Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we usually talk about movie stars and not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between. Today, however, we talk about Oscar movies (!), or better yet, movies that remind us of Oscar movies!
Conor and I welcome back the lovely Joe Reid & Chris Feil of the This Had Oscar Buzz podcast. In today’s episode, we each choose a movie that reminds us of a current Best Picture Oscar nominee.
The movies include Born to be Blue, The Ant Bully, The Ritz, and Frankenstein Created Woman. We also take a good few minutes to dish on legend Barbra Streisand’s incredible autobiography My Name Is Barbra.
For more from The B-Side, you can check out highlights of actors/directors and the films discussed in one place here.

The latest Netflix live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender received mixed reactions from fans, and it’s understandable why. The original animated show shaped the childhood of many viewers, and any other iterations would find it hard to match level with.

The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering The Descent was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Adam Walton, Edited by Jaime Vasquez, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
The decade comprised of the years 2000 to 2009 seems to be maligned by many horror fans as a bad period, a period where nothing good was released. Much like the decades before it when folks maligned the 1990s, 1980s, and now more recent movies, there was some bad stuff put out of course, but there were also a whole of good movies too. Some of them, like The Strangers in 2008, The House of the Devil in 2009, and Brotherhood of the Wolf in 2001 were excellent even. People often seem to paint the past in a better light and vilify the more recent eras when it comes to horror films. In 2005, plenty of horror films were released.

It’s a lean month for new original content on HBO/Max. November will see the return of two scripted series in Julia and Rap Sh!t, both of which are debuting their respective second seasons, but this month’s fresh highlight is likely to be Bookie, a new comedy series from the partnership of The Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre, and Nick Bakay. The show tracks an LA bookie called Danny (Sebastian Maniscalco), whose business is in peril as California movies to legalize sports gambling.
Elsewhere in November, there quite a few interesting documentaries to keep an eye on, and two that jump out as “must watch”. The first is Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, which chronicles the aging comedian’s life and career. The second is the previously-released Little Richard: I Am Everything, which tries to peel back the whitewashed canon of Richard Penniman in a true...

Allison Mack has been released from prison.
The Smallville alum had been serving a three-year sentence in prison after pleading guilty to manipulating women into becoming sex slaves via the Nxivm cult.
She was charged with sex trafficking, sex trafficking conspiracy, and forced labor conspiracy and handed a three-year sentence.
News of her release was first shared by Albany Times-Union, which revealed the actress was released Monday, July 3, from a federal prison in Dublin, California, near San Francisco.
The news means that Mack served two of the three years.
Allison Mack was initially facing up to 17 years in prison, but cooperating with prosecutors pursuing a case against ringleader Keith Raniere helped her secure a shorter sentence.
Before her sentencing, Mack wrote a statement to the judge expressing "remorse and guilt" for her actions.

Austin Majors, best known for his work on NYPD Blue, has died.
TMZ first reported the news, revealing that the 27-year-old died while staying at a homeless facility in Los Angeles.
The outlet said that there's "no foul play suspected," and it's "believed he may have ingested a fatal amount of fentanyl."
Majors' family shared a statement with People shortly after the news broke.
The statement calls Majors "a loving, artistic, brilliant, and kind human being. Austin took great joy and pride in his acting career."
"He was an active Eagle Scout and graduated Salutatorian in High School."
"He went on to graduate from USC's School of Cinematic Arts with a passion of directing and music producing."
"Austin's younger sister, Kali, says her fondest memories with Austin were growing up on set with him, volunteering at events with 'Kids With a Cause', and backpacking together," the statement continues.

With its list of new releases for June 2022, HBO Max is joining in what should be a TV summer to remember.
Not content to let Netflix’s Stranger Things or Prime Video’s The Boys to dominate the summer TV landscape, HBO is coming through with a new season of one of its big hits. Westworld season 4 is set to premiere June 26 on both HBO and HBO Max. What will this season of the increasingly confusing sci-fi drama be about? Per HBO’s synopsis it will be “A dark odyssey about the fate of sentient life on earth.” So you know, only that.
Irma Vep is the only other Max Original of note this month. Based on a 1996 cult classic of the same name, this limited series stars Alicia Vikander as a disillusioned movie star looking to remake the early 20th century French silent film serial Les Vampires.

