Amar Singh Chamkila Director Imtiaz Ali Is Bollywood’s Magician Churning Out Great Stories. (Photo Credit – IMDb/Instagram)
Imtiaz Ali is back to doing what he does best. Weaving magic on the silver screen. The director started his career in 2005 with a film that was produced by Dharmendra and launched Abhay Deol in the film industry. He is back with his 9th directorial, Amar Singh Chamkila, starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra.
Imtiaz is considered one of those magical stars who has never shied away from creating masterpieces. His films might not have been box-office marvels, but all of them have a special place in the audience’s hearts except for two.
The only exceptions in Imtiaz Ali‘s career have been Jab Harry Met Sejal, starring Anushka Sharma and Shah Rukh Khan, and the other being a second attempt at Love Aaj Kal, starring Sara Ali Khan and Kartik Aaryan.

Mumbai, April 2 (Ians) Auteur Imtiaz Ali is one of the rare filmmakers who strikes a perfect balance between philosophy and entertainment in his stories.
While his earlier works like ‘Socha Na Tha’ and ‘Jab We Met’ were more on the entertaining side, films like ‘Love Aaj Kal’ (2009), ‘Rockstar’ and ‘Tamasha’ have aged like a fine wine and have cultivated a new fan base which craves for deeper meaning to a story as much as the entertainment.
The filmmaker is now gearing up for his ninth film, the biopic based on the highest selling Punjabi musician of all times, ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’.
“There are a lot of ‘9’ happening,” Imtiaz told Ians as he seems in a quirky mood.
“Nine is my favourite number, A.R. Rahman (his music composer) also loves nine, he has made ’99 Songs’ and ‘Chamkila’ is my ninth film”.

Someone who has navigated seamlessly between parallel and mainstream cinema, choosing scripts that had scandalised his colleagues in Industry, actor Abhay Deol insists that taking a risk is his formula, and playing safe is not part of who he is. The actor talked about films like ‘Dev D’ and ‘Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!’ that made him a darling of independent film followers.
“These were directed by those boasting of a different cinematic language and story treatment. I have always believed in good work and the fact that people are ready to embrace the new. I am glad I was part of that movement where I worked with several debut directors or those who had just started their careers,” says the actor who debuted with ‘Socha Na Tha’ (2005).
Surprisingly, he came in very late for the publicity of the above mentioned films. “Believe it or not, I was afraid of fame.

Imtiaz Ali turned 50 on 16th June and the media shy filmmaker stayed away from making huge noise around the big day. Though the makers of many notable movies right from Socha Na Tha to Love Aaj Kal has established quite some credentials within the film industry and also amongst the audiences over the years, he has always allowed his work to speak for itself. In the midst of it all, one actor who has worked with him and ensured that he reached out on his birthday publicly was Kartik Aaryan.

Oh.. so it got over. But from when did I start developing a feeling for Veer and Zoe in the last two hours and twenty one minutes of Love Aaj Kal ?. Dear Imtiaz Ali please start thinking of helming an action comedy now. You seriously need a change and a detox/ escape from the love cycle you have got yourself trapped in.
The Story of Love Aaj Kal
The structure is the same. Veer (Kartik) and Zoe (Sara) meet at a nightclub.

If the flop-ridden Hindi film industry had its hopes pinned on the new Shah Rukh Khan starrer for salvation, then it’s time to unpin those hopes.
Imtiaz Ali’s eagerly awaited Jab Harry Met Sejal is a lengthy lumbering, baggy and pointless love story….as lengthy, lumbering, etc, as his earlier Tamasha where two grown-up individuals behaved like a bratty unpleasant couple on a reality-show pretending to be people they were not.
Just imagine if Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone met again in an exotic land and decided to play….ummm…. a cranky closet-misogynist tourist guide and a fast-taking vacuous but charming Gujarati tourist.
Fun, no?
Well, no. Not really. Shah Rukh’s Harry with his unabashed cheesiness and ‘cheapness’ plays his part with an arrogant aplomb that seems borrowed from his superstar persona of Aryan Khanna in Maneesh Sharma’s Fan. Here is a man who will do what he wants,...

From his very first film Socha Na Tha, through the fabulous Jab We Met, to Cocktail, Rockstar and Highway, director Imtiaz Ali always takes you on an incredible cinematic journey. What makes his movies so very good is that while watching, you get lost in the world he has created on film and live with the characters through the story, the drama, the tears, the love and sometimes the happy ending. As a director he always manages to bring out incredible performances by the actors in his film, many times career-changing performances that truly show what an actor is made of. Think Deepika Padukone in Cocktail, Ranbir Kapoor in Rockstar, Alia Bhatt in Highway and so many more.

