TikTok‘s first concert, rocked out by artists like Cardi B, Peso Pluma, Charlie Puth, Niall Horan, and Anitta, was the platform’s biggest livestreamed event to date, it says.
9.6 million people tuned in to catch In the Mix live from Arizona’s Sloan Park Dec. 10. TikTok also did three subsequent rebroadcasts of the concert–which was sponsored by Paramount and Coca-Cola–and viewership for those combined + the 9.6 million came out to a total of over 33.5 million for the entire event.
TikTok’s made a few moves over the last couple of years to grow its livestreaming sector, sometimes with…interesting results, but no broadcast has reached this magnitude.
In addition to established stars, In the Mix featured creators from Elevate, the program where TikTok identifies and incubates up-and-coming talent posting their original songs on its platform. Elevaters who took the stage included Isabel Larosa, Kaliii, Lu Kala, and Sam Barber.

Singer-composer Charlie Puth wants to take his fans behind the magic of creating music. The singer is all set to headline TikTok’s ‘In the Mix event’. The singer revealed that his headlining performance at the social media network’s inaugural concert is going to emphasise “showing the layers” behind the creation of some of his biggest tracks, reports People magazine.
“I think in a traditional sense, it’s going to be a show of mine,” he said. “So, I’m going to play old songs and new songs and maybe some songs that are not released yet to make it fun because why not? But the biggest takeaway I want people to get from watching me up there is the creation of music and how music is made. Kind of like what I do on these short little videos on TikTok.”

Usher and Keke Palmer are ready to break the internet again. On Aug. 16, the "Good Good" singer released his new single "Boyfriend" along with a Vegas-set music video starring the "Nope" actor. In the visual, Palmer assists Usher by singing along to lyrics like, "Somebody said that your boyfriend's lookin' for me / Oh, that's cool, that's cool / Well, he should know I'm pretty easy to find / Just look for me wherever he sees you." The two also show off some impressive moves as they dance around a casino in matching outfits.
The day before the video dropped, Usher posted a trailer for it on social media and wrote, "When fantasies become reality..." He followed that up with another promo post on Aug. 16, writing on Twitter, "Nothing that happens in Vegas stays in Vegas..." alongside a link to the video. When Usher serenaded Keke Palmer during his Las Vegas residency last month, the moment set a sector of the internet ablaze. It was actually Palmer’s boyfriend at the time, Darius Jackson, who struck the match when he tweeted to complain about her sheer dress and black bodysuit. “It’s the outfit tho.. you a mom,” he wrote about Palmer, with whom he has a six-month-old baby. But the joke is on him. Not only is she a mom fully embracing this new era of her life — she’s also...

Keke Palmer seems to be shading Darius Jackson with her appearance in Usher’s new music video.
Last month, Jackson publicly called out Palmer, the mother of their son, for the outfit she wore to Usher’s Las Vegas residency show, basically saying it wasn’t mom-appropriate, especially after she got invited on stage by Usher so he could serenade her to his hit “There Goes My Baby” — a regular stunt during his shows.
Usher reacted to the incident after Jackson’s comment sparked online controversy, calling it “a pop culture moment” that is “worth talking about.”

“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” has an enviable batting average when it comes to Emmy Awards for music supervision — the past two have gone to the team of show creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino and music supervisor Robin Urdang. But this year, the “Maisel” crew has its sights on the original song competition, unfamiliar territory for the Amazon Prime Video hit.
While the soundtrack to season three contains the showtunes, classical music, Klezmer and iconoclastic standards of the era, the showrunners set about creating a palette of new music for Shy Baldwin (LeRoy McClain), the singer for whom titular comedian Midge Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) serves as an opening act.
The creators sought to give Baldwin a unique musical personality, someone rooted in a ’50s crooner style with a taste for the burgeoning soul music, and tasked songwriters Thomas Mizer and Curtis Moore to listen to Johnny Mathis and Sam Cooke...