Allison Mack is headed to jail.
The former Smallville star was sentenced to three years in prison Wednesday on charges she manipulated women into becoming sex slaves for cult-like group Nxivm.
Mack had previously pleaded guilty to the charges and cooperated against the group's leader Keith Raniere and took responsibility for helping him create a secret group that brainwashed women who were branded with his initials.
“I made choices I will forever regret,” she said, before revealing had “remorse and guilt.”
She said that devoting herself to Raniere “was the biggest mistake and greatest regret of my life,” in a letter she had written ahead of her sentencing.
“I am sorry to those of you that I brought into Nxivm,” she wrote.
“I am sorry I ever exposed you to the nefarious and emotionally abusive schemes of a twisted man.”
She reportedly apologized to the victims in court on Wednesday.

Hulu has released its list of content arriving at the streaming service this June, as well as everything that will no longer be available to watch there after June 30.
At the top of the must-watch list is season three of Hulu Original “The Handmaid’s Tale,” which was notably pushed back to a June premiere date in order to ensure it would “maintain the quality it has,” Craig Erwich, Hulu’s Senior Vice President of Originals, said at the Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour in February. The first three episodes of the new season premiere on Hulu June 5, after which new episodes will be released every Wednesday.
Another Hulu Original of note is “The Weekly” series from The New York Times, coming June 3. Each half-hour episode will feature a Times journalist investigating one of today’s most pressing issues, with new issues being explored each week.

Julia Roberts is looking very blue these days.

<< Continued from #1-1112. World War Z (June 21): With the success of AMC's The Walking Dead and February's Warm Bodies ($66.2 million), it's safe to say that zombies are very popular right now. World War Z is the first big-budget aspiring blockbuster featuring the creatures, though casual audiences may have a tough time associating the movie's fast-moving swarms of CGI zombies with the slow-moving ones they are used to. With star Brad Pitt and what's sure to be a hefty marketing effort from Paramount, World War Z will likely do fine, but opening right after Man of Steel is going to keep this down. (Domestic: $135 million, Foreign: $285 million)13. Epic (May 24): Action-oriented animated movies (as opposed to comedic ones) aren't historically all that successful, and Epic's story calls to mind notorious animated bomb The Ant Bully ($28.1 million). Still, from a scheduling perspective, Epic is in great shape: Memorial Day weekend...

With his production company Playtone, Tom Hanks and his producing partner Gary Goetzman have helped mount a string of ambitious and rightly celebrated historical mini-series from Band of Brothers to John Adams and The Pacific. Each offered an insight into a tumultuous time in American history, unfolding the trials and tribulations of the U.S.'s second president and the struggles of the noble soldiers who fought in World War II. To date, Playtone's film slate has typically been more geared toward kid flicks, with offerings like The Ant Bully, City of Ember and Where the Wild Things Are. But the production company's latest deal has them primed to bring the kind of expansive and poignant storytelling displayed in their miniseries to a new feature about the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Variety reports Hanks and Goetzman will produce Parkland an indie drama that's title refers to the...

After lending their voices to the animated film The Ant Bully in 2006, acclaimed Oscar-winning actresses Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep are acting together in a live-action movie now called August: Osage County. It's a dysfunctional family drama based on Tracy Letts' Pulitzer Prize winning book and Tony award-winning play, and with Streep and Roberts playing mother and daughter and George Clooney and Grant Heslov producing, more Oscar nominations are sure to come. But the movie has just added some significant talent in the supporting actress category with Abigail Breslin and Juliette Lewis joining. Letts wrote the screenplay, and John Wells (The Company You Keep) is set to direct. The story follows three daughters who return home to be with their drug-addicted mother (Streep) after their alcoholic father disappears, and all sorts of family secrets are revealed. Lewis will play another of Streep's daughters alongside Roberts while Breslin will play...

Every movie, every television show, every book, every play, and every musical needs to have internal logic inherent in its creation. No matter how ridiculous the premise is—a man dresses as a bat to fight crime, a high-school teacher resorts to cooking methamphetamines to make money, and so on—there must be logic present. If there isn’t, the story falls apart as soon as you think about it. The real trick that some filmmakers or other creative types can employ is not making you think about the story while you’re experiencing it. As an example, while I loved Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, and can’t wait to watch it over and over on Blu-ray, does it hold up to intense scrutiny?...

Sherlock is repeated, but you're mainly going to have to make do with lots of films in this week's UK TV preview...
TV addicts and aficionados take note that, outside of a slew of good and great films, this week's UK schedule is nearly devoid of new programming on popular channels.
In fact, the only show worth mentioning that we could find is a repeat. Can that one show carry the weight of the waiting and watching couch occupiers across the UK?
It can when it's Sherlock! BBC1 will repeat the excellent series that starred Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch, and despite their obvious talents, probably played a role in bringing the two to a more worldwide audience in the eagerly awaited forthcoming The Hobbit film.
We couldn't say enough about how good this new production of the sleuthing pair was, and what a fantastic revelation was to be found...