Since we got our first look at the trailer, Tamasha has been high on the lists of films we must see. One of the biggest reasons is that this relationship drama stars the great onscreen jodi of Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, whose last outing Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani broke box-office records. And fan’s can’t wait to see their chemistry playout in the world of Tamasha as well.
We also have to list Academy Award winner Ar Rahman’s music is also adding to the magic of the film. We loved the Ost and in fact gave it 4 stars (read our review here)

There is a particular sense and sensibility that Imtiaz Ali’s films carry. While Jab We Met stays on to be his most wholesome entertainer till date, there is a certain pattern that each of his other three popular films (leaving Socha Na Tha) aside carry, be it Love Aaj Kal, Rockstar or Highway. They carry elements between hardcore mainstream and artistic treatment with just the percentages of distribution differing. Love Aaj Kal was more mainstream, Highway took a festival route while Rockstar tried to strike a balance between the two.
Now with Tamasha, one again gains an impression of a mainstream film in the offering which has a definite director’s treatment to it right through. Moreover, with Sajid Nadiadwala in there for whom Tamasha is indeed that Big film of 2015, you know for sure that the resources provided to make the film are as lavish, abundant and classy...

Last Sunday was yet another brilliant evening as renowned entertainment journalist Indu Mirani spoke to Imtiaz Ali in the 7th edition of Boss Dialogues. The otherwise quiet Imtiaz made us laugh, spoke about his journey in the industry so far and more dearly about his films that have made him one of the most loved directors of today.
The discussion began as he spoke about his childhood and his dreams. “I somehow always saw myself as a secret service guy or a novelist. I liked writing,” he said. Did you know that Mahesh Bhatt was the first one to ask him to make a film? “He is such an amazing person. He was the one who recognised me when no one did,” he smiled. Starting out in television, Indian director Imtiaz Ali made his feature debut with 2005's Socha Na Tha. His 2007 follow-up Jab We Met delivered his first major commercial hit. The romantic drama starred actress Kareena Kapoor and actor Shahid Kapoor and defined Ali's signature style: a fresh take on contemporary relationships. He continued in this vein with 2009's Love Aaj Kal, starring Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone. With 2011's Rockstar, Ali established rising star Ranbir Kapoor as the next big thing. Kapoor delivered a critically acclaimed performance as a love-lorn college student-turned-rock icon. Photos: 25 of the Most

A.R Rahman, whose collaboration with Imtiaz Ali on Highway, would now be scoring a hat-trick with the filmmaker. For Imtiaz's next which has a working title Window Seat, the composer has given a nod of agreement to create music. Jab We Met. Just reading that title makes many a Bollywood fan smile. The 2007 romantic comedy starred Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor in outstanding performances and was directed by the great Imtiaz Ali. The film was a super duper hit and has gone on to be considered one of the best romance films to come out of Bollywood. This had had had to be on our list of the best of the best!

More than 150 people gathered at the Dream Downtown Hotel during the weekend to glean “insider” information about directing, producing, writing, and financing Bollywood films from A-list Indian filmmakers Imtiaz Ali, Zoya Akhtar, and screenwriter Anuraadha Tewari. Presented by Dar Motion Pictures (a division of Dar Media Pvt. Ltd.) and Mumbai and New York based Molecule Communications and supported by Vikram Chatwal the two-day educational conference titled Ticket2Bollywood was themed Bollywood: Beyond the Song and Dance. The event provided a platform for aspiring and established actors, directors, and producers to learn how they could potentially break into Bollywood.
“So many Bollywood directors are choosing to shoot their films abroad, whether in New York or other major cities around the world,” says Kiren Shrivastav, Director and CEO of Molecule Communications. “These filmmakers are always looking for local talent, production crews, writers, directors, and music composers to give their films an international flare and perspective.

The buzz is that Abhay Deol is all set to star in debutant director Vibhu Puri's Bambai Fairy Tale. It is a period love story set in the city of dreams, Mumbai. Apparently, Abhay will not only star in the film but also produce it. It's been a while since we last saw Abhay in an out and out romantic film. Defying his chocolate hero looks, the actor has been quite choosy about doing a love story. Even though he debuted in Imtiaz Ali's Socha Na Tha which was a romantic film, he has rarely been seen in one after, barring Anurag Kashyap's Dev D and the forgettable Aisha. His last film Shanghai was a political thriller. So it will be a nice change to see him in a romantic avatar once again. A source close to Abhay reveals, "After Shanghai, Abhay was looking to do something entirely different.