The new ABC comedy Mixed-Ish premieres on Sept. 24, and it should come as no surprise that national treasure Mariah Carey sings the catchy, funk-inflected theme song. "In the Mix" debuted at Popsugar and ABC's "Embrace Your Ish" event in La earlier this month with a splashy video that features the cast cutting a rug, along with cameos from Carey's 8-year-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe, who also helped out on vocals. Mariah Carey and Tracee Ellis Ross embraced their “ish” at Tuesday night’s series premiere event for ABC’s “Mixed-ish” by reflecting on how their biracial identity makes working on the new show even more personal.
“I’m just so thankful that this show exists,” Carey told the assembled crowd during a Q&a with series creator Kenya Barris. “To everyone that’s a fan of the show and of the topic and of the fact that we’ve evolved to a place where we can actually enlighten people, and without going into a whole long drawn out thing, it’s like representation is so important.”
“I actually cried when I watched the pilot,” she shared. “Obviously the humor is all there, but how displaced they are and it just made me feel like, that’s exactly how I felt. I didn’t grow up in a commune, but I might as well have.

The black-ish universe is expanding yet again, and we can't wait to see what the new world has in store for us.
Created by Kenya Barris, black-ish follows the lives of an upper-middle-class African American family as they comically attempt to navigate the social pressures of being the only family of color in their neighborhood.
The show's first spin-off series, Grown-ish, follows the oldest child Zoey Johnson (played by Yara Shadidi) off to college.
The newest spin-off series, mixed-ish, is a prequel that takes place in the 80's and chronicles the early years of black-ish mom Rainbow Cinnamon "Bow" Johnson (played by Tracee Ellis Ross).
The show's theme song, "In the Mix", was written and performed by none other than Mariah Carey, who was excited to take part in the project as a bi-racial woman working in the entertainment industry.

After much speculation as to whether Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie would be returning to judge “American Idol” on ABC, the network has confirmed the trio will all be back once more to search for America’s next musical superstar.
ABC and series producer Fremantle had been in discussions regarding ways to bring down costs on the show, especially given Perry’s astounding $25 million a year salary, but the lineup for the show’s third season on the network will remain unchanged.
Perry has been making headlines recently after a jury found that she and her song “Dark Horse” infringed on the copyright of Flame’s song “Joyful Noise” in a $2.78 million decision. Perry and her co-writers called the decision “a travesty of justice.”

For nearly all of 2017, Kumail Nanjiani has been promoting The Big Sick, the semi-autobiographical romantic comedy about a standup comedian who, against his Pakistani family's wishes, falls in love with a white girl, who then falls into a coma. Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler wrote the hit “Janie’s Got A Gun” 28 years ago, but he always knew he wanted to help girls in need.
Now, the singer is opening Janie’s House, a home for abused young women, located just outside of Atlanta, Georgia.
“It was always in my heart to maybe have a house, a Janie’s House to take care of young and abused girls,” Tyler, 69, says in an Instagram video posted on Thursday. “Well, guess what? Check this out! We did it. With the help of Youth Villages and all. We got it going on now.

A column chronicling conversations and events on the awards circuit. You know the season is starting to roar when actual awards results start to roll in. This week The Gothams put Call Me by Your Name in the Best Picture game, the National Board tf Review went gaga for The Post, and the New York Film Critics anointed Lady Bird. In the mix and getting various honors from at least two of the three groups were such contenders as Get Out, The Florida Project, Phantom Thread, T…...

There are not many filmmakers with both the commercial and critical clout that can get studio executives climbing over each other to work with them. However, Quentin Tarantino is one of those filmmakers. After having spent his entire career working with Harvey Weinstein, the director is now a free agent for his next movie….which is not what you think it is.
“It’s not Charles Manson, it’s 1969,” he recently explained about his movie (via Thompson On Hollywood).

Quentin Tarantino spent his entire career under Harvey Weinstein‘s umbrella, and has been candid about what he knew about the former mogul’s behavior and his regrets about not taking action. The scandal is still unfolding, but Tarantino is turning his attention back to his work and preparing his next film about the Manson murders. It would seem that regardless of his association with Weinstein, he’s still one of the hottest filmmakers in town, with major studios and A-listers lining up to collaborate with him.

I know this column is called Saturday Savings, but we just couldn't help ourselves this week. Céline Dion's incredible outfit (minus any discounts) costs over $108,000—largely in part to that silver and gold Himalayan crocodile Hermès Birkin bag she's toting. (To put things in perspective: a similar Birkin happens to be the world's most expensive bag at $432,000, but Céline's most likely went for around $100K.) In the mix are her $1,380 crystal-embellished Gucci sunglasses, her $5,050 Kanye West x Giuseppe Zannotti sandals, a $680 Céline white shirt and lastly the $1,945—now on sale for $778 (they're 60 percent off,...

