Raintree is a thoroughbred horse-farm. Pete, its owner, left the Ritter family and serious debt, but Jean Ritter is determined to keep it in the family, rather then sell control to the wealthy and well-connected Ken Davis. Her invaluable horse trainer, Pablo Betart, who once has a record too, convinces her to hire a new ranch hand- it's Kris(ten) Furillo, who needs the job to convince the judge to end her detention term for car theft and resisting arrest. Her horse-skills impress everyone, from old Henry and young but extremely astute Todd Ritter to the young men on the ranch, good friends Todd Ritter and Kenny 'Junior' Davis. After their best horse comes only fourth is a high-prized race, Jean doubts whether she can hold out financially.

After serving a light term, Kris Furillo is allowed back to the ranch, and so is her favorite horse Wildfire, but he is in no state to be ridden. Mother Jean Ritter has reason to worry Kris' presence -now in the house too- will get the boys too horny, and indeed her son Matt -to whom Kris explains the burly boy he saw her with in jail is just her brother, US Marine Jace- breaks up with Kenny's sister, Danielle Davis; Kenny Junior Davis dares him to a car race, which get her and both rivaling friends arrested, which may even lead to revoking her parole. Kris tells Matt she can handle smooth types like Kenny, not nice boys like him, but wants him to keep his distance. When she learns from Junior the drag race was Dani's idea, Kris hits her publicly, but Kenny uses a secret to prevent an assault complaint which would have put Kris back in jail. At the end Wildfire also comes to her again.

The farm's financial situation is so bad that mother Jean Ritter is preparing a sale of everything she can functionally spare, even despite emotional value, including her engagement ring. Meanwhile Kris's mother Barb, who always was a lousy role-model, is back and succeeds in making the court accept a petition to let Kris go back home, and expects her to leave the ranch. When Jean's ring is stolen, both Kris and Barb are the obvious suspects, and Kris is convinced pills still drive her ma to crime. Matt and Kenny place bets with a certain Bobby. Finally the ring is returned anonymously and the thief owes up to Jean...

When Kristin rides Oklahoma Crude, Raintree's best prospect to earn badly needed prize money, the horse breaks a leg; an operation is a major financial risk, and Jeanne Rittter seriously considers selling Wildfire to pay for it. So Kris takes a waitress job in obligatory, too tight T-shirt, and thus gets willfully abused by Danielle Davis, while Kenny Junior over-tips her as compensation. She gets fired, and nearly charged and thus possibly send back to jail, for intervening when Matt Ritter's bookie Bobby grabs his unwilling girlfriend on the parking. After Jean admits to him she knew dad doctored the books and was very lucky their first tax audit ever was not more thorough, Matt decides at the last moment against betting despite his current debt with Bobby according to a system he just learned from Charlie Hewitt.

To Kristens horror, Wildfire is entered for a sales race, and there's even a claimant, who must buy even if the horse loses. Mother Jean wants to accept going out again, the first time since she's a widow, but tells Charlie she must ask Matt first, and hope they'll grow closer when he gives Charlie his riding lessons. Matt discovers the claimant Caldo Farms is probably a front; Kenny 'Junior' Davis accepts to act as rival claimant, so the dodgy claim may be neutralized- his price is just a single night with her, and as she realizes waking up in bed next to him, he even faked passing out in bed because she still didn't really want to go all the way. Pablo announces he'll leave Raintree if Wildfire does. After the hired jockey tells Kris to ride and teaches her how, they win the race breaking the track record on 1 1/4 mile, but Kenny's bid looses the draw. Now Jean and Pablo come to an agreement...

Kris may stress he'll never get anyway with her, Kenny 'Junior' insists they have dinner together. Matt and Kris investigate possible poisoners after finding some cattle feed in his trailer. When Matt gets threatened by his new bookie to pay his gambling bets, he thinks that was the poisoner as a warning and sells the motorbike he loved because his dad gave it to him. Pablo, Jean Ritter's new partner, insists they switch from conventional to holistic medicine and acupuncture. The other suspects is Carlos, a cattle feed trader who was once sacked because Raintree needed to downsize; this leads to a surprising culprit.
