises expectations and makes one curious to see their work.
One would expect such a film to be novel, experimental and above all, fresh. The film is a huge disappointment in this regard.