Warner Bros. continues to push the boulder of a live-action “Akira” remake up a hill, even if it seems the project keeps rolling back down. The film was close to shooting in 2012, but the studio shut down production just before filming was going to start, and ever since then news about the project has come in fits and starts, but without anything gaining solid momentum. But it appears there’s now a more concerted effort being made.

It’s been a long, sometimes rocky road to “Deadpool 2,” but it looks like things are starting to roll more smoothly. Fans got a very early teaser/short sketch film to hold them over for now, and the movie has finally found a Domino in Zazie Beetz. However, Cable remains another big character to cast, and a new name has entered the mix for the role.

It looks like “The Girl In The Spider’s Web” will give co-producers Amy Pascal and Scott Rudin a chance to make the Lisbeth Salander movie they wanted to do, before butting heads with David Fincher on “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.” Almost every aspect of that movie, from the budget to the marketing, was a constant battle, but the friction arguably first started over the casting of Rooney Mara.

It took more than a decade of grinding it out both on television and at the movies, but David Harbour finally got the due he deserved and a helluva a role in last year’s breakout Netflix hit, “Stranger Things.” As a result, more doors are likely opening for the actor, though he’s no stranger to blockbusters, having popped up in “Suicide Squad,” “The Green Hornet,” “Quantum Of Solace,” and “The Equalizer.” Still, none of those projects are “Deadpool 2.”

After a week of high drama, things have quieted a bit around “Deadpool 2.” With Tim Miller gone, the search for a replacement director is on, with “John Wick” co-helmer David Leitch reportedly the frontrunner for the gig. And until someone signs on the dotted line, there’s probably not much in the way of casting that’s going to happen, but that doesn’t mean that screen tests or auditions will stop, and a few new names have surfaced as contenders for the role of Domino.

Usher is in the middle of a promotional run for his upcoming film, Hands of Stone, but he’s still finding time to get stuff done on the music side of things, too. The R&B star has revealed that his eighth full-length record, Hard II Love, will be released on September 16th through RCA Records.
Hard II Love was originally known to fans as Flawed for a while, but Usher spoke back in June to note that the title wasn’t final. The fifteen track album is now available for pre-order on digital outlets and includes instant downloads of the four songs released thus far: “Missin U,” “No Limit,” “Crash,” and “Champions.”

Welcome to another “Preview Reel” column, where we look at the week’s upcoming wide release movies. The dog days of August are officially upon us and things really slow down at the cineplexes. Suicide Squad continues to dominate the box office, but three newcomers (all with an R-rating) look to take its crown. There’s the new horror flick, Don’t Breathe, from the director of 2013’s The Evil Dead, another Robert De Niro boxing movie, Hands of Stone, and the latest Jason Statham action vehicle, Mechanic: Resurrection.
Don’t Breathe
What we are excited about:
Besides The Conjuring 2, there has not been a worthy R-rated horror movie in theaters in quite some time. Director Fede Alvarez delivered the goods with his remake of The Evil Dead back in 2013 and showed audiences he is not afraid to go to some dark and violent places to get some scares.

Although his latest studio effort Skin was released just a few months ago, future bass forerunner Flume has already figured out the direction his next album will take. In a recent chat with In The Mix, the Australian producer talked openly about his plans regarding his future full length release, expressing his intent to explore a more sample heavy sound.
Now that I’ve put Skin out, I’m like… awesome! I’ve done my big, grandiose, clean record, with lots of big sawtooth sounds. Now I’m kind of bored of it, and I want to do lots of more sample-based stuff, like actual world sounds. So, like, maybe a vocal that’s been recorded and make it into a chord.

Canadian filmmaker and actor Paul Gross is no stranger to tacking tales of war. In 2008 he released "Passchendaele," his epic take on the titular battle, and now, eight years later, he's back with "Hyena Road," a new feature that takes on the contemporary, complicated war in Afghanistan. Read More: 'Demolition,' 'Spotlight,' And 'Hyena War' In The Mix To Open Tiff Starring Rossif Sutherland, Christine Horne, Nabil Elouahabi, Niamatullah Arghandabi, Allan Hawco, Clarke Johnson, and Gross himself, the drama follows Canadian troops in Afghanistan who weather Taliban attacks while struggling to complete construction on a crucial highway link. Here's the official synopsis: Three men, three different paths, caught in conflict but brought together to save lives: a highly skilled sniper who can’t think of his targets as human; an intelligence officer who has never killed while on duty; and a legendary Afghan warrior who left war behind but gets.

