Exclusive: The BBC is preparing to set out new rules that will govern what its biggest stars can post on social media after a debacle over a Gary Lineker tweet earlier this year.
BBC insiders said the results of an independent review by former ITN CEO John Hardie could be published as early as Thursday. The BBC declined to comment on the timing of an announcement but did not deny that it was imminent.
It is not clear if the BBC will publish Hardie’s findings in full alongside changes to social media guidance. The last time the BBC ordered a social media review in 2020, the broadcaster did not make public the conclusions of Richard Sambrook, a former BBC News executive.

Exclusive: The BBC failed to fully heed advice in 2020 that could have helped the broadcaster avoid a weekend of carnage over a single tweet from Gary Lineker, its highest-paid presenter.
A review of the BBC’s social media guidelines three years ago recommended that it specifically examine rules for freelance presenters such as Lineker, who hosts the popular Premier League highlights program Match of the Day.
The revelation is likely to raise further questions about BBC Director-General Tim Davie’s handling of the Lineker saga, given he admitted today that there are “grey areas” in its guidance for freelancers. Lineker earns £1.35M ($1.62M) a year from the BBC in addition to other work, including running WME-backed podcast producer Goalhanger.
Richard Sambrook, a former BBC News executive and emeritus professor of journalism at Cardiff University, was engaged in 2020 to help draw up new social media rules for BBC journalists.

Gary Lineker has been a major topic of discussion for days, following his tweet in response to Suella Braverman’s immigration bill.
Last week, the government announced a new policy to halt small boat crossings. It will result in the deportation of asylum seekers who arrive via boat to Rwanda or another “safe third country” without hearing their asylum claim.
Reacting to the news, Lineker expressed his distaste for the decision and responded to someone who pushed back on his view on Twitter.
He wrote: “There is no huge influx. We take far fewer refugees than other major European countries.
“This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s, and I’m out of order?”

Jimmy Kimmel on Wednesday took aim at Donald Trump for allegedly planning to make public execution part of his agenda if he were to win reelection.
He cited a Rolling Stone report stating that the former president intends to bring back firing squads, hangings and the guillotine.
“Is he running for president, or Sheriff of Nottingham? I don’t know,” the host joked during his opening monologue on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
He went on to say that Trump doesn’t even want to be president – “he wants to host a game show where he drops people through a trap door filled with crocodiles at the bottom. He wants to host ‘Squid Game.'”

A Sex Education star has been left feeling sad by the departure of a main cast member.
Netflix’s hit comedy-drama recently completed filming its fourth season.
Things will look a little different than usual as some of the main characters, including Otis (Asa Butterfield) and Eric (Ncuti Gatwa), will be moving to a new college.
This means that many supporting characters will not be a part of the new series. However, at the end of season four, one of the main characters will also be leaving the show.
Gatwa, alongside a photo of his character’s name, wrote on Instagram earlier this week: “Last day. Last time. Bye bubs, thank you for all the lessons and for all the strength.”
His departure is perhaps less surprising considering he was announced as the new lead star of Doctor Who in 2021. Following Russell T Davies’ anniversary episodes, in which David Tennant and Catherine Tate will return,...

The Apprentice candidate Reece Donnelly has addressed claims he was kicked off the show.
On Thursday (9 February), the latest episode of the BBC competition continued, showing contestants participating in a task in Dubai.
At the beginning of the episode, Donnelly could be seen at Heathrow. However, he later vanished from the episode, leaving viewers to wonder where he was.
Back in the boardroom, Lord Sugar told the contestants that Donnelly had to withdraw from the series.
However, The Sun claimed that Donnelly was actually booted off the show due to drinking on the flight to Dubai.
The report said: “Producers take health and safety extremely seriously and have a duty of care to all the candidates.
“Having him on screen intoxicated and taking part in a task when he was unfit to do so was something they simply couldn’t contemplate.”

Sex and the City fans are in a state of frenzy after new photos teasing a steamy reunion between Carrie Bradshaw and Adain Shaw were released.
It was announced in August 2022 that season two of And Just Like That, the spinoff of the cult classic sitcom, would feature the return of Carrie’s (Sarah Jessica Parker) ex-boyfriend Aidan (John Corbett).
At the time, the extent of their reconnection was unknown, but fan opinion was heavily divided at the prospect of a revived romance between the show’s former couple.
Now, months later, on Thursday (9 February), Parker shared a series of behind-the-scenes photos of her and Corbett kissing, seemingly confirming a reignited romance between their characters.
“This. Is. Not. A. Drill,” Parker captioned the Instagram post, which has, once again, caused a mixed response from fans.

