Sympatico, a production partnership combining the U.K.’s Argo Films and Malaysia’s Double Vision, is hatching a busy slate of film and TV productions that it says will be authentically Asian.
“Too often, Southeast Asia has been portrayed in a mix of styles on screen with, for example, iconic establishing shots of Kuala Lumpur ‘s Twin Towers soon giving way to a location that resembles Vietnam, mixed with Hong Kong by way of Vancouver,” said Min Lim, head of production at Double Vision and a partner in Sympatico.
The new venture starts life with six projects in active development, including two that it expects to put into production this year.
Double Vision is the production arm of the Vision New Media group that has over 35 years of experience in features, dramas, sitcoms, reality-game shows, magazine shows, documentaries, children’s programs and variety shows. Double Vision has in-house production and post-production facilities,...

Miami Dolphins fans greeted San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick with boos when he made it onto the field for Sunday’s game at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. Football rivals? Yes. But it didn’t help that Kaepernick made pro-Fidel Castro comments during a teleconference call Wednesday defending his choice three months earlier to wear a T-shirt depicting a meeting between Castro and Malcolm X with the words underneath, “Like minds think alike.” “One thing Fidel Castro did do is they have the highest literacy rate because they invest more in their education system than they do in their prison.

One of the perks of backing Vinegar Syndrome’s move into video on demand (the now-launched Exploitation.TV) was a double bill limited edition DVD of Len Anthony’s Murderous Intent and Fright House, offered only to those who, like me, backed the Indiegogo campaign. Now I’d never heard of either movie. But given the fact that – at least of as far the Nerdly team are concerned – Vinegar Syndrome can do no wrong. No matter how obscure or how bizarre the films, there’s always something interesting or intriguing about the titles they choose to release… whether that be sex, violence or (as in the case of these two Len Anthony movies) sheer insanity!
Murderous Intent
Stars: Ron Mychal, William Walters, Darrow Turner, Agnetta Eckmyr, Duey Graham, Jamet De Leon, Lauren Ruane | Written and Directed by Len Anthony

It’s hard to imagine Eddie Redmayne ever having difficulties as an actor. But in a delightfully candid conversation with Emma Stone, the Oscar-nominated actor reveals that he still had a lot to learn when it came to emoting on film rather than on stage.
News: Eddie Redmayne, This Is Your Year
While shooting his first film, the 2006 Australian thriller, Like Minds, it became evidently clear that Redmayne was very much projecting like he was on stage rather than appreciating the nuances afforded to him by film.
“I was playing this psychopath opposite Toni Collette, and we were doing this Silence of the Lambs scene,” Redmayne tells Stone in a conversation for The New York Times. “After an hour, she said, ‘Come and watch the playback.’ And thank God she did! My eyebrows were up to here, and I was projecting to the back of the room. Suddenly I realized why I’d never gotten a film...

I am sooo proud of our Palm Springs International Film Festival and equally happy that it's happening right in our own backyard! Just this morning, we heard that Eddie Redmayne, who is sweet and fabulous and a great actor to boot, is getting the Desert Palm Achievement Award for the 26th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (Psiff). He's being honored for his excellent portrayal of Stephen Hawking in "The Theory of Everything."
Redmayne will be joining previous Desert Palm Achievement Award recipients such as Jeff Bridges, Daniel Day-Lewis, Matthew McConaughey, and Sean Penn. And according to the press release, "in the years they were honored, Bridges, Day-Lewis, McConaughey, and Penn went on to win the Academy Award® for Best Actor."
Hhhmmmm, good karma? Premonition? Happenstance? I sure hope so!

Here's what I think happens. A film is seen. It's genuinely loved. Like minds attract and in the intimate atmosphere of a film festival, the love grows. But with the love comes a desire for others to love, too. So the selling starts. The passion takes hold. And soon, even defenders of the film are damaging it, taking defensive positions, not allowing it to breathe freely and make its way unsuspectingly to fresh eyes like it did theirs. This, I think, happens every year. And I'm not above it. A number of films are getting the advocacy treatment early on, siphoning...

One of the greatest things about film festivals, something that can even get you through the worst films, the lack of sleep, and the terrible B.O. of your fellow moviegoers, is the chance to discover new talent. You'll see absolute newcomers blast off into the stratosphere, or relatively well-known faces suddenly show off what they've always been capable of, and it's never less than a thrill.
And this year's Cannes Film Festival was no exception. With the festival now in the rear-view mirror, we've picked out five major talents who broke out at this year's festival, and whom we're certain we'll be hearing more from in the years to come. Check them out below, and if you were in Cannes, feel free to weigh in with your own suggestions too.