In naming Spotlight one of the best ensembles of 2016, we said, “Tom McCarthy’s procedural moves with the precision of a fine timepiece. Rarely does one find a film where all is tune, from the pacing, writing, direction and acting. Highlighting the heroic work of the Boston Globe’s Spotlight team, the group is headed by Robby Robinson (Michael Keaton) who risks life long friendships to get the story right. His team includes Mike Rezendes (played by a compulsive Mark Ruffalo), Sacha Pfeiffer (Rachel McAdams) and Matt Caroll (Brian d’Arcy James). Encouraged by a Boston outsider, editor Marty Baron (Live Schreiber), the team undertakes a long-term investigation of abuses in the Catholic Church. In the mix are the lawyers on both sides, played by Stanley Tucci and Billy Crudup. Rightfully overshadowing that other journalism docudrama, James Vanderbilt’s incompetent Truth, the difference here amongst many things is perhaps access:...

Say what you will about Tom Cruise as a person but as an actor and producer, he is one of the strongest performers in Hollywood. For the last 19 years, he has been responsible for Paramount Pictures’ Mission: Impossible franchise and has turned it into a goldmine. The fifth installment, Rogue Nation, arrives tomorrow in a combo pack from Paramount Home Entertainment just as people worry about the granddaddy of espionage franchises, James Bond.
I was not alone in feeling disappointed by Spectre, a lax story, a waste of Monica Bellucci, and boring set pieces. In comparison, the three major action sequences in Rogue Nation are fresher, more exciting, and still works on repeated watching.
Cruise set out at the beginning to honor Bruce Gellar’s creation but also add new flavors by insisting someone different direct each movie. Brian DePalma set the stage and satisfied fans while John Wu had...

A couple of weeks ago it was announced that three major actresses were up for the part of Gambit’s female lead, Belladonna Boudreaux aka Bella. In the mix were Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation’s Rebecca Ferguson, Mad Max: Fury Road’s Abbey Lee and Spectre actress Lea Seydoux. Now we’re hearing that Seydoux has seen off the formidable competition, and been made an offer to star in the film.
Bella is Gambit’s childhood sweetheart turned professional rival, and fully capable of taking her former beau to task. Her part in the mythology is pretty important, so expect Seydoux to feature heavily as the capable and physically oriented heroine. The actress has a role in Bond outing Spectre and briefly popped up in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, but is still best known for Cannes darling Blue is the Warmest Colour. Her part in Gambit will probably change that.

I thought the music industry had died, but it seems Hollywood is keeping it alive. This week Zac Efron brings his dreams to the decks in the Edm coming-of-age movie "We Are Your Friends," next year HBO drops the needle on the '70s set series "Vinyl" and this fall, Nicholas Hoult dips his toes into musical waters with "Kill Your Friends" and the first teaser trailer is here. A hefty total of at least ten new releases in theaters this week are also showing on VOD, including "10,000 Saints" and "Tom at the Farm," which received prominent festival play. In the mix were two decently performing films from the most recent Sundance. Noah Baumbach's latest "Mistress America" showed some initial promise in its New York/Los Angeles dates, while the mountain-climbing documentary "Meru" had strong results in a wider five-city release. Other recent Sundance premieres are getting attention as they expand, but both "The End of the Tour" and "The Diary of a Teenage Girl" are less than spectacular, with the former showing a better response. This has been a disappointing late summer for specialized films after mixed results earlier. Companies like Roadside Attractions that push wider releases earlier (not appropriate for all films, but the older appeal helped it gain traction for "Mr. Holmes") have...

Among Ravens isn’t nearly as deep as it thinks it is. Centering on a group of friends who reunite at a lakehouse for their annual Fourth of July get-together, it shoots for the wit and profundity of The Big Chill, but as the film progresses, it soon becomes clear that directors Russell Friedenberg and Randy Redroad are grappling around in the dark for a greater meaning that they lack the ability to articulate. So, instead of providing coherent ideas about the nature of aging, marriage, happiness and family, Among Ravens plays in disappointingly shallow waters, presenting viewers with one-note characters and a borderline nauseating amount of clunky bird metaphors. Unfortunately, just because it sounds profound, that doesn’t mean it actually is.
On hand to provide some of the film’s most aggravatingly artificial lines is Joey (Johnny Sequoyah), a 10-year-old girl whose development literally begins and ends at precocious.