Neil Gaiman's Doctor Who episode, Caprica finishing off its run in the UK, and South Park season 15 kicks off. Plus an animated feature worth checking out...
This weekend brings us what is likely to be the most eagerly anticipated episode of Doctor Who since the series relaunched or the then unknown property of Matt Smith's Time Lord talents were yet to be tested.
Saturday, May 14th delivers the fourth episode in the sixth series, and its intriguing title, The Doctor's Wife, is only a faint indicator of the real draw, and that's that the episode's been written by Neil Gaiman.
We have a spoiler-free review that may hold clues to just how excited we are about the episode, and even better, an interview with its author, Neil Gaiman, here.
We're as eager to hear what everyone thinks of it as to rewatch it again tomorrow night, and we'll...

2011 marks the tenth year the Oscars have singled out animated films for their own Best Animated Feature Oscar and I started looking over the list of nominees and began to wonder how they might match up with public opinion.
In ten years 34 films have been nominated for the Best Animated Feature Oscar, eight of those nominees have been Pixar films, five of which went on to win with Cars and Monsters, Inc. serving as the two that didn't end up taking home the gold. So Pixar has obviously been crowned king by the Academy, and this year I think we're all expecting Toy Story 3 to make it six wins for the animated studio. Does this mean the top eight animated films over the past ten years were produced by Pixar?
Of course, this isn't an exact science. Looking at only the Academy's animated nominees means several films aren't even...

Exclusive: I got a chance to talk with voice actor Zachary Eisen, who voiced the lead protagonist in one of my favorite cartoons, Avatar: The Last Airbender. Zachary began voice acting at the age of six with the role of Andrew of the Nick Jr. show Little Bill. Zachary continued work through Nickelodeon to voice Pablo the Penguin in the popular children series The Backyardigans and, of course, the main character Aang in the very popular animated series Avatar: the Last Airbender which recently received a live action adaption directed by M. Night Shyamalan. He also voiced the character Lucas Nickle in the film The Ant Bully. How did you get into voice acting? So a really long time ago [when] I was about four years old and I had a really raspy kind of voice and I was told it was a good...

The Disappearance Of Alice Creed The Disappearance of Alice Creed opens with two men prepping for what we can only assume—given the title of the film (despite any revelations about its meaning that may come later)—is a kidnapping. We assume correctly. They pull a girl into a van, tie her to a bed, strip her of all her clothes, snap photos of her, and put new clothes on her. All of this takes places without any dialogue, or any understanding of who these people are, how they know each other, or what their motivations are. The less you know about what happens from that point forward, the better. This is the sort of assured, smartly...

Viewers on both sides of the Atlantic have been sounding off about David Tennant's send-off from "Doctor Who" in the two-part "The End of Time" story that concluded last week. "Dw" comic creators Tony Lee and Pia Guerra were among them.
"Avatar" is still on everyone's minds as well, though, with the film globally passing the $1 billion mark. Comics industry tweeters have been pointing out similarities to "The Last Samurai" and "Dances With Wolves" for a while, but Pj Holden was the first I've seen who drew a parallel between James Cameron's film and "The Ant Bully." An “Anti-Smoking In Movies” campaign started making the rounds last Wednesday with a moving billboard that reads, “Which movie studios will cause me to smoke this summer?” It also drives traffic to their Facebook page, which includes statistics and video clips that support their efforts.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, the California Youth Advocacy Network, and the American Medical Association Alliance all partnered for the push to raise MPAA ratings for movies that include smoking and discourage it in future films. The roving sign will make routine stops in front of the major movie studios and the company with the worst record of summer smoking films will incur a strategically-placed, scathing billboard in September.
Ironically, the picture on the right shows the ad making a stop at Walt Disney Studios, which in July 2007 became the first studio to “discourage depictions of cigarette smoking.” Nor is the group...

Wednesday morning at 3am I got the best and worst news yet about my growing collection of high-definition home video titles: Warner Brothers is offering a brand new program where consumers can exchange their old HD DVDs for Blu-rays at a cost of around five bucks. For a person like yours truly whose apartment has been referred to as a "crack den for cinephiles," this is obviously a great thing, since it means that I can replace classic movies like The Ant Bully and Scooby-Doo: The Movie without having to eat the cost of two high-def discs.
But for a person like yours truly who not only embraced HD DVD wholeheartedly, buying as many titles as possible just weeks before the format was officially abandoned by the studios, but then immediately replaced virtually all titles in my collection of any real value when I later got a Blu-ray player, this...