Cliché: a phrase, expression, or idea that has been overused to the point of losing its intended force or novelty, especially when at some time it was considered distinctively forceful or novel.
With Hollywood producing so many movies ever year, it is no surprise that they are often full of clichés. Jeff Smith created this montage under the Bottoms Up Productions label for acclaimed movie blog FilmDrunk.com, showing clips of some of the biggest movie clichés from a total of 102 films. The list of films are below the video. Enjoy!

Michael Martin's profile of Tom Sturridge is a perfect introduction to the young British actor:
It's been a few years since Sturridge got his break playing the son of Annette Bening's character in 2004's Being Julia. But he didn't mind the hiatus. "I want to do good stuff, which basically means waiting a bit," he says. Of course it's all timing: "If we did this interview next week, I'd say, ‘Listen, motherfucker, I'm playing Batman tomorrow!' - - -

While it took me about two sittings to totally absorb 'Like Minds', his portrayal of the mysterious Nigel Colbie, remained hyptonic and consistent throughout the movie. Newsarama reports that further issues of the Fringe comic book series will be delayed until January. The first issue hit stands on September 3, timed to the Fox series' debut, but due to a desire to adhere closely to the television series, DC Comics has decided to push back subsequent issues.
"The writers of the show want to make sure the comic book is integrated into the mythology of the Fringe world, so we have decided to refocus the direction of the comic book," announced Hank Kanalz, VP-General Manager of DC's WildStorm imprint.
"Unfortunately, this means that we will have some delays," he continued, "but [the series] will be back in January."
According to Fringe's co-story consultant Athena Wickham, the TV series' comic book companion "will consist of two parts. Part A will tell the back-story of two of our key characters: Walter Bishop and William Bell. Part B will consist of stand-alone stories.

According to Fringe's co-story consultant Athena Wickham, the TV series' comic book companion "will consist of two parts. Part A will tell the back-story of two of our key characters: Walter Bishop and William Bell. Part B will consist of stand-alone stories.

There are a couple of things you should know about Like Minds (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0425196/), The Good Shepherd (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0343737/) and Savage Grace (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379976/). tMF spotlight review: Savage Grace I've watched Savage Grace (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0379976/) a couple of times already, and still I can't help but be impressed with Redmayne. Aside from Julianne Moore's mesmerizing performance, it was Eddie who really took over the movie and made it his own. If you've read a couple of film reviews that trashed this movie, then rest assured it’s a better movie than what you've heard so far. The problem with those reviews is that they failed to consider the logic behind the ‘slowness’ of the film and that goes with the characters as well - - being unsympathetic or ‘inhumane’ and all that! But before I go any further,...

Even before we put the spotlight on Robert Pattinson, tMF has been covering the acting career of fellow British actor Tom Sturridge (http://themovie-fanatic.com/hotlist/rising_stars/tom_sturridge/). Following a fantastic performance in Like Minds - together with another favorite, Eddie Redmayne - we were disappointed when the producers of Jumper replaced Tom with the more popular but definitely less talented Hayden Christensen. Now, in a bizarre coincidence of sorts, Tom will be appearing in a new movie with Rachel Bilson (who replaced another actress previously cast in Jumper). Here's the good news for all Tom Sturridge fans - this was just posted by The Hollywood Reporter (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/film/news/e3i324d533915afe51bafbd5fc55f77357e): Tom Sturridge is starring in Waiting for Forever, an indie romantic comedy being directed by James Keach. SYDNEY -- Iain Canning, former head of acquisitions for recently shuttered U.K. sales company Renaissance Films, has been tapped to spearhead international acquisitions out of London for Australian sales agent Becker Films International and distribution company Dendy Films, both subsidiaries of the Becker Entertainment Group, the company announced Friday. Becker Films International has acquired five titles in the past 12 months, including Rag Tale, a contemporary urban satire set in the world of the British tabloids, and the Australian title Like Minds, which stars Toni Collette and Richard Roxburgh. BFI president Reiko Bradley said Friday that she hopes to increase the company's lineup to 10 pictures over the next 12 months, encompassing commercial films, genre fare and arthouse titles.
SYDNEY -- In the wake of talks with stakeholders and its board, Film Finance Corporation Australia has placed a moratorium on discussions about whether to cap actors' fees on Australian films pending assessment of the commercial performance of a few key FFC-funded titles during the next 12-18 months. The test cases will be Little Fish, starring Cate Blanchett; Candy, with Heath Ledger; and Like Minds, starring Toni Collette. The federal government's key production funding agency considered placing a ceiling on actors' wages for FFC films after hearing reports from recent Australian productions of fees from AUS$750,000 ($589,155)-$2 million ($1.6 million) for key actors, sometimes taking as much as a sixth of the total budget.
