It may have nothing to do with the fantastical creations of George Lucas, but in terms of achieving blockbuster-sized thrills, Skywalkers: A Love Story succeeds on a level where so many Hollywood productions fail. Following the trials and tribulations in love and play of a Russian influencer couple who have dedicated their life to illegally scaling the world’s largest skyscrapers, its immersive cinematography places us in nail-biting heights right alongside them. Following in the footsteps of the rousing Man on Wire and Free Solo, with a bit of Mission: Impossible-like espionage thrown in, the footage is about as thrilling and vertigo-inducing as one could imagine. Like another Netflix release––last year’s The Deepest Breath, which captured the story of free divers plumbing the depths of the ocean––Jeff Zimbalist and Maria Bukhonina’s new documentary attempts to elucidate the thought process behind these daredevil theatrics. Yet it...

When writing fiction of any sort, one thing to keep in mind is that most audiences really love dogs. A guy can murder multiple people, and viewers will have an easier time forgiving him for it than if he'd harmed a dog in any way. There's a reason why John Wick can keep the audience on his side after having a murder count in the triple digits; someone killed his dog once, so now we'll follow him to the end of the Earth. If he meets another character with a dog they love, no matter how antagonistic they may initially seem towards Wick, we know he'll form a trustworthy bond with them.
Even if the dog isn't intentionally killed, some viewers still refuse to watch any film that treats its dogs poorly. That's why the "Does the Dog Die?" website is still so popular — the death of a dog (Aka...

Sort of what Dimension Films represented back in the heyday of Miramax era, Tom Quinn and Jason Janego are proving that RADiUS-twc is a smart pick-up, fully fledged label that is in it for the long-term and a partnership with Jason Blum is a nice dice roll. Radius, the Duplass Bros. and Blumhouse Prods. are teaming on not one film, but a trilogy of films surrounding the recently SXSW preemed Creep by helmer Patrick Brice. A theatrical release is expected at the end of the year and look for this to hit fantasy fests in the summer.

Welcome back to Briarcliff for episode two, where the skirts and the body count rise, and we begin to tease out a few themes from the madness. Last season was a free-for-all of terror, both natural and super, but this time around the show seems to be focusing most of its energy on character development and themes of social justice. We’ve got Kit and Alma and their interracial marriage, Wendy and Lana battling homophobia, and Sister Jude and her love-hate relationship with “the patriarchal male” (her words). While I tentatively applaud Ryan Murphy and company for taking on some meaty issues (other than the actual meat Mary Eunice feeds to the monsters), I know that watching a Murphy show is a little like keeping Bloodyface as a pet: love him, if you will, for his piercing blue eyes and skill with a bone-saw,...

Nothing makes a better documentary subject than crazy. Whether they're about socialite shut-ins or deranged cult leaders or just some guy who decides to eat nothing but fast food for a month, documentaries are a great home for the insane. Best of all is when a documentary invites us inside the madness to experience it for ourselves, then forces to reconsider whether that perspective is really all that crazy after all. "The Elephant in the Living Room," about the danger, and also the appeal, of keeping wild animals as pets, is such a documentary.
Generally, I'm of the opinion that anyone who willingly keeps a deadly animal in their home is kind of nuts. And if said animal escapes and kills them, that's not a tragedy; that's fodder for The Darwin Awards. But sometimes these animals get loose and harm others, and that is a tragedy, one that's happening with...

As previously reported, Dimension Films recently made the surprise announcement that, after years of trying to set up a remake, a ninth film in the original Hellraiser series was in production. Now Bloody Disgusting have unearthed the scoop that Hellraiser: Revelations has cast a new Pinhead. It's Stephan Smith Collins. Nope, us neither. He had a small role in The Darwin Awards with David Arquette a few years ago, and his CV also includes films called Where's My Stuff? and Come Fly With Me Nude.Doug Bradley was reportedly not at all interested in reprising his signature iconic role (from the Clive Barker original and seven times subsequently) as the creepily elegant, somewhat pierced leader of the demon cenobites, and after Hellworld, you can see why. Revelations, on a tight schedule and an even tighter budget, seems to be in production largely to stop Dimension's hold on the Hellraiser rights from lapsing.