The Associated Press is reporting that Ricardo Montalban died this morning at the age of 88. He was at his home, although no cause of death was given. Montalban will probably be known to many as Mr. Roarke in Fantasy Island, but if you’re a geek like me, you’ll always remember him as James T. Kirk’s nemesis, Khan, in Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan. He was also deliciously evil and hilarious in the first Naked Gun film. More recently, Montalban turned his attention to animated series and properties aimed at children, making appearances in Kim Possible, Family Guy, The Ant Bully, and the Spy Kids series.
I’ll be shouting out a “Khaaaaan!!!!” tonight for old time’s sake, but it won’t be out of bitterness and anger like Shatner’s utterance. Instead, it will be a lamentation for the loss of one of cinema’s all-time greatest villains.

There's been an interesting trend in CGI animated films over the last few years - they've become commonplace. TORONTO -- Imax Corp. on Tuesday said Warner Bros. Pictures' Happy Feet danced its way to a record opening weekend of $2.4 million for a digitally-remastered animated movie unspooling on its giant screens.
Toronto-based Imax said the $2.4 million bow came from 79 large format screens, or a three-day per-screen average of approximately $30,000 from Friday to Sunday, Nov. 19.
"We are thrilled with the opening weekend success of Happy Feet in both conventional theatres and Imax theatres," Dan Fellman, president of domestic distribution at Warner Bros. Pictures in a statement said of the combined $41.5 million gross for the animated movie this past weekend.
The record opening for Happy Feet marks a reversal for Imax, which recently posted disappointing numbers for Warner Bros.' Ant Bully.
Imax will next release 20th Century Fox's Night at the Museum before looking ahead to 2007 when it has the blockbusters Spiderman 3 from Sony and Warner Bros' Harry Potter 5 on its release slate.
Imax currently operates around 280 theaters in 40 countries.

Sixteen full-length animated features have qualified to compete in the best animated feature film category at the 79th annual Academy Awards.
Under Academy rules, the full house of qualifiers means that the Academy could nominate as many as five films in the category when the nominees are announced Jan. 23. It's the first time since 2002 that that has been the case.
The list includes lots of movies with talking critters: Buena Vista's The Wild, DreamWorks Animation's Flushed Away and Over the Hedge, Paramount Pictures' Barnyard, Sony Pictures' Open Season, Warner Bros. Pictures' The Ant Bully and Happy Feet and 20th Century Fox's Ice Age: The Meltdown.
Other titles that made the cut include Buena Vista and Pixar Animation's Cars, Fox's Everyone's Hero, Sony's Monster House, and Universal's Curious George, as well as Warner Independent Pictures' indie offering A Scanner Darkly.
Several films from abroad also qualified: Director Luc Besson's Arthur and the Invisibles, set for release from the Weinstein Co. and MGM; Satoshi Kon's Paprika, from Sony Pictures Classics; and Christian Volckman's Renaissance, from Miramax Films.

It was no race to the top spot of the boxoffice this past weekend, as Sony Pictures' Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby won the boxoffice derby in a landslide victory. The NASCAR satire starring Will Ferrell earned a remarkable $47 million, lifting the weekend's boxoffice a stunning 18% from the same period last year. Paramount Pictures' animated flick Barnyard was also a solid performer, earning $15.8 million for the three-day frame. Lionsgate was successful in drawing in the horror fans for its screamfest The Descent, with an $8.9 million opener, though Miramax had a tough time luring in adults for its drama The Night Listener, earning only $3.5 million at the boxoffice. Miami Vice, the No. 1 film at the boxoffice last weekend, had a tough time bringing in the crowds for its second session. The Michael Mann-directed film was off a steep 60% for its sophomore session, earning $10 million for a two-week cume of $46 million. Warner Bros. Pictures didn't have it any easier at the boxoffice for its second session of The Ant Bully. The animated film from Jimmy Neutron creator-director John A. Davis fell 54% to earn a paltry $3 million. The film, which during the week had some strong numbers, has earned $18 million after 10 days of release.
Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby roared out of the starting gate Friday. The NASCAR-set comedy starring Will Ferrell and released by Sony Pictures grossed an estimated $18.1 million Friday, according to the boxoffice tracking site boxofficemojo.com. That sets up the movie for an opening weekend in the high $40 million to low $50 million range. The animated Barnyard from Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies also posted encouraging numbers, capturing the second spot with an estimated Friday gross of $5.5 million, more than double the $2.6 million Friday opening of Warner Bros. Pictures' The Ant Bully last weekend.