On a special episode of the actor’s podcast Podcrushed, which he co-hosts with industry colleagues Nava Kavelin and Sophie Ansari, Badgley shared that ahead of You’s newest series, he had asked the show’s creator Sera Gamble, “Can I just do no more intimacy scenes”?
“This was actually a decision I had made before I took the show,” he said, further explaining his reasoning: “Do I want to put myself back on a career path where I’m always [the] romantic lead?”
Badgley continued: “Fidelity, in every relationship, and especially my marriage, is important to me.”

Roseanne Barr has accused Hollywood of having double standards.

The Apprentice has return to the BBC for another series without Claude Littner.
Littner made a grand return after taking a year off in 2022 when he almost lost his leg following a horrific injury.
However, Lord Alan Sugar was forced to drop his aide once again just one episode into the latest run.
Speaking at a press launch for the series, multiple outlets reported Sugar as saying: “Unfortunately, Claude suffered some medical issues and so I was asked to think of someone else.”
He opted for series one winner Tim Capmbell, who stepped into Littner’s shoes for the previous outing, which aired in 2022.
“Who better than somebody who’s actually been through the process?” Sugar said of his decision.
“It was a bit of a no-brainer really because when it comes to making the excuses that these candidates do, you’ve got Tim there, who’s seen it and heard it all.

The Masked Singer is back on our screens, turning the nation into at-home detectives as they try to figure out who this year’s celebrity contestants are.
The singing competition series, in which celebrities compete anonymously behind giant anthropomorphic costumes, returned on New Year’s Day, with the first group of contestants all performing.
Among the group was Phoenix, who was shown in their Vt standing within a grand castle and explaining in a posh accent that “I am rather hot, aren’t I?”
“Fire” by Kasabian then played as Phoenix said that they had risen from the ashes and been “born anew” and “reincarnated”.
They also said that they were good with “mysteries” and “following a trail”, while Phoenix was shown inspecting foot prints with a magnifying glass.
Phoenix’s first performance was a jazz version of “Get Lucky” by Daft Punk. While performing, they sang with an American accent.

Brad Pitt has opened up about his biggest pet peeve in a new interview.
The 59-year-old Mr & Mrs Smith actor revealed what irritates him the most while promoting his new film, Damien Chazelle’s Babylon.
“You know what my pet peeve – my Larry David moment – is?” he said. “It’s when people are in the passing lane and they’re going as slow as everyone in the regular lanes.”
Pitt was referencing the show Curb Your Enthusiasm, in which the star, Larry David, accidentally offends characters on a regular basis.
Explaining the types of drivers he finds frustrating, the Ad Astra star explained to W Magazine: “They block the whole thing, and you can’t get around. I gotta move. And when I feel trapped, I go all Larry David on ’em.”
When asked how he responds to the situation, Pitt said that he tries to be “nicer these days”.

If you’re a fan of video games, you can hardly have been impressed by the current spate of television adaptations. From Paramount Plus’s anaemic Halo to Netflix’s short-lived and by-the-numbers Resident Evil, gamers have been served poorly by TV executives. So, when the news emerged that Craig Mazin, writer of the critically acclaimed Chernobyl mini-series, would be joining forces with Neil Druckmann, creator of one of the most revered games in the history of the format, well, expectations were tempered. So it is with a breezily unencumbered swagger that HBO’s epic reimagining of The Last of Us arrives this month on small screens.

The Apprentice star Lord Alan Sugar has opened up about what viewers don’t see on screen.
BBC’s business-styled reality competition returned earlier this month on Thursday (5 January), with 18 new contestants competing to win Sugar’s £250,000 investment.
Devised following the success of the American original led by Donald Trump, The Apprentice UK has been running since 2005, fronted by Sugar.
Each episode sees the contestants take on a different task after which they assemble in a boardroom to have their performance critiqued by Sugar, whose manner is often depicted as harsh and abrasive.
Speaking to The Guardian about his time on the show, Sugar, 75, shed some light on the reality behind the episodes.
“One of the things I’ve got used to is needing patience,” he said.
“There’s a lot of hanging around between board meetings. The boardroom sessions go on for three-and-a-half hours but you only see 25 minutes.

She then explained that she took herself off to the loo for a pep talk.