So, back in June, we all had a chance to hear a rumor about Peter Sarsgaard’s possible involvement in a Bill Monroe’s biopic, written by Callie Khouri.
Today, we’re here to report that Sarsgaard’s wife and Maggie Gyllenhaal (Nanny McPhee Returns, Crazy Heart, Away We Go, The Dark Knight) will be the part of the upcoming project as well.
Maggie Gyllenhaal described her role this way:
“Bill Monroe, who invented bluegrass music, had a kind of Sid and Nancy style affair with this woman Bessie Lee Mauldin throughout his life and T-Bone Burnett’s going to do the music and Callie Khouri – who wrote Thelma & Louise – wrote the script so we’re going to do that together.”
Not bad at all! Especially with that Oscar winning team on board, and Finn Taylor (The Darwin Awards) in charge for directing the whole thing!

Peter Sarsgaard is set to star in a biopic of famed bluegrass musician Bill Monroe according to The Wrap.
Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys band pioneered the genre in a career that spanned six decades and nearly twenty albums. The film is expected to follow the mold of Johnnie Cash biopic "Walk The Line" and Finn Taylor ("Cherish," "The Darwin Awards") will direct.
Sarsgaard has brought Callie Khouri ("Thelma And Louise") onto the independently-financed production to re-write an early script draft. The pair's other halves, musician T. Bone Burnett and actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, both worked on "Crazy Heart" and Burnett may be involved in a similar capacity here.

Academy voters are already putting in their ballots for these two performances: Meryl Streep has signed on to play former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher for director Phyllida Lloyd, who Streep worked with on Mamma Mia!, while Sean Penn has signed on the play Dorian “Doc” Paskowitz, the patriarch of “surfing’s first family.” Streep’s film is called The Iron Lady, the script written by Abi Morgan, co-financed by Pathe and Film4 and described as a “story of a woman who smashed through the barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male-dominated world. The story concerns power and the price that is paid for power, and is a surprising and insightful portrait of an extraordinary and complex woman.” [THR] Thatcher made as many enemies as she did friends (if not more), and was regarded by many to be brutal in her tactics and conservation decisions. Streep should destroy the role,...

Well, um, actually a pretty nice little Saturday, we're going to go to Home Depot. Yeah, buy some wallpaper, maybe get some flooring, stuff like that. Maybe Bed, Bath, & Beyond, I don't know, I don't know if we'll have enough time. First up, Deadline reports Ashley Greene (The Twilight Saga) will star along Miley Cyrus in Lol. Greene will play Cyrus' nemesis in the remake of the 2009 French film Laughing Out Loud. The story follows a mother, Anne, and daughter, Lola who begin bonding after Lola's mom "accidentally" reads her teenage daughter's racy journal, and realizes just how wide their communication gap has grown. Read on! Second, The Wrap reports that Peter Sarsgaard (Knight & Day, An Education) is attached to star in a biopic of bluegrass musician Bill Monroe. The film, directed by Finn Taylor (The Darwin Awards) is apparently quite the passion project ...

It seems like every time Winona Ryder tries to kick start her acting career she makes the wrong choice. If you were to be kind, you'd recognize Ryder's last good performance in "Girl, Interrupted" a decade ago. "He's Just Not That Into You" is a great title. Born from a "Sex in the City" episode, it's adorned a bestseller (by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo) and as a phrase has quickly wormed its way into the lexicon. Now it's got its own movie, too, opening this Friday and starring a slew of stars including Jennifer Aniston, Ben Affleck, Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Connelly, Ginnifer Goodwin, Scarlett Johansson and Justin Long. What it does not have, at least in book form, is a story. "Hjntiy" is a dating advice book, a guide for women who can't get it through their heads that the dude they're interested in isn't reciprocating. It's long on helpful tips and sarcastic quips, but not necessarily on plot or character developments. That's an extra-heavy burden for the film's screenwriters, Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein, who must fashion an entire story that can...