Shanghai has been mounting up expectations and the cast/crew is well aware and making sure they get things right. Already the portrayal of Emraan Hashmi has got people curious as he went all out and packed the pounds on for his character.
However, Abhay Deol is not far behind as he plays a Tamil Ias officer but beyond the accent factor, the actor who debut in lover boyish roles like Socha Na Tha, required to stay fit, as per directors orders. “.. I concentrated on my martial arts, yoga and running. Anyway Krishnan is not a lazy guy. He plays badminton and is very athletic. It’s just that he doesn’t sport six packs.” says the actor when speaking to Times of India. Fair enough. But coming back to the accent what about his cousin Esha Deol, who has openly stated the language spoken at home is mostly Tamil.

It was just eight years ago that Irshad Kamil started out with Chameli moving on to Socha Na Tha, Ahista Ahista, Karam, Shabd and more. The good times did not take long to start rolling, beginning with Jab We Met, and rapidly progressing to Love Aaj Kal, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai, Action Replayy, Mausam, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, Desi Boyz and Rockstar. The lyricist, however, is in no hurry of any kind. "I want to work hard and with complete honesty," he says candidly. "I am not in the game of trying to show that I am a big-name lyricist - I would like to be content even being a Raja Mehndi Ali Khansaab, a small name with an impeccable reputation. I have never been impatient in the matter of fame or money. I turn down films whose stories I do not like.

Someone tells our boy-next-door Janardan Jakhad who is an aspiring rockstar that to be an artist, one has to bear pain. What pain does he have in life, he thinks to himself—his parents are still alive, he wasn’t beaten up or molested in his childhood nor did he meet with any severe accident. So, can’t an ordinary boy in the most ordinary situations in life be a rockstar? The film tells us—he can’t. Because Janardan Jakhad becomes Jordan and invites pain upon himself in the most unconvincing of ways and then ends up as—Jordan, the rockstar.
Rockstar betrays a lack of conviction unlike Imtiaz Ali’s other films. This one would have worked well as a boy-next-door’s journey to stardom and his inability to fit within the spaces that...

Ahhhhhhh! It’s been a while since one felt that stab in the heart while watching a love story trot towards its somber culmination. Love’s like that. When put on film it can make you fall in love with the emotion called love, as it happened in Imtiaz Ali’s Jab We Met.
We’ll never know why Imtiaz didn’t cast Ayesha Takia in Jab We Met after she sparkled in Ali’s Socha Na Tha. But there’s Kukunoor who truly values in Takia’s talent.
She brings to this film about that silly thing called, a kind of inner conviction that makes you want to believe in her faith in the oft-abused emotion. When Ayesha speaks her lines they don’t sound written in this under-written film about love that has goes...

Tusshar Kapoor and Amrita Rao On the Love U Mr. Kalakaar poster
Movie: Love U… Mr. Kalakaar!
Music Director: Sandesh Shandilya
Lyricist: Manoj Muntashir Music
Label: Sony Music
Rating: ** 1/2
I have always believed that Sandesh Shandilya is extremely talented. There are so many hits to his credit. He is well known for the music of Piya basanti , Rules: Pyar ka superhit formula, Chameli, Socha Na Tha, and Suraj hua Madham. With his newest album, Love U… Mr. Kalakaar!, it seems like Shandilya has taken a few leaves from Pritam?s book, and the result is quite a surprise.
Track 01?Sarphira Sa Hai Dil, Singers: Neeraj Shridhar, Shreya Ghoshal, Duration: 5:22
The way the songs starts (supported with English lyrics) and followed by Neeraj Shridhar?s voice, one could easily assume that this ones a Pritam?s composition; though the choice of instrument is largely different and there is more fusion to it.

Karan Johar’s season 3 of his talk show Koffee with Karan seems to be letting out quite a few secrets from the celebrities lives. After the controversial episode of Deepika-Sonam, this Sunday saw three popular and talented directors: Farah Khan, Imtiaz Ali and Rajkumar Hirani sharing some interesting facts with Karan (and the viewers). And it was Farah, who had a pretty sweet story to tell. Shirish and Farah were dating during the time he was an editor for Imtiaz’s Socha Na Tha. And it so happened that Farah used to meet him during his editing sessions in his edit room and dance to a song from the movie: 'Seedhe Saadhe Dhang Se'! Said Farah,” It was like a proposal song for us.”

The upcoming release of Rajshree Ojha's Aisha -- based on Jane Austen's Emma and starring Sonam Kapoor - will also bring Abhay Deol back to the screen in his first conventionally commercial venture since his debut film, Socha Na Tha. Although the focus of the film's publicity has clearly been on its title character, it provides an opportunity to take a look back at Abhay Deol's film career, to highlight his growth and maturity as an actor - and as a star.
Socha Na Tha(2005)

Viren (Abhay Deol) and Aditi (Ayesha Takia) are introduced by their very traditional families who are trying to arrange both their marriages. Viren and Aditi, however, want something - someone - different. Viren refuses the match for them, and the two families start a bitter squabble. And Viren and Aditi? Become the best of friends.