NEW YORK -- Matthew Lillard will star in the Lighthouse Entertainment 1980s-set teen comedy Endless Bummer, playing a surf shop owner who helps a group of teens track down a prized stolen surfboard.
The actor joins rocker Joan Jett, Khan Chittenden (Introducing the Dwights) and Jane Leeves (Frasier) for the feature. He plays a veteran surfer who built the board and joins its current owner and friends on a road trip from Ventura, Calif., to the San Fernando Valley to get it back.
Bummer is based on the real-life experiences of screenwriter John 'J.D.' Drury. Lillard joins the production of director Sam Pillsbury's feature this week.
Lighthouse's Steven Siebert (The Darwin Awards, The Rookie) is producing the film with Drury, Todd Wiseman and John Sclimenti (Riding in Vans With Boys). Rosemary Marks ("thirteen") is co-producing.
Vans Warped Tour founder Kevin Lyman will executive produce with Darren Quon. The Bummer soundtrack will include new covers of '80s songs from several Vans Warped Tour artists.
"This is a genuine story of a pivotal day for a group of young Ventura surfers in 1984," Siebert said.

20th Century Fox believes in the Tooth Fairy. In a deal worth $1 million-$2 million, the studio has bought a family comedy project from actor-writer Jim Piddock and comedy writing duo Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel. Jason Blum is producing. Ganz and Mandel will start writing the screenplay, which follows a guy's guy who is forced to serve time as a tooth fairy, including wearing the outfit. Piddock wrote the treatment, then hooked up with Blum via his manager, Lighthouse Entertainment's Steven Siebert; Blum and Siebert worked on The Darwin Awards together. PARK CITY -- As the 2006 Sundance Film Festival wound down, a final flurry of acquisition activity saw ThinkFilm take worldwide rights to Ryan Fleck's drama Half Nelson; Roadside Attractions and Samuel Goldwyn Films jointly acquire North American rights for mid-six figures to comedian-turned-writer-director Bob Goldthwait's provocative relationship comedy Stay; and Bauer Martinez Distribution tied up final details on its acquisition of North American rights to Finn Taylor's comedy The Darwin Awards. Half Nelson, which premiered in the festival's Dramatic Competition section, stars Ryan Gosling as an idealistic young junior high school teacher in New York who befriends a young girl, newcomer Shareeka Epps, after she discovers his crack addiction. It was purchased for less than $1 million plus a hefty percentage of the gross for the filmmakers, said sources close to the negotiations. "The deal was based on their passion for the film," producer Jamie Patricof said. "They support fresh filmmaking voices and daring films like 'The Aristocrats.' "...

- Buzz Kill Yesterday, I focused on must need items and today I’ll focus on annoying stuff. My number uno pet peeve are those who open their crack berries every 45 minutes or so. During industry/press screenings it’s every 5 minutes. Not sure how some folks evaluate films while write emails – but it I more disturbing than a cellphone ring. Number 2 pet peeve are hangovers. I’m old now – note to self bring aspirins. Finally, next on the list are odd screening times for films that have the most buzz. Joey Lauren Adams’ Come Early MorningRead review here. PARK CITY -- As the 2006 Sundance Film Festival wound down, Roadside Attractions and Samuel Goldwyn Films jointly acquired North American rights for mid-six figures to comedian-turned-writer-director Bobcat Goldthwait's provocative relationship comedy Stay, which proved a popular hit with festival audiences. And Bauer Martinez Distribution tied up final details on its acquisition of North American rights to Finn Taylor's comedy The Darwin Awards. Stay tells the raunchy tale of a high school teacher who harbors a dark sexual secret from her past that she is terrified to reveal to her fiance. When she decides to bare all, she must deal with the consequences. Because it is unclear whether the film will earn an R or an NC-17 rating, the bidding on the film attracted only independent distributors, who, because they are not MPAA members, will have the option to release the film unrated. (Roadside released the 2004 Sundance docu Super Size Me without a rating.) Goldthwait took the time to meet all interested distributors, but Roadside and Goldwyn had the advantage of having released Sarah Silverman: Jesus Is Magic. Goldthwait and Silverman are cohorts on the late-night TV show Jimmy Kimmel Live, where Goldthwait is a director.
